Solutions
(1) a. 60

Step 1
We have been told that ♠ × 5 = ♥. This means, 1 heart is same in value as 5 spades.

Step 2

We have also been told that ♥ − ♠ = 40. This means that:

Value of 1 heart − Value of 1 spade = 40

In the first step, we learnt that the value of 1 heart is same as the value of 5 spades.
Combining these two facts, we can say that:
Value of 5 spades − Value of 1 spade = 40

This means, the value of 4 spades is 40.

Step 3

1 40
If the value of 4 spades is 40, then the value of 1 spade will be of 40, that is, = 10
4 4

Step 4
Going back to what we learnt in step 1, the value of 1 heart = 10 × 5 = 50

Step 5
This means, the value of 1 heart + the value of 1 spade is = 50 + 10 = 60

Step 6
Now, the value of ♥ + ♠ is 60.

(2) b. 437

Step 1
We have been told that George has 464 chocolates and Ankur has 156 fewer chocolates than
George. This means Ankur has 464 - 156 = 308 chocolates.

Step 2
We have also been told that Ismail has 129 chocolates more than the number of chocolates
Ankur has. This means, Ismail has 308 + 129 = 437 chocolates.

(3) d. 1

Step 1
It is given that sum of fractions is equal to 1. Therefore, numerator and denominator of the
sum should be equal.

Step 2
On addition of fraction we get:
9 1 +9+1
+ + =
11 11 11 11

Step 3
As we know that numerator and denominator of sum are equal:
+ 9 + 1 = 11

Step 4
Now, we can be seen that the above relation is satisfied only when is equal to 1.
Therefore, =1

(4) d. In the last two weeks Company A manufactured fewer cameras than Company B.

Step 1
Let us observe the given table and check for every option individually.

Step 2
Option a: In the first two weeks, Company A manufactured 100 + 60 = 160 cameras and
company B manufactured 110 + 60 = 170 cameras. This tells us that in the first two weeks
Company A manufactured fewer cameras than Company B. Hence, the given statement is
false.

Step 3
Option b: In 4 weeks, Company A manufactured 100 + 60 + 40 + 70 = 270 cameras and
company B manufactured 110 + 60 + 50 + 70 = 290 cameras. This tells us that in 4 weeks
Company A manufactured fewer cameras than Company B. Hence, the given statement is
false.

Step 4
Option c: In the first and last week together, Company A manufactured 100 + 70 = 170
cameras and company B manufactured 110 + 70 = 180 cameras. This tells us that in the first
and last week together Company A manufactured fewer cameras than Company B. Hence,
the given statement is false.

Step 5
Option d: In the last two weeks, Company A manufactured 70 + 40 = 110 cameras and
company B manufactured 70 + 50 = 120 cameras. This tells us that in the last two weeks
Company A manufactured fewer cameras than Company B. The statement is true.

Step 6
So, we found out that statement d is true.

12
(5) d.
16

Step 1
Total number of squares = 4 × 4 = 16

Step 2
Number of squares that have alphabet = 12

Step 3
Number of squares that have alphabet 12
Fraction of squares that have alphabets = =
Total number of squares 16

(6) d. 3

Step 1
Given, there are 5000 pine trees and no tree has more than 2000 needles.

Step 2
Here, the pine trees are the pigeons and the 2000 different possible numbers of needles are
the pigeonholes.
The number of pine trees is more than the different possible number of needles.
n 1
Thus, the ratio of pigeons to pigeonholes is 5000 ÷ 2000 = 2 .
k 2
1
However, the number of trees cannot be 2 .
2

Therefore by the pigeonhole principle, there must be at least 3 trees with the same number of
needles.

Step 3
Hence, the least number of trees that must have the same number of needles is 3.

(7) 9

Step 1

Let us consider the last equation. It says that cost of 1 is 6

Step 2
The second equation is:

+ + = 30

And the first equation is:

+ + + = 50

We observe here that the first equation can be easily replaced here to get:

30 + = 50

Which means that the cost of will be 50 - 30 = 20.

Step 3

Substituting the value of in equation third.

We have,

+ 20 = 29

or, = 29 - 20 = 9

Step 4

Thus, the cost of one will be 9.

(8) 86107

Step 1
Let us subtract the first number from the second number:
83607 − 81107 = 2500

Step 2
Similarly, we need to subtract the second number from the third, third number from the fourth,
fourth number from the fifth and so on.

Step 3
It is clear from the above steps that there is a difference of 2500 between each consecutive
number in this series. Hence, the missing number would be:
83607 + 2500 = 86107

(9) 378

Step 1
The third multiple of 6 is 6 × 3 = 18.

Step 2
The seventh multiple of 3 is 3 × 7 = 21.

Step 3
Gauri multiplies 18 and 21. The result will be 18 × 21 = 378.

1
(10)
3

Step 1
We are given that in a class 2 girls and 4 boys like volleyball, 7 girls and 2 boys like
basketball, 3 girls and 8 boys like football and the remaining students like tennis.
We will first calculate the number of students who like tennis.

Step 2
Total number of students in the class = 40

Number of students who like sports other than tennis = Number of students who like
volleyball + Number of students who like basketball + Number of students who like football
Number of students who like sports other than tennis = (2 + 4) + (7 + 2) + (3 + 8)

Number of students who like sports other than tennis = 6 + 9 + 11

Number of students who like sports other than tennis = 26

Number of students who like tennis = Total number of students in the class − Number of
students who like other sports
Number of students who like tennis = 40 − 26

Number of students who like tennis = 14

Step 3
Now, we know that 14 students like tennis and we are also given that an equal number of
boys and girls like tennis.
14
Therefore, Number of boys who like tennis and the number of girls who like tennis = = 7
2

Step 4
Now the number of boys who like tennis = 7

Total number of boys in the class = Number of boys who like volleyball + Number of boys
who like basketball + Number of boys who like football + Number of boys who like tennis
Total number of boys in the class = 4 + 2 + 8 + 7 = 21

Number of boys who like tennis

The fraction of boys who like tennis =
 Total number of boys

7 1
The fraction of boys who like tennis = =
21 3

Step 5
1
Hence, the fraction of boys who like tennis = .
