ABSTRACT

Exercise 37 shows the simulation of the DC motor through MATLAB Simulink. 6 physical
parameters were given to execute in the MATLAB. There were a total of 12 blocks in the schematic
diagram and converted it to a single block diagram.

A Simulink model is used to obtain an equivalent block diagram. Mathematical and other
components are used to create the block diagram that obtains an answer. A scope is used to
visualize the output of the block diagram. In Exercise 2, a block diagram is created for an
automotive suspension.

OBJECTIVES

1. To be able to convert a hardware component design to its equivalent block diagram.


2. To be able to use MATLAB: Simulink to obtain the equivalent block diagram.

THEORIES AND PRINCIPLE

A block diagram with corresponding mathematical operations in Simulink MATLAB can


be used to create appropriate models. An integrator block with the symbol ‘1/s’ is used as an
equivalent block for the interaction operation. Likewise, a derivative block is also used to obtain a
derivative of the input at the output. The add blocks sum up the model before being inserted into
the inputs of another function/block. A block diagram is the hardware equivalent of components
within a system to visualize the mathematical process of the system better. Simulink enables the
easy set-up of a block diagram with computations that are automatically done upon run.

EXERCISE 1: MATLAB SIMULINK - DC MOTOR
DISCUSSION
The direct current motor (DC motor) is a typical actuator in control systems. It may
generate rotational motion on its own, or it can be used in conjunction with wheels, drums, and
cables to provide translational motion.
In the simulation there are 6 physical parameters which are moment of inertia of the rotor
(J), motor viscous friction constant (b), electromotive force constant (Ke), motor torque constant
(Kt), electric resistance (R) and electric inductance (L). There were 12 components in total for the
MATLAB Simulink. Six (6) of the components were gain blocks which are the 6 physical
parameters. Two (2) are add blocks and two (2) are In1 and Out1 blocks. The last step will be the
creation of subsystem in which all of the blocks will be reduced and place into 1 block namely the
DC motor.
SAMPLE PROBLEMS
The schematic diagram of the activity was shown in the lab manual. Create a schematic
Diagram of the DC Motor wherein there will be no intersecting lines or connection of the blocks.

EXERCISE 2: MATLAB SIMULINK - SUSPENSION
DISCUSSION

Suspension systems are vital parts of any mechanical system. In automotives, suspensions
provide damping of the vehicle from vibrations brought upon by the tire contact on the rough
surface upon which the vehicle is moving on. In this MATLAB simulation using Simulink, the
characteristic of a working suspension system is investigated. In this Simulink model 7 parameters
are considered: these are (m1) body mass, (m2) suspension mass, (k1) spring constant of
suspension system, (k2) spring constant of wheel and tire, (b1) damping constant of suspension
system, (b2) damping constant of wheel and tire, and lastly (u) control force. With their respective
variables.

In generating the models in Simulink, and simulating it, we generated a plot in which a damping
trend can be observed. The model consists of 2 Steps, U and W, then we used gains as the spring,
masses, dampers, additionally a total of 6 adding components, 1 derivative component, and 4
integrator components, lastly, a scope is used to acquire the readings provided by the schematic,
wherein, the scope shows a damped vibration plot.

SAMPLE PROBLEMS

Create a MATLAB simulation using simulink that gives back data about the natural frequency of
a sample. In this simulation a model of a simple suspension bridge is considered. In generating the
model consider the mass of the bridge platform, mass of the suspension lines, spring constant of
the suspension lines, damping of the road. Assume no vehicles pass through the bridge. The mass
of the bridge is 40,000 kg, mass of the suspension lines are 2000 kg each (total of 4), spring
constant of the suspension lines are 200,000 N/m, damping of the road is 500 N.s/m.

CONCLUSION
The objectives of the activity were completed through MATLAB Simulink. First is to
convert the hardware components into a block diagram in which there were a total of 12 blocks in
the schematic diagram. Second is to use MATLAB simulink to simulate the block diagram. The
physical parameters were given and executed correctly to the simulink. The equivalent block
diagram of DC Motor was successfully completed in the first activity.

After completing the schematic, then simulating the model. The plot generated through
the scope block of the schematic shows a damping effect. This damping effect can be conclusively
observed through a graph with displacement being on the y-axis against time on the x-axis, here,
as the time increases the magnitude of the oscillation of the displacement decreases. Therefore,
conclusively, this is a representation of damping.

RECOMMENDATION
In this report, it is recommended to always reduce the block diagram. Put a scope to see
the result of the simulation. It is also recommended to place the block in which there will be no
intersecting lines or connection of each component.
