Zero Exponents and Negative Exponents


In the quotient rule for exponents, the exponent in the numerator is always greater than the exponent
in the denominator. Let us consider a fraction where the exponents in the numerator and denominator are

the same. If we apply the quotient rule to the fraction 3, we would obtain 70 . Because any nonzero number

divided by itself is equal to 1, we would finally obtain 1.

These are equal.

In general, we have this rule.

Rule:
ZERO EXPONENT
𝑥 0 = 1, where 𝑥 ≠ 0.
Any number, excluding zero, with an exponent of zero is equal to one.

To show that 𝑥 0 = 1, let us consider the product 𝑥 0 ∙ 𝑥, where x ≠ 0.
