CONFINED SPACE PROCEDURES

This procedure details our standard procedures for entering permit required confined spaces.
Management will provide identification of permitted required spaces, communication of the
confined space procedure, and enforcing compliance.

Employees will be responsible for complying and understanding the confined space procedures.

Definition: Confined Space is defined as: any space, which, by design, has limited openings for
entry and exit, unfavorable ventilation which could contain or produce air contaminants, and
which is not intended for continuous employee occupancy. Confined spaces include tanks,
fermenters, sewers, manholes, incinerators, boilers, or any other chamber or space where it is a
possibility of accumulation of hazardous vapors or oxygen deficiency.

Entering a confined space is defined as breaking the plane of the opening with a body part,

DEFINITIONS

Confined Space

Confined Space is defined as: any space, which, by design, has limited openings for entry and
exit, unfavorable ventilation which could contain or produce air contaminants, and which is not
intended for continuous employee occupancy. Confined spaces include tanks, fermenters,
sewers, manholes, incinerators, boilers, or any other chamber or space where it is a possibility of
accumulation of hazardous vapors or oxygen deficiency.

Personal Protection Equipment (PPE)

The equipment which is appropriate for the entry of the Confined Space. These consist of hard
hats, face shields, approropriate gloves, air monitors, blowers, retrival system, communication
devices, SCBA, and tools.

Confined Space Entry Permit

This document tells what hazards could in the permit space and how to control them. It will
contain a checklist of necessary safety measures, atmospheric conditions, equipment required for
entry and work and procedures for rescue. It will show the designation of who the entry
supervisor, attendant, is and entrant.

Entry Supervisor

The attendant at the site who makes sure conditions is safe. He will be responsible for Before
Entry Procedures and During Entry Procedures. The attendant will be required to fill out the
Confined Space Permit

Attendant

As an attendant, you will the responsible to stay at his post to observe conditions and support the
entrant. The attendant must know the hazards of the confine space and the signs of exposure.
Keep a current count and be able to identify all entrants. Also stay in continuous contact with
the entrants. Be sure only authorized people enter the space or the area surrounding the space.
Orders the entrants out of the space in case of emergency or conditions that will not support a
safe working space.

Entrant

This is the worker who will actually enter the confined pace to perform the work. Be sure to
know the hazards of the space and the signs of exposure. Follow our Authority’s personal
protective equipment training. Keep in contact with the attendant and be able to leave the space
at once if you are ordered to evacuate. Always be ready to evacuate quickly and if possible
without help.
