ELECTRICAL CIRCUITS I

Seatwork No. 1

Solve the following neatly and completely.

1. A coil of Nichrome II wire 0.4mm in diameter wound in a single layer of cylindrical form
so that the mean diameter of its turn is 2cm and its resistance is 24Ω. How many turns
of wire are this wire wound resistor? Use 𝜌𝑁𝑖𝑐ℎ𝑟𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝐼𝐼 = 110 × 10−8 Ω − 𝑚.
2. Three resistors 𝑅1 , 𝑅2 and 𝑅3 are connected in series-parallel with 𝑅1 in series with
the parallel combination of 𝑅2 and 𝑅3 . The whole combination is connected across a 120V
DC source. Resistors 𝑅1 , 𝑅2 and 𝑅3 take 750W, 250W and 200W respectively. Calculate
the resistance 𝑅2 . Draw the circuit.

3. A 16Ω resistor is connected in series with a parallel combination of two resistors. One
of which has an ohmic value of 48Ω, the other one R being unknown. What is the
resistance of R if the power taken by the 16Ω unit is equal to the power in the parallel
combination pair of resistors? Draw the circuit.

4. Solve 𝑉𝑥 and the power absorbed by 12-Ω resistor.
