• Ingestion may result in nausea, vomiting, and
diarrhea.

Safe Removal of Bulk Ink Cartridge

De-energize the bulk ink system by pushing the Access
Pens button on the Infinity control panel (to move the head
off the parking position) before removing the bulk ink
cartridge (Infinity 85). Failure to comply could result in the
accidental discharge of ink from the bulk ink cartridge.

5
Operating the Infinity GERBERplotter

Basic Concepts
English The Infinity is an easy to use, wide format, inkjet plotter that provides
features such as constant throughput, high reliability, accuracy, and
low operational costs. It is compatible with all GERBER and most
other CAD systems and it offers a Windows based graphical
interface for intuitive control and status messaging.

The quality and performance of the Infinity plotter is dependent on

three things: the inkjet cartridges themselves, how well the plotter is
calibrated, and the alignment of the paper path. Using genuine HP
inkjet cartridges is the best means of ensuring consistent print
quality. If the inkjet cartridge (Infinity 45), or a print head cartridge or
bulk ink cartridge (Infinity 85) is low on ink or has been damaged,
the print quality may suffer.

The output quality of the Infinity plotter is also dependent on how

well it is calibrated. The Infinity plotter comes with two main
procedures for calibration: Inkjet Cartridge Alignment and Plot
Length calibration. The Inkjet Cartridge Alignment compensates for
slight mechanical differences in cartridges and the Plot Length
calibration makes sure that paper is accurately being pulled through
the plotter. These two calibrations should be performed anytime
something on the plotter changes, e.g., new cartridges are installed,
new paper is loaded, or the plotter is moved.

How well the paper flows through the system has an affect both on
the quality of the plot and the consistency of the resulting take-up
roll. Leveling the Infinity plotter is an important aspect of how well
the paper moves through the plotter. If the plotter is not level, the
paper will not feed evenly onto the platen surface and will not wind
consistently onto the paper take-up core. Anytime the plotter is
moved, it should be leveled following the procedure in this manual.

Adherence to GERBER recommendations for preventive

maintenance makes sure that optimum mechanical performance of
your Infinity series plotter is achieved.

1 – Front Cover
The front cover provides access to change inkjet cartridges and to
load paper. The front cover must be in the down position for the
Infinity to plot.

2 – Drive Roll
The drive roll moves at a constant speed and “pulls” the paper
through the plotter.

7
3 – Paper Supply Mandrel
The paper supply mandrel holds the roll of paper that will be used to
plot on. The paper supply mandrel is adjustable so that different
widths of paper may be used.

4 – Paper Take-up Mandrel

After a plot is complete, the Infinity plotter can either drop the plot
English
onto the floor or wind it up onto an unused paper core. The paper
take-up mandrel is driven by a motor and is used to wind the
completed plot onto the paper core.

5 – Bulk Ink Cartridge

This pressurized cartridge holds the ink for the Infinity 85 plotter.
Access Pens must be pushed before removing the bulk ink
cartridge. Failure to comply could result in the discharge of ink from
the pressurized bulk ink cartridge.

14
Leveling the Infinity
Due to the ability of the support columns to bend, the plotter can
stand on an uneven floor and still have all six feet flat on the floor.
With this “out of level” condition, the mandrel and the drive roll will
not be parallel, causing the paper to track quickly to one side.

English
Perform this leveling procedure (Figure 7) with the plotter at its
operating location. Care must be taken not to put any weight on the
plotter throughout this procedure. Front and back mandrels should
be set on the plotter.

1. Loosen the screws on the back panel (Figure 4).

2. Thread the middle feet in on left and right support

columns (positions 2 and 5). This will allow the plotter to
be supported only by all front and rear feet (positions 1,
3, 4, and 6).

15
3. Place the level on top of the two mandrel tubes (Position
B). Do the following during the leveling:
a) Screw left front and rear feet (positions 1 and 3)
out to the floor to level the bubble.

English b) Screw left front and rear feet (positions 1 and 3)

out one half turn to share of the weight of the
plotter.
4. Repeat step 2 with right front and rear feet (positions 4
and 6).
Place a bubble level on the center of the platen (position
A). Adjust the left front and rear feet (positions 1 and 3),
or the right front and rear feet (positions 4 and 6) to bring
the platen level. Do the following during the leveling:
a) Do not allow the left or right middle feet
(positions 2 or 5) to support the plotter

b) Keep the front and rear feet (positions 1, 3, 4

and 6) threaded in as much as possible. For
example, to level the platen, try to lower the
high side rather than raise the low side.
5. Check levelness on positions A, B, and C using a bubble
level.
Note: Changes made to one leveling foot will affect
the overall levelness of the plotter and will
require adjustment.
6. Screw the foot left center and right center feet (positions
2 and 5) out until they barely contact the floor. The
plotter is now leveled.
7. Verify that the mandrels are not bowed by placing the
level across each mandrel, one at a time. If the paper
supply or paper take-up mandrels are bowed, they must
be replaced.
Note: If the plotter is moved after being leveled, it
should be checked and leveled again, as
necessary.

16

4. Hold the syringe (3) higher than the tubing to draw the air
out of the pressure regulator (1) and tubing and into the
syringe, as shown.
5. Draw ink into the syringe slowly and watch for air
bubbling up into the syringe. About 60 ml of ink will be
drawn out of the bulk ink cartridge. Only a small amount
of ink needs to be drawn into the syringe for system
priming. Typical priming rates are 15 to 60 seconds. The
air can be hard to see in the tubing because the ink
covers the inside of the tubing.
Note: If excessive resistance if experienced while
drawing ink into the syringe, push Access Pens two
times. This will cycle the pump and return the head to
the parking station.
6. Disconnect the CPC connector (2) and dispose of waste
ink in an appropriate manner. Refer to the MSDS Safety
Sheets in the manual Appendix for proper disposal
recommendations.
7. Wait approximately 10 minutes.

28
8. Check the tubing for air bubbles that become visible only
after the ink has settled. If a 1 inch or longer bubble of air
is visible, prime the system again.
Note: Some air in the pressure regulator output
tubing is normal.

English
9. Push the CPC connector back into the u-bracket on the
side of the print cartridge. Do this for both print head
cartridges.
