1 132kV STRANDED CONDUCTOR OF CURRENT RATING for DEBRA SUBSTATION

1.1 Calculation's principles

This spreadsheet allows the calculation of current rating of stranded conductor. The equations are used for
checking steady-state operation temperature and determination of the end-of-short-circuit temperature.

Temperature in steady-state current must be lower then the maximum allowable temperature in steady-state
condition.
Temperature of the conductor at the end of the short circuit must be lower then the maximum allowable
temperature after short circuit.

1.4.1 Stranded conductor for 132kV

1.4.1.1 For the 132kV transformer 132kV side bay
50000*1.05/132/1.732=229.63A
1.4.1.2 The Ratio of 132kV feeder CT is 300-600/1A
So choose Inominal = 600 A

1.4.2 Data
Intensity of solar radiation Si = 1100 W/m 2
Conductor temperature(70℃) T2 = 343 K
Ambient temperature(30℃) T1 = 303 K
Wind speed (solar radiation 0.1w/cm2) v= 1 m/s
Diameter of sub-conductor D= 0.02682 m
Number of sub-conductor per phase N= 1
Electrical resistance of sub-conductor at 20°C R20° = 7.39E-05 Ohm/m
Mass m= 1.349 kg/m
Emissivity coefficient with respect to black body Ke = 0.6
Solar radiation absorption coefficient γ= 0.5
Temperature coefficient of electrical resistance at 20°C α= 0.0042 °C-1
Rated current of the bay Inominal = 600 A
Stephan-Boltzmann constant s= 5.67E-08 W.m-2.°C-4

Thermal conductivity of the air film in contact with the conductor λ= 0.02585 W. m-1.°C-1

1.4.3 Calculation
In steady-state operation, the equilibrium
Psol + Pj = Pconv + Prad
where,
Solar heat gain by the conductor surface : Psol = γDSi = 29.502
4 4
Heat loss by radiation of the conductor: Prad = SπD Ke (T 2 - T1 )= 1.55E+01
Convection heat loss: Pconv = λNu( T2-T1)Л = 73.94
2
Heat generated by joule effect Pj= RTI

Convection heat loss

Re  1.644*109 * v * D T1  0.5*(T2  T1 )
1.78

Reynolds number = 1506.54

Nusselt number Nu=0.65Re 0.2+0.23Re0.61 = 22.77
1.4.4 Calculate current carrying capacity

I m ax   ( Prad  Pconv  Psol ) / RT 

1/2
= 900.74 A

1.4.5 Conclusion
Calculate current carrying capacity(at 70°C)of ASCR-400/35 is 900.74A
so 900.74 > 600 A

1.4.6 Short-circuit condition

The short-circuit withstand current (Isc) of the cable shall be larger than short-circuit current of
the system. Isc can be calculated based on the formula in case of conductor.

I sc 2 *t
Amin  k= 87.0
k
Isc= 10.00 KA
t= 2.00 s
A= 162.55 mm2
The selected conductor section area is 400mm2,which is more than 162.55mm2, required.
So for 132kV it's suitable
