Ruby Gloom Pattern

I've been using your answers to last weeks Giveaway question to compile a short list of links to
patterns of your favourite cartoon characters. I wasn't able to find a pattern for a few of the
characters, Ruby Gloom being one of them.

www.rubygloomtv.com

Ruby Gloom is a sweet little redhead from a a Canadian children's cartoon. She is  so cute I
thought I'd try to make her myself. Here's the result. I hope you like her and the pattern.

Size
11cm/4.3in tall

Skill Level
Moderate. Ruby is a small doll so she is a little fiddly to make. Her legs require frequent
colour changes - if you're not confident at changing yarn colour, take a look at these tutorials
by June Gilbank and by NeedleNoodles: Colour Changes in Amigurumi, Crocheted Jogless
Stripe.

Note on yarn and hook size

I crochet with a light worsted (DK) weight yarn. You can use a slightly heavier or lighter yarn
as long as you use the same type of yarn for the different colours. This will ensure your toy is
in proportion. Use a hook size that will give you a nice firm stitch. The 3.00mm is my favourite
hook.

Assembly
***These are guidelines only. Be guided by your own eye at all times.***

Join the legs to the body. Use the tail of yarns left on the legs to stitch them to the bottom of
the body (the black section). I recommend pinning them to the body as shown in the photo
but be careful not to hurt yourself on the pins as they may poke through the body.

Join the dress to the body. Slide the dress over the legs and body. You may need to twist it a
bit to get it on. Use the tail of yarn left on the dress to secure it to the body.

Join the arms to the body. Pin the arms so that the tops (the black bits) sit on the collar of the
dress. Stitch on using the tail of yarns left on the arms.

Making and attaching the eyes.

Ruby's eyes are quite detailed and very distinctive (have a look at her picture at the top of the
page). I used felt to make the eyes but some of you might find embroidering the eyes or even
painting/drawing the eyes an easier and better way to do it. Here is an interesting tutorial by
the Amigurumi Girl on how to make eyes using cotton cloth, pencil and sharpie pens. Take
your time and choose the method you're most comfortable with.

First, cut out three circles from your black and white felt.

Glue or stitch the circles together as shown in the picture.

Use white cotton to stitch in three dots on the black section of the eye.

Pin the eyes to the head and then, using black cotton or embroidery floss, stitch the eyes onto
the head. You want the stitches to be visible to match the lines around the cartoon Ruby's
eyes. If you would prefer to avoid stitching, you could glue the eyes to the head then you use
fabric paint to paint in the black stitches around the eyes.

Adding the mouth, eyelashes and eyebrows.

Use black cotton or embroidery floss to stitch in the eyelashes and eyebrows. Again, fabric
paint could be used instead. Use black yarn to stitch in Ruby's mouth.

Join the hair to the head. Pin the hair to the head. Don't worry if the hair covers the eyes and
eyebrows a little bit. The section with the tendrils is pinched so that they flare out from the
side of the head. Stitch to the head using the tail of yarn left on the hair. Use the photos below
as a guide.

That's it! I hope you like your new little Ruby.

The Ruby Gloom character is not my creation so I would ask you not to sell any dolls you
make from this pattern. Thank you!
