CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Students in certain programmes must complete the industry training to graduate from their
higher levels of education. Industrial training also provided exposure and experience to students
about real situation at workplace. It is also for an early preparation for student before entering the
actual working life. There are a lot of benefits that i get during industrial training that has not been
experienced in universities.

During my industrial training, i was in charge under the project at Animal Research &
Service Centre (ARASC) under KEP. In this project i helped my supervisor (safety site supervisor)
monitored the site and to ensure the workers are safe from any injured. Furthermore, i also learned
a lot of new things that will give me advantages in working experience later. This is because, the
company has taught me to all things regarding safety matters and even how the construction site
management systems. Indeed, i am ready to face the challenges in the future.

Apart from that, i gain professional knowledge and skills during my industrial training with
KEP contracting sdn bhd. Under the project at Animal Research & Service Centre (ARASC), i got
to meet with a lot of experiences people from various types of company such as SN Shamsul Rizal
Architect, KSK and Partners, TNA Consulting Engineers Sdn. Bhd, MEC’S Engineer Sdn. Bhd
and Biogard Asia (M) Sdn. Bhd. These companies are also in charge in the project where i worked.
With these opportunities, i gained new knowledge, improve my communications skills and have a
good connection with them.

Overall, industrial training provides many advantages and benefits to students. This is
because student is exposed to a variety of tasks assigned as well exposed to the real working
environment. Finally, students can learn a new skill such as communication and social
relationships

CHAPTER 4: DESCRIPTION OF TASK ASSIGNED

Below is the task I was assign during my training at Animal Research & Service Centre,
ARASC under KEP CONTRACTING sdn bhd which help my theoretical knowledge and skills.
Most of the tasks given mostly involve in construction site which is to protecting the safety, health
and welfare of employees at the workplace. The objective is to protect the workers from any harm
and reduced the risk to happened at site. Hence, to prevent the workers from sustaining work-
related injuries and illnesses.

4.1 COVID-19 ANTIGEN RAPID TEST

I was in charge to do the covid-19 test every month to the employees to ensure they are
not affected to covid-19. Since the start of the pandemic, the Ministry of Health and the Department
of Occupational Safety and Health have set forth guidelines to help employers to create a safe
workplace for their employees. The covid-19 test should be done according to the government's
implementation. By doing this test, we get to detect if there is in an employee who is positive or
not. If the employee has a symptom like fever, cough and so on they are advised to stay at home.
This is to ensure that the site can continue to operate.

Figure 1: During the Covid-19 test

14
4.2 SAFETY BRIEFING

Safety briefings are an effective approach to maintain safety and health to the employee
while also making them aware of current dangers and hazards in the workplace. Daily safety
briefings to all employees is to ensure all workers have a good health and safety culture. There is a
legal requirement under The Construction Design and Management Regulations (CDM
Regulations), it stated to consult with and involve employees in order to ensure that they are fully
informed of the dangers and hazards that they face on construction sites.

During my training, I have conducted safety briefing to the employee every month. Here
is where I can use my knowledge that I have learned. There are many types of works at construction
such as fittings work, steel reinforcement work, coating work and many more. Those works require
employees to wear PPE to protect them from getting injured. During the safety briefings, I advise
and explained the important of wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), sound exposure
limit, ergonomic and many more. Apart from that, not all the workers can understand the
explanation because of the language barrier, so I prepared the key points and repeat the main points
at the beginning and end of the talk. By doing this, it is easy for me to communicate with them and
they can easily understand what I said.

Figure 2: During the safety briefing

15
4.3 FINDING HAZARD

Another task that I was assigned is to finding the hazard occur at site. My supervisor has
given me the file of HIRARC, as a guideline to finding the hazard. After doing the inspection at
site, I found many hazards occur while they performing their works. Once I found the hazard, I
need to take a picture as proof to put on the monthly safety report. Not to forget, my duties are to
correct any unsafe practice and doing inspection at the construction site. Lastly, I also need to keep
the site clean and safe to create a better work environment.

16
4.4 CHECKLIST ON COMPLIANCE TO PPE

Daily checklist is a checklist that must be filled out every day so that the company can
easily identify which employees do not comply with the requirements and the company can take
appropriate action to prevent it from happening again. These checklists will be included on the
monthly safety report and will be discuss on the meeting with all the directors.

The checklist contains the name of the employees, IC number, green card number and
expiry date. Also, what PPE they not comply such as safety hat, safety boots and helmet. I was
assigned by the supervisor to filled and update the checklist daily. Before I filled the checklist with
warned, advised and complied, I will approach and advise the workers to wear PPE, if they are
still insisting, I will record their name on the checklist.

CHAPTER 5: CONCLUSION

After finishing my 23 weeks training with KEP contracting sdn bhd, i have gain more
knowledge and experience in real building construction and better understanding about safety site
supervisor (SSS) jobs scope. it also helped me to understand what is happening on site apart from
the theoretical aspect. At site, i gained practical, technical knowledge and experience regarding
situations of the working site and how to overcome any difficulties. Throughout my industrial
periods, safety site supervisor has taught me about the how to reduce risk and harm at site and how
to create a better workplace, by giving me any files related for my references and by guidance me.

Industrial training does not only expose the students to what they are being taught in the
university by papers and syllabus but also to the skills which are needed later. For instance, time
management, soft skill, creativity skill, proper manner in the industrial sector, self-confidence and
so on. I also got to know a lot of people from various organisation and builds a good connection
with them to helped me to express my interest and suggestion.

To conclude, industrial training is important as it give a lot of benefits to student to

prepared themselves on how the working environment worked before starting their own career.
Not only that student can also know what field they want to pursue in the future. Lastly, it such a
great experience to undergo training with KEP contracting sdn bhd and hoping to learn more in
the future.
