“BOUND” CRITICAL ANALYSIS

A historical fiction novel entitled Bound written by Okky Madasari was originally
published by Gramedia pustaka on 2013. The general theme from this bound contains of how
they expect to apply the word “freedom” in their life. It could be seen from the story of a man
named Sasana,he is trapped in his own body, even since he was still in the womb. Nothing
unusual except he heard piano. Later when Sasana was born, both parents Sasana forced him to
play the piano. Sasana plays piano for his parents, not for himself. Out of the body is an answer,
it is even more terrible turmoil, when Sasana     enjoys Dangdut Music accidentally. Sasana feels
this is what he was looking for, freedom and sway along with the music dangdut.
The main character in this novel is is Sasana or Sasa. Sasana is a man who comes from a
wealthy family. Sasana is best described as a male who hates being a male. It is all because of his
traumatic childhood, and because of he is obsessed with his sister and her belongings. Sasana
never disappoints his parents, shown when he is required to play the piano that is not in
accordance with his desire, but he still plays the piano. Beside the main character Sasana, it is a
slightly minor character in this novel, Cak Jaka. Cak Jaka is the one who dares Sasana to step
forward. As a matter of fact, he is the one who triggers the emerging identity of Sasa, as the
alter-ego of Sasana. They met at a coffee stall of Can Man. The background of this story in the
late of 90s era when there were riots everywhere. Point of view in this novel. In this novel Okky
Madasari uses first point of view or narrator as participant. Sasana as the main character always
takes place in every action in the story. The point of view used in this novel is first person point
of view but in two different perspectives, Sasana and Jaka Wani. The story, then, revolves
between these two characters
In this story there are many problems that are packed, ranging from family problems, to
mental, economic, moral, political, etc. The problem was conveyed well. One of the problems we
can see when Sasana goes crazy after being harassed and sexually abused. He explained that the
Sasana was able to talk about various difficult topics, such as talking about his freedom, how he
saw life, how he responded to death, how he felt affection for Nurse Masita, and so far, when he
was still alive. crazy and stay in a mental hospital. Describing the way crazy people think like
normal people have too much risk. We never know how they think, thus, it will make readers
doubt - is it true that crazy people can think rationally as the writer said.
What is confusing sometimes is a story writing that is made It is when Sasana got insane
after getting abused and got harassed sexually. It is described that Sasana is able to speak in kind
of difficult topics, such as talking about his freedom, how he sees life, how he respond to death,
how he felt affection to Masita the nurse, so on and so far, all while he is insane and live in the
mental asylum. Describing the way an insane person think like the normal one has too many
risks. We never know how they think, thus, it would leave the reader doubt is it true that an
insane person is able to think rationally the way the author said. But, after the readers arrived to
the last chapter and finished the reading, this novel will feel very satisfying.
The book and film entitled “BOUND” are clearly one of the breakthroughs of literary
works that tell the story of someone who wants to feel the freedom that has been successfully
packaged into a different story from other literary works. The author presents several messages
taken from the human struggle for their freedom. We can see from the story when Cak Man's
children were killed by factory people because he asked for a raise, or when Sasana was young
and intimidated by a group of students who have power so that children will not get any
punishment for their actions. When he joined a religious movement and suddenly had power and
money. It is illustrated that people with money are free from arbitrary consequences. Overall I
have satisfied with this book. That's just the end of a less interesting story.
