How Churchill’s addresses kept Great Britain’s morale afloat in WWII?

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill was a British statesman who served as Prime

Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945, during the Second World War, and again

from 1951 to 1955.

Churchill's power to inspire, his strategic foresight, his driving passion, and his

unstoppable personality were the core qualities that made him an effective leader and

statesman, the realization that he too was a “worm” tempered his character and kept him focused.

Churchill had criticized appeasement during the late 1930s and was determined to stop Hitler.

There was no talk of surrender. He delivered strong speeches and visited areas that had been

bombed by the Germans in the hope of raising morale. People could listen to his speeches on the

radio. Churchill used emotive language, metaphor and powerful imagery, delivering his

speeches with such authority that they strengthened the nation's resolve during the darkest of

days. He understood how to use words to let the listener's imagination take over, transporting

them to the scene of the battle.

Churchill did it by embedding pathos and ethos in his points. At the same time, he

informed, encouraged, and moved the people to come out of hiding and fight. Through the use of

metaphors and analogies, he managed to add strong emotion to every vital part of the speech.

In “Blood, Toil, Tears, and Sweat”, Winston Churchill uses pathos to cause the audience to

feel emotions such as fear. ... The people of Britain knew the war was important but Churchill

wanted them to know that there is too much to lose if they give up on the war.

In the event, the battle was won by the Royal Air Force (RAF) Fighter Command,

whose victory not only blocked the possibility of invasion but also created the conditions for

Great Britain's survival, for the extension of the war, and for the eventual defeat of Nazi

Germany.
