The patient presented with worst abdominal pain and shoulder pain. On examination, she had left adnexal tenderness, closed cervix, and scant blood in the vaginal vault. The nursing diagnosis was related to a possible ectopic pregnancy. Short term goals were to reduce the patient's abdominal and shoulder pain within 4 hours. Long term goals were to decrease her pain in both areas after 8 hours of nursing intervention through establishing trust and monitoring her vital signs and renal function. The nursing intervention and rationale focused on independent assessment, rapport building, and pain monitoring. The outcome was met as evidenced by her decreased abdominal and shoulder pain.
