Text Books
• “Digital Signal Processing Principles,
Algorithms & Applications”, John G. Proakis &

3
Signals
• A signal is defined as any physical quantity that varies
with time, space or any other independent variable
or variables

• It always carry some information

4
Analog and digital signals egs

5
System
• A system may be defined as a physical device
that performs an operation on a signal
• Eg. Filter
• System can be linear or nonlinear
• How do you represent a system as an
engineer?

6
System representation
d 2x dx
• Continuous time M 2
+D + kx = F
dt dt
• Or transfer fn or state space model
𝑌(𝑠)
• Transfer function 𝐻 𝑠 =
𝑋(𝑠)

• Discrete time
• Difference equation
• 𝑦 𝑛 = 3𝑦 𝑛 − 1 + 4𝑥 𝑛 − 1 + 5𝑥 𝑛
𝑌(𝑧)
Transfer function 𝐻 𝑧 =
𝑋(𝑧)

7
Basic elements of DSP system

• Advantages
• Flexibility in reconfiguring the digital signal
processing operations by simply changing the pgm

8
Advantages (contd…)
• Accuracy considerations better - tolerances in analog
circuits make it extremely difficult for the system
designer to control the accuracy of the analog signal
processing system
• Digital signals are easily stored in magnetic media
without deterioration or loss of fidelity .
• Also allows implementation of more sophisticated
signal processing algorithms
• Digital implementation cheaper than analogue
counterpart

9
PID Controller- Analog version

10
Applications
• Speech Processing

11
Applications (contd…)
• Today we are able to see live video feed , or
live cctv footage from one continent to
another with just a delay of seconds.
• This field does not only focus on transmission ,
but also on encoding.

12
Applications

13
Applications
• Image sharpening and restoration
• Medical field
• Remote sensing
• Transmission and encoding
• Machine/Robot vision
• Pattern recognition
• Video processing
