Understanding the Different Dimension of Media: Text and Visual

Background Information for Learners

The key to appreciate information technologies and communication processes is

reading. If you are not a good reader and do not use your critical thinking skills, then you
cannot enjoy the benefits of the information society. It does not mean just learning the ABC’s
but we must know how to decipher meanings embedded in media texts.

Framing and Reading

Framing means to construct, compose or imagine, meaning to create with a solid plan to
follow using a specific structure in mind. Form and content should be taken into consideration
and always together when we deconstruct and later construct media and media products.

Newspapers and Journalism

News is defined as “the communication of information on current events print, broadcast,

Internet or word of mouth to a third party or mass audience.” Newspapers all have sections
inside, mostly covering the general category of headlines (the most important news of the
day), opinion (columnist writing essays with specializations), entertainment (pop culture
happenings), lifestyle (Health, wellness and related topics), technology, business, sports, and
other special themed sections.
In order to create news, the structure of the 5Ws and 1H is always followed to present
facts. This involves presenting the details by answering the basic questions about the news
item (who, what, where, when, why, and how) presented in an inverted pyramid style.

who

what

where
when

why

how

This means narrating the most interesting facts at the beginning of the news item and
presenting the less interesting details as the story winds down. The most important facts
should be captured by the lead sentence. The lead is responsible for the readers to get
hooked to a story.

Journalism is defined as “the collecting, writing, editing and presenting of news in

newspapers, magazines, radio and television broadcast, or the internet” and concerns the
discipline as well as the business of news creation. A journalist main characteristic in creating
news story is objectivity.

2 types of newspaper

1. Dailies or broadsheets – The main or major newspapers printed in the long paper
format.
2. Tabloid – the smaller, easy to read and thinner format, usually not trusted, specially by
the upper class, since tabloids compete heavily by using sensationalism.

Books, Comics, Magazines and the Publishing Industry

Different kinds of books have their various formats or structures of relaying information to the
readers. Literature covers books that usually involve fictional or true-to-life stories of the
human condition like novels, novelettes, a collection or anthology of short stories, essays,
memories and the like. Trade books are the most expensive books usually printed on glossier
type of paper with hardbound covers.

The comics format is usually designed into panels, where the visual drawings are similar to
how you would see still scenes of movies or TV shows. Dialogues and descriptions are written
on dialogue balloons and panel lines.

Example of COMIC Strip

The magazine is also a format popular among adults and teens alike. Somewhat an
intersection of the newspaper, book and comics, a typical magazine contains printed stories
or essays, illustrations and photographs, and pages of advertising content.

Photography and Timeless Image Concepts

Photography, as originally defined, is the process of recording images through a chemical

interaction caused by light rays hitting a sensitized surfaced, referring to the celluloid film
known as the negative. In the age of digital photography, however, this process of recording
images happens when the image is captured or encoded as electronic signals, stored in the
camera system’s memory storage unit, and later decoded as digital computer image files.
Nowadays we used digital cameras such as the one’s we have on our smartphones to capture
images and this are stored in a memory card.

In Composing the shot, the following questions need to be determined:

• Where is the camera located? Is it near or far from the subject?
• Where is the Camera placed? Is it Higher or Lower than the subject?
• What is the main focus of the shot? What are the secondary elements of the shot?
• Worms View
• Birds View
• Eye Level View
• Framing
• Side View
• Rule of thirds

RULE OF THIRDS

• Lighting and focus are also important to notice when looking at a photograph.
Shadows and highlights could further determine the emotional focus sought by the
photographer while the play on image focus could also help enhance certain emotional
effects as well. This is evident in the use of shallow or deep depth of field as
exemplified in the popular blurring or shallow focus process called BOKEH style.
