READING PROJECT SMART (START MAKING A READER TODAY)

Programs, Projects and Online Read to Succeed

Activities ( PPAs) Conducted Through the collaboration of the teachers and the parents, pupils are guided in their reading activities. Reading
worksheets are distributed to the parents which focuses on the following:

Phonemic Awareness-Phonemic awareness is the ability to identify and manipulate individual sounds
(phonemes) in spoken words. Activities given were:
-implementing a sound wall through an online reading class where learners become familiar with individual letter
sounds. (consonants and vowels)
-worksheets of these sound are given to parents so they can display it on their wall and the children can practice
the sound of each letter until they become familiar with the sounds.

Word Recognition- is a part of a self-promoting cycle: the bigger the sight word vocabulary, the more words one
is likely to read; the more words one reads, the bigger their sight word vocabulary. It is often the only way to learn
and read irregular words. It is highly correlated to reading comprehension, and is essential to independent
reading. Activities given were:
-the learners get to read basic sight words through worksheets given to parents
-through an online reading class, the pupils are guided in reading the words which are repeatedly read twice a
week.
Read Aloud- pupils get to read short passages/stories with comprehension questions
-done during the online reading class
-reading materials are given to parents and allow their children to read via video presentation
Developing a child's reading skills is important to his/her success in school. This will allow the children to
access the breadth of the curriculum and improve their communication and language skills. In addition to this,
reading is a requisite to all other learning areas so it is very important that every child becomes a proficient
reader. In an effort to improve the reading literacy of the country, the Department of Education provides different

reading programs that could help our learners become proficient readers. One of this is the ‘Bawat Bata

analysis, data-driven) In line to this, the proposed reading project entitled “Project Smart” (Start Making A Reader Today) is
designed to help the non-readers, slow readers, and fast readers who are identified through the Phil-IRI Pre-Test
Assessment conducted by the teachers in grade four. It provides support and reinforcement in reading among our
learners to improve and enhance their reading skills. Project SMART focuses in providing pupils with additional
support in remedial and enhanced reading. It works on:
• phonemic awareness
• phonics
• fluency
• comprehension
• vocabulary
The Objectives of the 1. Improve the reading skills of learners.
