Speaker 1: Lance
Hi, I’m Lance. I love being outside. I take my bicycle for a ride three times a week. I usually like
to ride my bike early in the morning. There are fewer people on the bike path at that time. The ride
also helps to wake me up. Every two months, my friends and I go on a picnic together. I sometimes
just want to relax, so I read in the park near my house.
Speaker 2: Danielle
My name’s Danielle, and I’m a big fan of the arts. A day at an art museum would be perfect
for me. I like to look at a painting for a long time and try to understand its meaning. I also enjoy
attending concerts. I like jazz concerts most of all. When I’m in the mood to stay home, I practice
playing the guitar. It’s difficult to learn, but I love it.
More to Teach:
Go to is more general than attend and visit. Attend is usually formal. It is used when someone
participates in or watches an event. We use visit when we go to see a place or person. See more
examples below:

I enjoy going to the movies in my free time. I like most kinds of movies, but I’m not a
fan of horror movies. Every time I see them, I feel scared. I enjoy reading too, especially
English books. Reading is a great way to practice English. Hip-hop music is not my cup of
tea. It’s too noisy for me. I usually don’t enjoy watching TV either. The only interesting TV
programs are Japanese cooking shows. Japanese food is my favorite type of food.
Speaker 2: Iris
Most people think I’m shy, but I’m not. I love meeting people. I also enjoy joining
clubs. My hobbies are taking pictures and writing stories. I love reading too. I’m a big J.K.

I’m crazy about classical music. I always listen to it when I eat French food. How about
you? Do you like Mozart and Beethoven?
Speaker 3: Terry
“You talk too much. You talk on the phone all the time.” My friends always say that
about me, but that’s not true. Other people do this more. My favorite activity is watching
TV. And I don’t talk when I’m watching something. In my opinion, sports shows are the
best. Reading is not my thing. I just don’t have time. I don’t have time to cook either. I
prefer instant noodles because they’re quick and easy.

B. The Difference
There is a difference in emphasis between infinitives and gerunds:
1. The infinitive form is often used to describe general ideas and goals.
2. The gerund form is mostly used to talk about reality and everyday life.
This is why there is a separation between the verbs that take each one.
For Example:
Usage Note
Two uses often mean the same thing. The only difference is what the sentence emphasizes.
Compare the sentences below:
• The doctor’s job is to save lives. (the general idea of the job)
• The doctor’s job is saving lives. (he does it every day)
