Teaching Resources
More to Teach:

A. Infinitive as the Subject

Using an infinitive as the subject of a sentence sounds very formal. It is mostly used in:
1. formal speeches
2. poetic literature
For Example:
• To live is to learn.

B. The Difference
There is a difference in emphasis between infinitives and gerunds:
1. The infinitive form is often used to describe general ideas and goals.
2. The gerund form is mostly used to talk about reality and everyday life.
This is why there is a separation between the verbs that take each one.
For Example:

• I promise to be there early.

Goal / General Idea • Matt plans to start a company next year.
• Most people refuse to learn about computers.

• I like being a student.

Everyday Life • Playing basketball is Larry’s favorite pastime.
• Melissa loves learning new things.

Usage Note

Two uses often mean the same thing. The only difference is what the sentence emphasizes.
Compare the sentences below:
• The doctor’s job is to save lives. (the general idea of the job)
• The doctor’s job is saving lives. (he does it every day)
