Step 1: Supplies Needed for Chunky Hand-Knit Blanket

Easy Chunky Hand-Knitted Blanket in One Hour: Page 2

For this blanket, I wanted to use yarn that is very soft and thick. I purchased 3 skeins of this yarn from my local Walmart
for $5.88 each. They sell it in a variety of nice colors. I recommend buying one extra skein, just in case it is needed, as
amounts vary based on stitch size. Or, you can buy several more if you want a larger blanket. These 3 skeins of yarn made
me a throw that ended up being 30 inches wide by 50 inches long. It does stretch a bit though and when I re-measured
it, it was closer to 60 inches long.

3-4 skeins of Chenille Chunky Yarn 8 oz. (I used Mainstays brand from Walmart) - but the Lion Brand

measuring tape
scissors
a needle and thread (totally optional, used to reinforce areas where you are tying on new pieces of yarn)

Need a Larger Blanket?

Here is a calculation you can use to determine approximately how many skeins you may need (for a medium-tight knit
blanket). You can replace the 50 x 60 with whatever measurements you have:

A blanket 50x60: 50x60=3000 divide by 350 = 8.57 - 9 skeins.

I made my knots quite tight. I used 6 packs of chenille yarn from Micheals! But I looooove the way
it turned out!!

So creative! That is so beautiful! :))) I like to see the tight knots. It is differnet in a really great way!

Holly, thank you for the easy to follow tutorial! my first blanket was a baby blanket for my sister in
law, she absolutely adored it :) i cant wait to make more and post pictures!
Great instructions! Thank you so much. I have never hand-knitted before and I was able to make
a Christmas tree skirt just by following your instructions and adding an extra third loop, by twisting
the ladder stitch and then looping into it, every third row. I used four skeins of white and a bit over
two skeins of grey.

The sides of my blanket roll or curl .

Stacy, sorry for not replying, Your blanket looks so cute! I am sorry I have never had that happen
with the sides curling. You did skip the first loop in each row, right? The only thing I can think of is
that it might be because your loops are a lot tighter. :)

Absolutely loved this!

Great instructions!! I made two of these already. One is a bit looser and one has a tighter knit.
Your instructions were very easy to follow. Thank you!!

Beautiful!!! Thanks so much for sharing!

Did it and love it!

How well does this wash? I think the chunky Merino wool blankets are practically unwashable (at
least in a washing machine), and they never really look as good after being washed.
Great queation! I will try to test this out with the cat bed I made (basically a smaller version of this
one) and I will take some before and after images and let you know how it looks, washes, etc. :)
Great, thanks! I have high hopes for this yarn over Merino wool.

Mariette, I am so sorry for such a late reply. I did wash it and after taking it out of the washing
machine, it felt nearly dry already (very slightly damp). So, I laid it out flat and every few hours,
would flip it over. Anyway, this particular mini blanket (cat blanket I made) wasn't done super tight.
It looked very slightly off, or different, after washing it. I noticed it wasn't drastic though, as my
other large blanket that was loosely hand knitted, looks kinda similar. Also, nothing else major
happened - no tied off ends came loose. So, I basically used my hands to check if any areas
were tighter or looser than normal, and tried to kind of readjust things a bit while still damp. Hope
that makes sense. It wasn't ruined or anything. I am so sorry I don't have the after image. I was in
a huge hurry and I gave it to a relative as a gift for her kitty. I wouldn't have given it to her if it
looked super weird though. So I hope that helps a little. I really hope if and when you wash yours,
that it stays put and looks good still. I have a feeling, especially if it's a larger blanket, that once it
settles down and is used more after being washed, it may look better and better. It's hard to
explain, but where it looked a bit off, was where some areas were just a bit tighter than others. I
was able to fix it though.
Thanks so much for the followup, Holly! Yeah, it seems like kind of "wet blocking" it on a flat
surface should hopefully take care of things. This certainly sounds better than Merino wool
literally "felting" after being washed.
I know this is a really late reply but I've washed them a bunch and mostly they look just fine if I
hang them to dry. ;)
Great to hear. Thanks! :)

Can I ask where people buy there super chunky wool, because the cheapest I can find is eBay
but still it's £10 per roll and I need 4 to make the blanket.

Great tutorial!

Thanks Julia! Sorry for not replying sooner. Your blanket looks awesome!

We ended up using 6 skeins of Mainstays yarn. Both niece and dogs liked it.

Thanks for sharing this Hillary and the images are so cute. I really like that deep color. Looks so
nice!
The instructions were easy to follow. Blanket was fun and easy to make Made it for a gift for a
friend. Thanks for the tutorial! Cannot wait to make another one.

Angela, thanks for uploading the images. So gorgeous and cozy. Love your pictures and you did
an awesome job!
I made it. It does shed

Stacy, that is so beautiful. Love the colors. Wow it looks good.

One of the best instructional tutorials! Not bad for my first try.

Thank you! It looks amazing!

This was the most helpful instructions for someone like myself who is the least crafty person.
First attempt at ever doing any type of stitching and not too bad for first attempt!

Vdipaolo, you did such a great job! I am so happy the instructions were understandable! And,
thank you so much for your pics you uploaded! So happy your blanket turned out so beautiful!
You're so HOT! I love how serious you are teaching us how to hand knit! Seriously super sexy!

Your comment, Beverly! Thank you! :)

Mine turned out great thank you! I decided to tie it off before adding the last skein. Instead I
added it to the other side to make it wider. It's lovely. I bet my sister will love it! :)

do you have any chart with different sizes and the amount of yarn they take?

Becozi.net has that information on their website.

First time!

My 11 year old was able to make this with a little help from Mom. He enjoyed making it.

Hey, thank you for posting this! I literally woke up this morning wishing I had a comfy small
blanket I could throw around my shoulders for morning meditation, but I didn’t want to knit
something that would take forever (I’m a very beginner knitter), and this Instructable showed up
in my inbox. Very excited to make this happen.
You are welcome! I hope you can get the yarn and make a beautiful blanket. At Walmart, the
stores also sell a white or ivory chenille yarn and it is so beautiful..even nicer than this color. I
hope you make one. The yarn and the blanket are so incredibly soft and cozy. Morning
meditation sounds so nice. :) Thanks for the comment.
I really need to make this for my bedroom!

Please do! I love these blankets. They are so soft.

Thank you! I went out to Walmart and found this same yarn and made a blanket using your
instructions which are far and away the best on the internet, thank you! The blanket is surprisingly
warm and cozy!
ValJam, thank you so much for the comment!!! I love hearing that you made a blanket! This yarn
really is so soft and nice. I am so glad the instructable was useful! Thank you!
That looks amazing. I'll bet the cats love theirs!

Lee, thank you!!! So great to see your comment! It's been ages!

Life intervenes with our plans :-)

Work has kept me busy. Sometime I hope do more instructables. good to see you back!

Great instructions very great fun for the videos, I would like to know how you tied your knot at the
very very end. I think I made my loops too big because mine is “spacing out”. But I think I will
take it apart and redo it! Love the idea, will be making more for friends.

PS - your cat is SO cute!!!
