Audience Recognition
Audience Recognition
 Knowledge of subject matter- In explicit terms, it’s generally asking on what does your
audience already know and then just branching off from the knowledge already known
to get a broader aspect shown across.
 Writing for future audiences- Readers or Audiences will differentiate due to time, so
keeping an account for future readers will better broaden the aspect of audience
recognition.

Defining Terms for Audiences


 Defining terms parenthetically – Defining simple terms will help your audience achieve
a better understanding such as clarity. Ex: Cash In Advance (CIA)
 Defining your terms in a sentence – If your providing sentence definition, make sure
include the term itself, type and the characteristics.
 Using extended definitions of one or more paragraphs – in addition to the terms, type
and characteristics. You also might want to add and example procedures, and a
description.
 Using a glossary – If terms in general you do not want to place then you can consider a
Glossary which is placed after your conclusion. It’s an alphabetized list of terms.
 Providing pop ups and links with definitions - Links associated with the terms might
deal a great benefit for you audience.

Multiculturalism
 The Global Economy – Global Economies profit more outside of the U.S. than inside
 Cross-cultural Workplace Communication – The Internet is a great way to expand your
horizon for it provides technological advances and a way to communicate at ease with
multi-cultural clients and coworkers.
Guidelines for Effective Multicultural Communication
 Define Acronyms and Abbreviations - shortened forms of words or phrases.
 Avoid Jargon and Idioms – Avoiding such things will help the clarity in such of greater
understanding for Example:
o Ball Park Figure – Eye on the Prize
o Crunch Time – Pull the Plug
o Brownie Points – Jump Through Hoops
 Distinguish Between Nouns and Verbs – Making sure that the reader can tell that
you’re using a noun or a verb
 Watch for Cultural Biased/Expectations – Intent needs to be communicated in
translation. Such as colors which have a different meaning in another country when
talking business.
 Be Careful When Using Slash Marks – Determining on what you say will express a
better concept to the reader because using slash marks can mean two entirely different
things.
 Avoid Humor and Puns – Avoid using Jokes because they can be misinterpreted. If a
Joke is good in the south but not in the north, then how would it be overseas.
 Realize Translation may take more or less Space – The consideration of software
length and screen length needs to be thought through when translation occurs.
 Avoid Figurative Language – Precise wording will be best because in reality figurative
sport images will not sufficiently get the point across
 Be Careful with Numbers, Measurements, Dates, and Times – American Measurement
will not be the same as other country measurements, that is why Metrics gets used
worldwide. That goes the same for Time and Dates
 Use Stylized Graphics to Represent People – It is better to show people about people
in a simple way so there wouldn’t be a conflict and at the same time the meaning will
still be shown across on who you are talking about in general.

Avoiding Biased Language


 Ageist Language – Avoiding references to age will create a negative impact on
people depending on what the readers general age is.
 Biased Language About People with Disabilities – Try to show a better positive
image in people mind so there wouldn’t be a conflict. Disabilities in general is
negative so steer away from it.
 Sexist language – Sexist language is best avoided because a provides a negative
outlook such as discrimination and offensiveness

Audience Involvement
 Personalized Tone – When setting a personal tone for others, it sets sort of a way for
other people to synthesize with you and get a better understanding of what the writer is
try to say.
 Reader Benefit – Motivation is key so always sending an outlook of what the reader will
be befitting from sets a strong stand point of get what you are asking for or just having
the reader understand the point you yourself are trying to get across.
