Answer all Questions: -

Q1.

( b) Mention the water analysis that done for water samples to

indicate the type and age of contamination?
(c ) Define Turbidity of water and its sources ,impact and how can
be measured?
( d ) A small town with population of 80000 persons. The watre
company records indicate that the peak rate of water consumption is
220 L/c.d. The water sources is surface water contains 2800 mg/l of
total solids (TS) . The standards for drinking water not more than
500 mg/l .This watre is treated in treatment plant equiped with
circular sedimentation tanks with surface over flow rate of 20
m3/m2.d . and efficiency removal of 85%. Determine the following:-
i- The actual concentration of TS in the effluent.
ii- The number and dimensions of required tanks.

.Q2
What are the main parameters that must be available in a plain )a(
? sedimentation tank
Define Detention Time for sedimementation tank. How often is )b(
?taken in water process
( c) A water treatment plant is to process 24,000 cubic meters per day.
Design a necessary circular sedimentation tanks required if surface
over flow rate (SOR) is assumed as 16 m2/m3/d. and depth of the tank
is 3m.
(d) Draw schematic diagram for surface water treatment, with
indicate to chemical names that must be used to render it to potable
water.

Q3.
(a) What is the porpuse of coagulation -flocculation processes in water
treatment ? Draw schematic diagram for this type of treatment.
(b ) Determine the daily requirement of alum, lime and polyelectrolyte to
coagulate a flow of 200 L/s , if the jar test indicates that optimum
coagulation occurs when 1 liter of water is dosed with 3 mL of 10 g/L
alum solution , 1.8 mL of 5 g/L of lime and 0.20 mg/L of
polyelectrolyte.

(c) Determine the tank dimensions ( length, width, depth) of a uniform

depth axial flow flocculation basin to treat 36400 m3/d.The detention
time is 50 minutes.Assume the basin width is 25 m consisting of five
equal width units seperated by perforated concrete walls.( the cross-
section of each unit is square).

Q4.
Water treatment plant used coagulation- flocculation units to ) a (
enhance settling processes ,the sedimentation tank has the following
:characteristics

Liqued Temperature, °C 20
Drag Coefficient, CD 1.7
Paddle velocity, m/s 0.60
Velocity gradient, s-1 60
Flocculation basin volume,m3 3000

at 20 C, µ= 1.009 × 10-3 and ρ= 998.2 kg/m3
P = CD AP ρvp 3/2

( b ) A surface water with 120 mg/L of suspended solids treated in

rapid sand filter with filtring velocity of 0.10 cm/s . If the water
quantity requirement is 25 m3/minute .Determine;
I- numbers of sand filters required.

( c ) A coagulation treatment plant with a flow of 43,200 m3/d is dosing

alum at 20 mg/L. No other chemicals are being added. The raw
water suspended –solids ( SS ) concentration is 40 mg/L. The
effluent suspended - solids concentration is measured at 06 mg/L.
The sludge solids content is 0.85 percent and the specific gravity
of the sludge solids is 3.01 . What volume of sludge must be
disposed of each day?
