Abstract—A proper attendance system is essential
for all academic institutions to ensure quality education
for every student. Digital Attendance system keeps the
record of every registered student and eradicates the
traditional tedious task significantly. Moreover, this
system keeps the data of every student registered in the
attendance log. It provides necessary information
according to the need whenever it arises in future. This
paper presents a model of a digital attendance system to
reduce the manual effort of recording data. Being a
digital system, it also saves paper in the process.

I. INTRODUCTION
Undoubtedly, regular attendance in class is the most inThe
attendance and absence management of the traditional way
have used the method of directly entering the students'
attendance status for each classroom in handwriting with the
inconvenience of creating a separate attendance book for each
corresponding class. In the case of initial electronic attendance
and absence system introduced to implement such
inconvenience, the teacher had to enter the handwritten details
for each classroom into the attendance and absence
management system to view the attendance or absence status or
to print the attendance book, but it was a hassle that required a
double work. The system is inexpensive to build and more
efficient than a manual method of physically marking
attendance. The proposed system in this paper enables fast
attendance checking, provides various methods to acknowledge
attendance in anyitial condition for the students to ensure an
excellent academic result. Lack of a proper and efficient
monitoring system cause the students to refrain from attending
the class regularly, which brings a dismal performance in the
exam. Consequently, valuable time and energy of the students
is wasted; sometimes, they are dropped out and the reputation
of the academic institute sharply declines. Apart from this,
engaging the teacher to take attendance halts the continuity of
the class, which hampers the class's quality. On the other hand,
a minimum of 75 per cent attendance for each course is
mandatory to avoid being barred from the exam. In a system
like this where a student can also know the information
regarding his attendance beforehand so that he can be cautious
of it. The traditional attendance system drastically fails to solve
these problems.

II. RELATED WORKS
In this section , we will view the current system of attendance
and our approach to make it better
A. Existing system of attendance
The attendance and absence management of the traditional way

corresponding class. In the case of initial electronic attendance
and absence system introduced to implement such
inconvenience, the teacher had to enter the handwritten details
for each classroom into the attendance and absence management
system to view the attendance or absence status or to print the
attendance book, but it was a hassle that required a double work.
The system is inexpensive to build and more efficient than a
manual method of physically marking attendance. The proposed
system in this paper enables fast attendance checking, provides
various methods to acknowledge attendance in any situation and
provides convenience such as attendance book management.
Also, the study suggested and implemented a digital attendance
system using microcontroller that has the advantage of being
low-cost.
III. PURPOSE OF THE SYSTEM
The Digital Attendance System is concerned with the design of
automatic units, which is highly helpful for taking attendance in
school colleges. There are control units for marking absent and
present. The data is stored in the device and can be later on
logged into the PC using the USB interface. 
It takes the attendance of students, which is entered
manually. Later on, it can be connected to a computer system to
be stored. It is effortless to operate and takes no time.
In this system, we take the attendance from various students
in ascending order, and the data is stored corresponding to each
roll no. It can be either present, absent, or none. The data is
stored in the EEPROM of the microcontroller, and it is
transmitted serially via the USB to the microcontroller. The data
storing software is developed using Visual Basic. It uses the
Comm. Control of the VB.

The system in the study is a design of a digital attendance
system. Figure 1 is the overall system flowchart of the digital
attendance system suggested in this study.

5. 6 switch – Used to enter the input to the microcontroller

1. Transformer- A step-down transformer converts the

incoming 12 V AC to 5 V AC Fig.6 Push button switch

6. 8051 microcontroller – A microcontroller having a

processing unit , input /output pins and memory on a single chip.

7. LCD display – Displays the Output of the code uploaded in

the memory of the microcontroller.

2. Rectifier – Converts the 5 V AC to pulsating DC

8. USB -to - UART module – Used to transfer attendance

data from the EEPROM of the microcontroller to DBMS system on
the computer.

3. 1000 µF capacitor - store the energy up to the very high

input level of the voltage, and releases the input voltage down, to
maintain the output voltage at the same level.

9. Computer Stores the attendance data , and produce it if and

when required in future.

VII. CONCLUSION
The study designed and implemented a convenient and practical
attendance management system. The system was designed and
implemented so that using a digital attendance check is possible
without additional actions or spending time for attendance.
The biggest characteristics of this system are that for
attendance of the student the attendance is acknowledged as
soon as the student enters the lecture hall of their course which
means the professor does not have to spend time to check the
attendance of the students, and it is convenient and practical
because the student also does not have to do any additional
actions for attendance.
