Sudharsanaa T is a young designer. She did her degree in Fashion and apparel design They are a family of 4 members. Believes in Hindu religion.

from National Institute of Design, Gandhinagar. Sana is a pet lover and owns a dog (Momo) . A space is needed for Momo in the house(not
a kennel but a space dedicated to him). Her parents will be the primary occupants of the

outdoors, listening to music reading and relaxing when home. However all of them likes
spending some alone time too. They are part of a joint family and all the relatives gather
for major occasions. The house should accommodate the relatives in such occasion and
aslo have utensils for preparing foods for such events.

Outdoor Spaces
The client would like to have open courtyards, an outdoor garden/patio with a water
element and a lotus pond. The house should have good ventilation and open spaces to
grab the sunlight and wind inside. They require an outdoor shower.

Major challenge for designing this house would be shape of the site. Since the site is not
rectangular, it might block views if a new building comes in the adjacent plot. Also it might
be difficult to zone activities without interruptions from one end to another. Keeping the
house low maintenance while adding courtyard space, greenery and pond would be
something to resolve. There is no drainage system provided by the builders, so rainwater
has to be harvested and reused.
Opportunities
Four family memebers with four different requirements and purposes in life. Each one
of them have slightly different perspectives to how their space should be. Along with
bringing all these colliding thoughts to unision, this aslo provides a unique opportunity to
explore the architecture suiting different mentalities-a true marriage of the old and new.

Introduction
Sana is a designer and her brother is a disc jockey. Her parents will be the primary
occupants of the house. They are a family of 4, and together they envision a residence
which is a mix of contemporary and traditional style, and accommodates each one of their
needs. They are fond of gardening and wants the house to blend in with nature. Spaces
should feel light and airy. The planning should follow vastu.
There are two access roads on opposite sides of the site. To the east is a park and vacant
plots on the other side. In the vicinity of site, there are very few built structures. There is
continuous breeze from the NE side-from the mountains. The site is dry with low ground
cover and under growth. During rain there is water logging in the site.
Site
The site is located in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The plot is part of a gated community. The site
consists of 4 rectangular plots, each 30x40 ft. The climate here is tropical. The wet season
is oppressive and overcast, the dry season is muggy and partly cloudy, and it is hot year
round. The average annual temperature is 28.8 °C. In a year, the rainfall is 840 mm.

Bringing visually strong character on both sides facing the road, carved out garden/court
spaces, Clear boundary definition between studio and residence, capturing the NE winds,
water body on NE side and blocking harsh western sun were some of the driving factors.
Spaces are zoned as per Vastu . Altogether it resulted in a L shaped layout with services The curved wall on north side carves out a huge open space separated from the residence,
along the NW side . cutting direct views from the road and defining a clear boundary between residence and
studio. A water body, parking and garden is created in this space with a path that leads to
the house. The wall also creates an element of curiosity for a person from outside and lets
them experience the spaces over time.
The entire site is a play of curves and blocks .Straight lines represent the functional aspects,
merged with curved lines that meets the artistic/sculptural aspirations of the family. The Studio, living, master bedroom and common toilet are arranged along an axis creating
residence is made of straight lines in contract with the curved walls that extend from the a rectangular block with sloped roof. The kitchen , utility and dining forms another block
boundary and define the garden spaces. with flat roof that creates an open terrace above .

There are no views on the NW side, so open spaces are zoned towards the park side out. Finally resulting in an L shaped layout .
capturing the NE winds and building is aligned towards NW side . Water body on west
side creates a courtyard that acts as a buffer space. A sculptural wall that cuts along the
site acts as a screen separating the private and public zones.

hindrance on site. The functional aspects are resolved in straight lines and curved lines
express the artistic side, forming the courtyard space. Making the south side elevation
interesting, to create a curiosity in the observer passing by the site.
The curved wall on front side blocks the harsh southern sun, provides privacy inside house,
at the same time makes the elevation interesting. Spaces are Zoned around the circle
platform making it a core space. A narrow water channel runs along the axis to the well,
acting as rainwater drainage.
The waste materials from the old house is used in different spaces. The retaining wall

Sound proof material on façade or a corridor on street side can help reduce the noise from
