Introduction

AutoCAD is a computer-aided software design and drafting application developed by


Autodesk, an American multinational corporation. AutoCAD runs on operating systems like
Windows, macOS, iOS, Android. It is available in 13 different languages: English, German,
French, Italian, Spanish, Korean, Chinese, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Czech, Polish,
Hungarian. Before discussing the technicalities involved in AutoCAD, its commands,
applications etc., let’s understand in a more distinguished way how was the world before and
after AutoCAD. The below pictures can make any layman understand what AutoCAD is and
how it has revolutionized the design industry.

AutoCAD can be used in any industry where automation of design is required. AutoCAD is
used in the Automobile industry, Fashion industry by graphic designers, civil engineers, etc.
So far, we have understood what AutoCAD is and how it is used in different industries. Now
let’s go through how it works, how to use AutoCAD software, its commands, tips, and tricks
to use it. To make the understanding of the software less complicated, let us first into the
basic commands, then to the intermediate and advanced commands lastly.

Specific Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

- Create their own drawing


- Familiarize with the various commands used in AutoCAD
- To be able to draw straight lines by means of absolute, relative and polar coordinates.
- To be able to draw curve lines by means of arcs and circles.
- To be able to move the drawing space using zooming and panning.

Lesson Proper

Various components of the basic AutoCAD screen are the menu bar, drawing area,
several toolbars, command window, model and layout tabs and status bar. The title bar
has an AutoCAD symbol, and the current drawing name is displayed on top of the screen.

Draw Commands

Line – Create a series of contiguous line segments. Each segment is a line object that
can be edited separately.

Command: Line

Result: Draw a straight-line segment from one point to the next

1. ABSOLUTE CO-ORDINATE
Using this method, you enter the points as they relate to the origin of the
WCS. To enter a point just enter in the exact point as X, Y.

Command: LINE
Specify first point: 1, 2
Specify next point or [Undo]: 3, 2
Specify next point or [Undo]: 3, 4
Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: 1, 4
Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: 1, 2
Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: C

2. RELATIVE CO-ORDINATES
Specify a point relative to the X & Y distance from the first point in the format
@ X, Y where @ is the relative last point or last points.

Command: LINE
Specify first point: 4.5,2
Specify next point or [Undo]: @2, 0
Specify next point or [Undo]: @0, 2
Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: @-2, 0
Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: @0, -2
Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: C

3. POLAR CO-ORDINATES
You will use this system if you know that you want to draw a line a certain
distance at particular angle. You would enter this as @D<A. In this case, D is
the distance and A is the angle.

Command: LINE
Specify first point: 8, 2
Specify next point or [Undo]: @1<45
Specify next point or [Undo]: @1<135
Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: @1<225
Specify next point or [Close/Undo]: @1<315

Circle – Creates a circle based on a center point and a radius or diameter value.

Command: Circle

Result: Draws a circle based on a center point and a radius or diameter
value.

1. Radius - Enter a value, or specify a point.

Command: CIRCLE
Specify center point for circle or [3P/2P/Ttr (tan tan radius)]: CLICK
ANYPOINT
Specify radius of circle or [Diameter] <1.0000>: 1

2. Diameter - Enter a value, or specify a second point.


Command: CIRCLE
Specify center point for circle or [3P/2P/Ttr (tan tan radius)]: CLICK
ANYPOINT
Specify radius of circle or [Diameter] <1.0000>: D
Specify diameter of circle <2.0000>: 0.750

3. 2P (Two Points) – Creates a circle based on two endpoints of the diameter.

Command: CIRCLE
Specify center point for circle or [3P/2P/Ttr (tan tan radius)]: 2P
Specify first end point of circle's diameter: CLICK POINT1
Specify second end point of circle's diameter: CLICK POINT2

4. 3P (Three Points) – Creates a circle based on three points on the circumference.

Command: CIRCLE
Specify center point for circle or [3P/2P/Ttr (tan tan radius)]: 3P
Specify first point on circle: CLICK POINT1
Specify second point on circle: CLICK POINT2
Specify third point on circle: CLICK POINT3

5. TTR (Tangent, Tangent, Radius)

Creates a circle with a specified radius and tangent to two objects. Sometimes
more than one circle matches the specified criteria. The program draws the circle
of the specified radius whose tangent points are closest to the selected points.

Command: CIRCLE
Specify center point for circle or [3P/2P/Ttr (tan tan radius)]: TTR
Specify point on object for first tangent of circle: CLICK POINT1
Specify point on object for second tangent of circle: CLICK POINT2
Specify radius of circle <6.0000>: 0.175
Arc – To create an arc, you can specify combinations of center, endpoint, start point,
radius, angle, chord length, and direction values.

Command: Arc
Keystroke: ARC/A

Result: Draws an arc based on a center point and 2 endpoints

Command: ARC
Specify start point of arc or [Center]: CLICK POINT1
Specify second point of arc or [Center/End]: CLICK POINT2
Specify end point of arc: CLICK POINT3

NOTE: If you press ENTER without specifying a point, the endpoint of the last
drawn line or arc is used, and you are immediately prompted to specify the endpoint
of the new arc. This creates an arc tangent to the last drawn line, arc, or polyline.

