3. Given that the influent to UASB reactor has the following characteristics: BOD = 350
mg/l, COD = 820 mg/l, TSS = 395 mg/l, VSS = 270 mg/l, flow rate = 1000 m 3/d, depth
of sludge blanket = 2.2 m, Reactor height = 5 m, effective coefficient = 0.85. Average
concentration of sludge in the reactor is 70 kg/m 3 and sludge wasted per day is
315 kg/m3. Determine HRT for sludge age of 30 days, assuming 80% BOD removal
efficiency.

b.i) Estimate mass and volume of sludge produced in a Primary Sedimentation tank
from precipitation of Phosphorus with lime. Assume 60% of the TSS is removed
without the addition of lime and that the addition of 400 mg/lit of Ca (OH) 2 results
in an increased removal of TSS of 85%. Assume the following data : Wastewater
flow rate is 1000 (m3/d) , Wastewater TSS is 220 (mg/lit), Wastewater volatile
TSS is 150 (mg/lit), Wastewater PO43- is 10 (mg/lit), Wastewater total hardness

10 (mg/lit), Effluent PO43- is 0.5(mg/lit), Effluent Ca2+ is 60(mg/lit), Effluent Mg2+ is
0(mg/lit), Chemical sludge Properties: specific gravity is 1.07, Moisture content is

b) Design an aerobic digester to treat the waste sludge produced by the activated
sludge treatment plant. Assume the following conditions apply:
(i) The amount of waste sludge to be digested is 2057 kg TSS/day.
(ii) The minimum and maximum liquid temperatures are 15°C for winter
operation and 25°C for summer operation.
(iii) The system must achieve 40% volatile solids reduction in the winter.
(iv) The minimum Solids Retention Time for both summer and winter conditions
is 60 days. From the plot the volatile solid reduction in winter is 45% and
summer is 50%.
(v) Waste sludge is concentrated to 3% by using gravity belt thickener.
(vi) The specific gravity of the waste sludge is 1.03.
(vii) Sludge concentration in the digester is 70% of the incoming thickened
sludge concentration.
(viii) The reaction rate coefficient kd is 0.06 day-1 at 15°C.
(ix) Volatile fraction of digester Total suspended solid is 0.80.
(x) No primary solids are included in the influent to the digester.
(xi) Influent and digester suspended solid is 30000 g/m3.
(xii) Oxygen requirement for both summer and winter is 2.3 kg O 2 / kg of VSS
destroyed.
