3. Presentation

The BCM800 is built as a 19" rack-mounted module. It will be

mounted on a 19" hinged frame or cubicle frame of the local
control panel.
The BCM800 consists of a backplane with connection terminals
and relays and a front mimic with feeder single-line screen print
and related indication and control elements such as push-
buttons, alarm indicators, selection key-switches and
measurement units.
The front view of the mimic is project specific. Particularly the
screen-print and all elements that are part of the mimic and their
placement can vary from project to project. The inscriptions on
the mimic are made with multi color screen-printing. The colors,
inscriptions, and the arrangement of the objects are tailored for
each customer. A mimic-layout-editor, which is based on
Microsoft VISIO® supports the user for the creation of the mimic
layout.

4. Functions and features

• LOCAL Mimic HMI Mode (only modern BCS59x solution)

In LOCAL mode the BCM800 mimic serves as the input

device for the IED bay controller. Inputs are monitored by the
IED and checked for plausibility. An interlocking and blocking
logic that is implemented in the IED prevent incorrect
operation that could lead to damage to the primary elements.
Additional interlocking and blocking is conventionally made
with auxiliary contacts. This philosophy provides a
redundancy in the interlocking and blocking scheme.
• EMERGENCY Mimic HMI Mode (modern BCS59x solution) /
LOCAL Mimic HMI Mode (conventional BCS59x solution)

If the IED bay controller is out of service because of a fault, a

change can be made at any time to emergency mode. In this
operation mode, all the HV switching devices can be
controlled. The interlocking and blocking is conventionally
made with auxiliary contacts. This functionality is also used
for conventional BCS59x cubicles in local mode.
• Up to 8 HV switching devices can be monitored and control-
led with one BCM800 unit
The standardized interface of the BCM800 is independent
from the connected switchgear type (AIS and GIS) or IED
type.
• Scalable solution
• Standard Interface to Primary Equipment
• Standard Interface to Remote Control (for conventional
BCS59x solutions)
• Standard Interface to IED
• Local and remote control of up to 8 switches per BCM800
• Supports two step control philosophy (Select object -
Execute open or close)
• Double operation interlock
• Runtime supervision
• Additional control command possible (e.g. Pump reset)
• Supports interlocking and interlocking override
• Emergency control (independent from IED)

6

6.1. Object status indication

Circuit breaker with alarm LED: Disconnector with alarm LED

Fig. 6.2 Object status indication

The position indication of the circuit breaker and disconnectors

are shown on the mimic HMI. LED indicators are used for the
status indication 2 . The arrangement of the object indicators
can be freely engineered with the Mimic Editor. One object
indicator is composed of four LEDs. The two red LEDs represent
the closed status and the two green LEDs represent the open
status of the switch. If at the same time all four LEDs are dark an
undefined or running status is represented. The movement of a
switch can be monitored from the mimic panel. The start of an
operation begins from a defined position. The status indication
for the object in question is changing into the undefined state.
When the drive reaches its end position, the status indication
shows the new position.
Optionally a fifth LED can be included per object 3 . The fifth
LED is yellow and is used to indicate a group alarm for the object
concerned.

6.2. Interlocking Override

The interlocking operation is defined by the interlock override
key switch 7 . The key is only removable in the OFF-position.

The following positions are available:

• OFF
Bay and switchgear interlocking is active.
• ON

The actual interlocking conditions are by-passed in this position.

Bay and switchgear interlocking conditions prevail such that a
drive in an undefined position can still be controlled. The
conventionally made interlocking with auxiliary contacts will be
overridden and the interlocking logic that is implemented in the
IED will be taken out of use.

6.3. Control mode key switch

The operation authority is defined by the control mode key
switch 6 . The key is removable in all positions.

CONTROL MODE

The following positions are available:

• OFF
Operation is blocked. However for save maintenance
conditions the primary equipment must be blocked directly at
the primary equipment as well (e.g. crank handle lock). The
circuit breaker protection trip commands are not blocked in
this mode"

13
ABB Switzerland Ltd BCM800 1MRB520312-Uen

• EMERGENCY

The emergency mode (direct control) is used if the IED is out of

service or disturbed. All HV switching devices can be controlled
from the mimic HMI but the IED is by-passed and guided
operations are not possible.
Attention: The synchro-check function, which is a part of the IED
is out of service and only the conventionally made interlocking
and blocking are available in this operation mode.

