Answer All Problems: -

Q1. (a) What is the main difference between the aerobic and anaerobic wastewater
treatment?

(b) Define biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and why the rate constant may vary.

(c) If the BOD of municipal wastewater at the end of seven days is 60 mg/L and the
ultimate BOD is 85.0 mg/L. What is the rate constant?

Q2. (a) Explain the difference between pretreatment, primary treatment, secondary
treatment, and show how they are related.

(b) A wastewater flow of 5000 m3/d is treated in a facultative pond that is 2.0 m deep
with surface area of 20 hectares. The wastewater has soluble BOD5 of 150-mg/L and
reaction rate coefficient of 0.30 d-1. Determine the soluble BOD of the effluent.

(C) Give the main advantages for using pond system in wastewater treatment?

Q3. (a) What are the main difference between suspended growth system and attached
growth system in biological treatment. Give examples for both systems.

(b) A secondary clarifier is to be designed to remove the biomass from completely

mixed activated sludge reactor. Average flow conditions (influent plus recycle) is 11200
m3 /d. The minimum is one –half this amount, and the peak flow is 2.1 times the average.
Design secondary clarifier to meet these conditions.

Q4. (a) What sludge digestion? What are the two basic types of sludge digestion units?

(b) A wastewater treatment plant consists of primary treatment followed by completely

mixed activated sludge secondary system. The primary and secondary sludges are mixed,
thickened, and treated by anaerobic digestion. The system is shown schematically in the
accompanying figure. The wastewater, treatment plant, and sludge characteristics of
interest are given below.

Wastewater Treatment plant Sludges

Influent SS = 240 mg/L Dia. of primary clarifier Primary sludge = 3.8%
= 25 m solids
Influent BOD= 210 mg/L Aeration basin volume = Waste secondary sludge =
3600 m3 0.95% solids
Effluent BOD= 10 mg/L MLSS in aeration = 2800 Thickened sludge = 2.6%
mg/L solids
Flow = 14350 m3/d

Determine ( a) the solids loading rate to the digesters (kg/d and m3 /d) .
(b) the percent volume reduction in the thickener, and
(c) the volume of supernatant returned from the thickener to the primary
clarifier.

primary clarifier for a flow of 30000 m3 /d ?

(b ) Discuss the function of aeration tanks in the activated sludge process of sewage
treatment.
