How To Use a Vacuum Pump

Vacuum pumps are a must for HVAC technicians. It is a tool used to remove moisture and air
from a system before testing for repairs and recharging. You will need to use this more often
than you would think.

Things you’ll need

 Vacuum pump
 Low pressure gauge
 High pressure gauge
 Connecting Hoses

If the vacuum system runs hotter than 200˚F, it is usually caused

by high ambient air temperature, lack of airflow across the heat
exchanger. Ambient air temperature should be below 110˚F!

1. Figure out first if the refrigerant for the system needs to be recharged.
2. Take out your vacuum pump and the extra things that come with it
3. Set the vacuum on even flooring
4. Before you use the pump, make sure that it has clean oil
5. Attach your gauges to the ports
6. The red gauge will connect to the high-pressure port on the inlet fitting
7. The blue gauge will connect to the low pressure on the inlet fitting
8. Open your manifold valves
9. Start your pump
10. Open the intake ports until normal running speed is there
11. Open the side gauge valve, so that the pump could start pulling air out of the system
12. Leave the vacuum and let it run approximately 15 to 30 minutes
13. Close the low side valve and let the vacuum hold for another 15 minutes
14. If it does not hold for that specific amount of time, then the components on the vacuum
pump must be replaced
15. Shut off the pump once you are satisfied for how long the system has held the vacuum
16. Disconnect your vacuum pump
17. Put Vacuum pump away in a safe spot for usage on another time

Generally, this is best done by an HVAC professional. If you are looking to do simple at-home
repairs, learning to use a vacuum pump could be very helpful. A very important piece to
learning the vacuum pump is knowing the correct fitting sizes. More likely when ever you’re
doing anything related with refrigeration or gas, the vacuum pump is your high choice pick to
getting the required job done.
