PRELIMINARY REPORT
(1/20222023)
GROUP :5
SECTION :5
An integrated design project (IDP) is a multidisciplinary project that includes civil engineering
disciplines such as surveying, geotechnical, hydraulic, structural, infrastructure and
environmental engineering. It is a first insight into the design of construction projects for
students before they are confronted with the real work situation after graduation. Students have
to demonstrate their knowledge and technical competence in planning the construction project,
while also demonstrating the soft skills required for efficient and problem-solving teamwork.
In this project, we have to propose, design, review and fabricate the structural and
infrastructural components of the building design based on the drawing prepared by the
architect. Firstly, for the structural aspect, a comprehensive proposal of structural drawing
layout with the design of structural elements, the use of ESTEEM software for structural
design, and review the design output of manual and software design. Secondly, the
infrastructural aspect of the project includes earthworks, drainage system, sewerage, water
supply, and other components.
In addition, this design practise also includes project management, which encompasses the
theory, tools, and techniques of engineering design and creative problem solving, as well as
design issues in civil engineering. Apart from this, the knowledge and technical aspects of this
integrated design project are tremendously helpful in enabling students to apply the civil
engineering knowledge acquired during their studies in a real-life application and
comprehensive learning.

5.0 DESIGN PROCESS AND PARAMETERS
The goal of every structure is to be designed based on its strength, stability, and serviceability.
Normally, there are three requirements that need to be satisfied in design of a structure. The
three requirements are stability to prevent the overturning or buckling of the structure, the
strength to withstand the stressed caused by various loads, and lastly the serviceability to
guarantee adequate performance under the service load conditions. Therefore, to meet these
goals, the structural design should comply with the standards and design code.
14
5.2 Design Parameters
1) Concrete cover
Concrete cover or also known as nominal cover will be calculated using the Equation
4.1 in Clause 4.4.1.1 (2) from Eurocode 2 as shown below.
Cnom = Cmin + Δ Cdev
To determine the value of Cmin, the greater value between minimal cover with regards
to bond, nominal cover with regard to durability, and minimal required axis distance
for R60 resistance shall be used. The recommended value of Δ Cdev according to the
National Annex is 10 mm. The parameter that will be used to determine the value
of Cmin, are as follows.
i) Exposure class – Exposure class that used in this project is XC3 referred to
the Table 4.1 MS EN 1992-1-1: 2004 that is suitable for dry and
permanently wet.
ii) Design life – The design life for the building will refer to the Clause 2.3 in
MS EN 1990, which is 50 years in category 4.
iii) Fire resistance – The standard fire resistance is R60 based on the Uniform
Building by Law.
iv) Durability – The minimum cover with regards to the durability used in this
project is 25 mm.
v) Bond – The minimum cover due to bond is 10 mm which is same as the
diameter of reinforcement bar, by referred to the Table 4.2 in BS EN 1992-
1-1:2004
2) Loadings
There are two types of loading, permanent action and variable action are taken
into consideration.
i) Characteristics Permanent Action, Gk - Permanent actions, which also
known as dead loads, are those actions that remain constant throughout
time, such as self-weight of beam, column, slabs, walls, and finishes.
ii) Characteristics Variable Action, Qk – Action caused by people.