Second point
Specify the second point (2) is a point on the circumference of the arc.

End point
Specify the final point (3) on the arc.

You can specify a three-point arc either clockwise or counterclockwise.

Rectangle – Creates a rectangular polyline from the specified the rectangle


parameters (length, width, rotation).

Command: Rectang

Result: Draws a rectangle after you enter one corner and then the
second.
Command: REC
Specify first corner point or [Chamfer/Elevation/Fillet/Thickness/Width]: CLICK

Polygon – Creates an equilateral closed polyline.

Command: POLYGON

Result: Creates an equilateral closed polyline.

Note: Minimum side – 3

1. Inscribed in Circle – Specifies the radius of a circle on which all vertices of the
polygon lie.

Command: POL
POLYGON Enter number of sides: 6
Specify center of polygon or [Edge]: CLICK ANYPOINT
Enter an option [Inscribed in circle/Circumscribed about circle] <I>: I
Specify radius of circle: 5

2. Circumscribed of Circle – Specifies the distance from the center of the polygon
to the midpoints of the edges of the polygon.

Command: POL
POLYGON Enter number of sides: 6
Specify center of polygon or [Edge]: CLICK ANY POINT
Enter an option [Inscribed in circle/Circumscribed about circle] <I>: C
Specify radius of circle: 5

Ellipse – Creates an ellipse or an elliptical arc.

Command: Ellipse
Keystroke: EL

Ribbon Location: Home > Draw > Ellipse


Result: Creates an ellipse or an elliptical arc.

• The first two points of the ellipse determine the location and length of the first
axis.
• The third point determines the distance between the center of the ellipse and the
end point of the second axis.

Command: ELLIPSE
Specify axis endpoint of ellipse or [Arc/Center]: CLICK POINT1
Specify other endpoint of axis: CLICK POINT2
Specify distance to other axis or [Rotation]: CLICK POINT3

Modify Commands

Move – Allow you to relocate one or more object from the existing position in the
drawing to any other position you specify. After selecting object, you must specify the
“base point” and “second point” of displacement.

Command: Move
Keystroke: MOVE/M

Result: Moves objects a specified distance in a specified direction.

Command: MOVE
Select objects: (select the 2 circles)
Specify base point or [Displacement]: (click center point of circle)
Specify second point or <use first point as displacement>: (click midpoint of the line)

Rotate – Selected object can be rotated to any position with this command. After
selecting object, you must specify the “base point” and “then specify the angle of
rotation”.

Keystroke: ROTATE/RO

Result: Rotates objects around a base point.

Command: ROTATE
Select objects: (select all)
Specify base point: (click point A)
Specify rotation angle or [Copy/Reference]: 45
Trim – To trim object, select the boundaries. Then press ENTER and select the object
that you want to trim. To use all objects as boundaries press, ENTER at the first

Result: Trims objects to meet the edges of other objects.

Command: TRIM
Select objects: (select all)
Select object to trim or shift-select to extend or
[Fence/Crossing/Project/Edge/eRase/Undo]: (select the lines to TRIM)

Extend – To extend object, first select the boundaries. Then press ENTER and select
the object that you want to extend. To use all objects as boundaries, press ENTER at
the first Select Object prompt.

Command: Extend

Result: Extends objects to a selected boundary edge.

Select objects: (click the boundary line)
Select object to extend or shift-select to trim or
[Fence/Crossing/Project/Edge/Undo]: (click line A)
Copy – Commands to duplicate objects by defining a base point or displacement.
With the COPYMODE system, you can control whether multiple copies are created
automatically.

Command: Copy

Result: Copies objects a specified distance in a specified
direction.

Command: COPY
Select objects: (select the 2 circles)
Specify base point or [Displacement/mOde] <Displacement>: (select the center of
the circle)
Specify second point or [Array] <use first point as displacement>: (click to the
corner)

Mirror – You can create object that represent half of a drawing select them and
mirror them across a specified line to create the other half.

Command: Mirror
Keystroke: Mirror/MI

Ribbon Location: Home > Modify > Mirror


Result: Creates a mirrored copy of selected objects.

Command: MIRROR
Select objects: (select the 3 lines)
Specify first point of mirror line: (click the point A)
Specify second point of mirror line: (click the point B)
Erase source objects? [Yes/No]: (enter)

Explode – Explodes a compound object when you want to modify its components
separately. Objects that can be exploded include blocks, polyline, and regions, among
other.

Command: Explode
Keystroke: Explode/X

Result: Breaks a compound object into its component objects.

Offset – You can offset an object at a specified distance or through a point. After you
offset objects, you can trim and extend them as an efficient method to create drawing
containing many parallel lines and curves.

Result: Creates concentric circles, parallel lines, and parallel curves.
Command: OFFSET
Specify offset distance or [Through/Erase/Layer]: 0.1
Select object to offset or [Exit/Undo]: (select rectangle)
Specify point on side to offset or [Exit/Multiple/Undo]: (click inward)
Array – Creates either a rectangular or Polar (circular) pattern of existing objects that
you select. Array copies a duplicate set or object for each “item” on the array.

Result: Creates copies of objects arranged in a pattern.