• LOCAL
Control authority is given to the mimic HMI. Control
operations from the mimic HMI are accepted. Remote control
operations are inhibited. The BCM800 mimic serves as the
input device for the IED bay controller. Inputs are monitored
by the IED and checked for plausibility. An interlocking and
blocking logic that is implemented in the IED prevent
incorrect operation that could lead to damage to the primary
elements. Additional some interlocking and blocking functions
are conventionally made with auxiliary contacts. This
philosophy provides a redundancy in the interlocking and
blocking scheme.
• REMOTE
Control authority is given to a higher level and the installation
can be controlled remotely (either SAS Working place or
NCC). Commands received via the serial interface of the IED
are accepted. Control operation from the mimic HMI is
inhibited in this operating mode.

6.4. Local/Remote HMI operation (guided and supervised control

for modern control)

Switch handling can be performed remotely in the operating

mode REMOTE or at the bay location itself in the operating
mode LOCAL. Switch handling is only possible when the
interlocking conditions are met and the drive is not blocked. To
put a drive into action, a two step operation has to be performed
(select before execute).

The following steps have to be done for the modern control

solution:
• SELECT OBJECT
Each controllable object can be selected on the mimic HMI

14
BCM800 1MRB520312-Uen ABB Switzerland Ltd

by pushing the corresponding SELECT pushbutton 1 . The

selected pushbutton lights up after pushing the button and
the interlocking and blocking conditions are checked. A
failure indication is given in case of one or more conditions
are violated. If all conditions are OK then the first relay on the
BCM800 is activated and the LED indicator of the
corresponding CLOSE or OPEN control pushbutton starts
flashing (guided operation). The system is ready for the next
step.
• OPERATE COMMAND
The SELECT push-button remains selected and the CLOSE
or OPEN control push button remains flashing until the
corresponding control command is executed from the control
pushbuttons 4 or until a timeout has elapsed. The control
commands are executed with the CLOSE, OPEN or CANCEL
pushbuttons. Depending on the actual status of the switch
and the interlocking function, the control mode either
executes the selected command (second relay on the
BCM800 is activated) or activates the mimic HMI LED to
indicate that the operation is inhibited or has failed. Switching
is coordinated and monitored by the IED in that case.

6.5. Emergency HMI operation

The following steps have to be done in the emergency control
mode:
• SELECT OBJECT
Each controllable object can be selected on the mimic HMI
by pushing the corresponding SELECT pushbutton 1 . After
pushing the button the first relay on the BCM800 is activated
and the system is ready for the next step.
• OPERATE COMMAND
Keep on pushing the SELECT button while a control button
4 is pushed (two hand operation). The control commands
are executed with the CLOSE or OPEN push-buttons.
Depending on the actual status of the switch and the
conventionally made interlocking function, the operation will
be performed (second relay on the BCM800 is activated).

15
ABB Switzerland Ltd BCM800 1MRB520312-Uen

6.6. Operation indicators (guarded and supervised HMI

indications)
The operation indicators are included in the modern local control.
The operation indicators
5 showing the failure status of the actual operation such as
'Attention interlocked', 'Failed to Operate' or 'Crank handle in
use'.

6.7. Alarm Indication, Alarm Acknowledge and Pump reset

One pushbutton 8 is for alarm indication and alarm
acknowledge and one pushbutton 10 is for pump reset:
The alarm indication 8 starts flashing if an alarm is outstanding.
The detailed alarm description is shown on the built in alarm
LEDs on the IED. The alarms are manually acknowledged by
pushing the alarm indication button 8 . If no alarm is active after
the acknowledgement the alarm indication disappears. If the
alarm is still active after the acknowledgement the alarm
indication changes to steady lightning. If the previous active
alarm was a pump alarm then the pump lockout can be released
(pump reset) by pushing the pump reset button 10 .

6.8. Lamp Test

After pushing the Lamp Test 9 all LEDs located on the bay
control mimic light up and the operation of all the LEDs can be
checked.
