CHAPTER 1:

HISTORY, FACILITIES AND


EQUIPMENT OF SEPAK
TAKRAW
▶ History of Sepak Takraw
▶ Sepak Takraw was originated in Malaysia .
▶ In the 15th century, it was played by the royal court.
In 16th century,
▶ the game was introduced across Indonesia and called it
Sepak Raga. By 1940,
▶ Southeast Asia, used the game with net and formal
rules and regulations were formed for the game.
▶ The first official Sepak Takraw competition was held
on May 16th,
▶ 1945 in Penang, participating teams were from various
villages of Penang. the game used to be called Sepak
Raga Jaring.
▶ In 1950, countries from Southeast Asia played it and
introduced almost every school.

▶ The Malaysian Sepak Raga Federation was
founded in 1960 at Penang.
▶ 1965, -included in South East Asia Peninsular
Games and formally named as Sepak Takraw
▶ .The Asian Sepak takraw Federation (ASTAF)
was founded as the governing committee of the
sport in 1965.

▶ In1992, the International Sepak takraw


Federation (ISTAF) was formed as the world
governing body of the game.
▶ Sepak Takraw is one of the popular games in
Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia,
▶ Korea, Japan, India,
▶ Philippines, Brunei, USA,
▶ Pakistan and Canada.

TAKRAW

▶ a) Facilities
▶ 1) Sepak Takraw Court
▶ Sepak takraw court is similar to the court of
volleyball with a flat, horizontal and uniform
surface.
▶ Court borderlines =3 meters away from all
obstacles.
▶ The net height at the centre is around 5 feet 1
inch.
Different parts of the Sepak Takraw court are as
follows:
Court dimension
dimension of 13.4m (meters) x 6.1m free from all
obstacles up to the height of 8m from the floor
surface. The width of the lines borders of the court
should not be more than 0.03m measured and
drawn inwards from the edge of the court
measurements.
Center Line
The Center Line of 0.02m shall be drawn at the
center of the court that divides the court into two ,
right side and left side.

Quarter Circle
At both ends of the Center Line , the Quarter
Circle shall be drawn from the sidelines measuring
a radius of 0.9m with the .02 m border lines.
Service Circle =
0.3m radius drawn on the left and right sides
ofthe court,
the center must be 2.45m from the back line and
3.05meter from the sidelines of the court.
Service Circle =
The width of the border line of the Service Circle
shall be 0.04m.

Free Zone
The court shall have an area free from any
obstructions within 3.0m away in all side.
2. POSTS

The posts shall be 1.55m for men and 1.45m for


women in height from the floor and 0.04m in radius
and stand firmly to maintain high net tension.

The posts shall be erected firmly 0.3m away from the


sideline and shall be in line with the Center Line.
b. Equipment OF SEPAK TAKRAW

NET
The net shall be made of fine nylon cord with a mesh of
0.06m to 0.08m.

The net is 0.7m in width and must not be shorter than


6.1m in length placed vertically over the Center Line

Two side bands of 0.05m wide fastened vertically to the


net and placed above each sideline.

1.52m for men and 1.42m for women while the height at

Topic 3: Terminologies used in Sepak Takraw

TERMINOLOGIES

Center line
A line that divides the court into two sides.
Free Zone
An area outside the court between the edge of the court
lines and the A- board.
Post
A cylindrical upright bar made of strong material to be
used to hold the net firmly

Quarter line
An area inside the court where the inner players are
stationed during service.

Service Circle
An area inside the court where the Tekong (server)
positions himself during the service.
Left Inside Player
A player inside the quarter circle to the left of the Tekong
during the service.
Opponent
The opposite Regu in a match .
Regu
Referred to as a group and may be composed of two or three
players.
Regu in a team event referred to as 1st Regu , 2nd Regu and 3rd
Regu.
Regu Captain
A leader of a Regu who wears an armband on the left upper
arm.
Reserve Player
A player who maybe used to replace another player in the Regu,
also known as substitute.
Right Inside Player
A player inside the quarter circle to the right of the Tekong
during the service.
Substitution
An act of replacing one players as a reserve(s).

Tekong
A player also known as “Server” that serves the ball.

Injury
Physical disability as a result of a fall or incident rendering
the player unable the player unable to continue play.
Let
A call made by the referee to repeat for a play.

Love-all = All zero

Point
A call by the referee when a point is awarded to a
team.
Warning

When the referee calls the player to remind them for


their action, which will lead to a fault or caution card if a
repetition of the same actions is made.
Serve
The contact that starts every rally
The action for the serve is called a Service.
The ball is tossed by any inside player to the

Tekong who is positioned in the service circle.

Tekong have to execute the serve by kicking the ball

Block
made by any player at the net to prevent the ball from
coming over when an opposing player is trying to send
the ball over the net.

Having Lost
It is result classified as forfeiture or disqualification in a
game.
Heading
A contact when a player hit or receive the ball using
his/her head to send over the net or to pass to his team
mates.
Match
It is played by two groups, a “Regu” or “Regus”, each
consist of three players.
Match point
A point that will determine the winner of the game
Spike
player jumps to hit the ball with his/ her feet off the
ground to hit the ball in an aerial manner.

Setting up to twenty-five points


A announcement by the Referee at a point in time when
the score is 20-20. The match shall continue until one
Regu attains a lead of two points or the match ends at
score of 25-24 whichever comes first.
Spike
A contact when the player jumps to hit the ball with his/
her feet off the ground to hit the ball in an aerial manner.
Setting up to twenty-five points

the score is 20-20. The match shall continue until one
Regu attains a lead of two points or the match ends at
score of 25-24 whichever comes first.
Set point
A point that will declare a Regu wins the set, first set ,
second set.

Sent Off
Another word for expulsion . or removing a player
inside the court. Or playing venue.
