Module 1: Introduction to GE ELECT 1:

Environmental Science

Learning Activity:

Instruction: Explain the relevance of this subject to you as an individual, and

as a civil engineering student.
Environmental Science is the field of science that studies the
interactions of the physical, chemical, and biological components of the
environment and also the relationships and effects of these components with
the organisms in the environment.
As an individual and as a civil engineering student, we should study
Environmental Science so that we'll discover that environmental issues (both
new as well as old, past and present) are not only local but also global. Many
people still don’t have any idea what "global warming" means. Environmental
science will keep us up to date on issues such as global warming, climate
change, ozone depletion, acid rains, and the damaging impact of
microplastics on marine life and biodiversity, all of which are not only
national/local issues but also worldwide issues. To tackle these issues head-
on, professionals and each of us will need to work together, and also we can
familiarize ourselves with available solutions to different environmental
problems caused by poor hygiene, energy waste, etc., and apply them in
ways that will create and preserve a healthier environment for future
generations.

Self-Check

Instruction: Answer the following questions accurately and concisely. (20 pts.)
1. Choose your favourite environmental principle. Explain why.
Ours is a finite earth. (Ang kalikasan ay may hangganan.)
Every day, God has blessed us with many great things and
blessings, but our home, Earth, is one of the most appreciative presents He
has given us. Since the earliest humans laid their foot on the ground, it has
been our home. It makes us live each and every day. It provides us with all we
require. It provides our day a pop of color. However, many disasters have
struck other countries in recent years. We need to adjust our routines. We
should be aware of what is going on around us. We should be able to assist
each other in some way. Our waste should not be thrown all over the place.
We must be sensitive and aware about the limit of these resources.

Reflection Time!
Reflect on the learning that you gained from this lesson by completing the
given chart. You may post your reflection on our Google classroom. For low-
level technology students, please submit your answers in a whole page of
short size bond paper.(20 pts.)

What were your misconceptions about the topic prior to taking up this
lesson?
I thought that the climate is always changing or it has changed many
times in the past before humans began burning coal and oil. So there is no
reason to believe humans are causing warming today. This misconception
falsely presumes that if the climate changes naturally, then humans have no
role to play or that it is impossible distinguish manmade climate change from
natural change. In reality, several climate drivers have both natural and
human sources and scientists can tell them apart. The evidence strongly
supports manmade CO2 as the primary cause of recent warming.

What new or additional learning have you gained from this lesson in
terms of skills, content and attitude?
Environment plays an important role in healthy living and the existence
of life on planet earth. Earth is a home for different living species and we all
are dependent on the environment for food, air, water, and other needs.
Therefore, it is important for every individual to save and protect our
environment.
