My Life as a Drip
                       Water Cycle Story Starter

Think about that refreshing drink of water you had.  Where do

you think that water came from?  How far do you think the water has
traveled in a day?  A week?  A year?  How long do you think it has been
around?
In this activity, you will imagine that you are a drop of water and
write a short story about your life.  You may want to create a persona
for your drop - a name, attitude, and/or inner dialogue that is unique to
your drop.  The beginning and ending prompts are given to you.
Your job is to tell what happened as the drop (you) travels
through the steps of the water cycle.

STEP 1:  Choose your beginning from the following prompts…

“Once I was floating around in a cloud…”
“Once I was just a drop of water in the middle of the ocean…”
“Once I was a little flake of snow on the top of a mountain…”
“Once I was trapped in the ground underneath a river…”
“Once I was part of a huge, thundering waterfall…”
“Once I was lying in a puddle in the middle of a parking lot…”
“Once I was swimming with dolphins in the ocean…”

STEP 2:  Choose your ending from the following prompts…

“...and that’s how I ended up in this lake.”
“...and then some seventh-grade kid drank me up.”
“...and now I’m just part of an iceberg.”
“...and then a dandelion sucked me up with its roots.”
“...and now I’m stuck here in this sewer.”
“...and I’ve been floating around in this swimming pool ever since.”

STEP 3:  Fill in the middle…

1. Your drop (you) MUST “visit” each stage in the water cycle while
taking your adventure.
2. Use the checklist below to make sure you have each stage of the
water cycle included in your story.
3. Include interesting, descriptive details.
4. You MUST underline or highlight each stage.
5. You MUST explain each stage (ie. I floated up to the clouds
where I started to shiver, lost some thermal energy, and
condensed.  I changed from a gas to a liquid.)
6. First - make a rough draft of your story.
7. Next, make corrections and check to see if you met the
requirements.
8. Then, type your story on a Google Doc and then share the final
copy with me.

 Evaporation
 Condensation
 Precipitation
 Transpiration
 Accumulation
 Sublimation
