HEAT MODULATING GAS
FURNACES WORK
What is
Modulated
Heating?
Modulated Heating

• Minimizes energy use

• Produces the right amount of
heat for comfort
• Outstanding efficiency

Up to 98% AFUE Rating

4 good reasons to invest in A modulating furnace. (2019, January 8). https://www.henrysserviceall.com/4-good-

How a Modulating
Gas Furnace Works

• Integrated Furnace Control (IFC)

• Modulating Gas Valve
• Variable Capacity Blower Motor
Let’s look at how these
components work together
Integrated
Furnace Control
•constantly receives information from
the thermostat regarding indoor
temperature.
•determines the most efficient settings
and speeds for the modulating gas
valve and variable-capacity blower
•These Speeds are determined by t-
stat set point(s).

Modulating Gas Valve
• When a call for heat is received from IFC board the
modulating gas valve opens 100 percent.
• This fills the combustion chamber, and the gas is ignited.
• Upon reaching adequate temperature, the t-stat signals the
IFC to reduce flow of gas.
• This flow of gas is based on the actual heating needs inside
your home.
Variable-Speed
Blower Motor

• Precisely regulates the volume of heated

airflow through the duct system.
• As the Modulating Gas Valve heats the
furnace, our motor powers on low speed.
• Motor then slowly ramps up to meet real-
time heating requirements.
• Continuously adjust to real time heating
requirements.
• Use substantially less electricity than
traditional blowers.
How do
Modulating Gas
Furnaces
Compare to
Single and Two
stage Heating?
Advantages of
Modulating Gas
Furnaces
Modulating Gas Valve
Helps the Furnace stick close to target

Newer
temperatures, lowers temperature swing.

Furnace Variable-Speed Blower Motor

Offers continuous airflow for effective air

Features
filtration and comfort. Less noise as well.

Secondary Heat Exchanger

Scavenges heat energy from combustion air which
allows for fuel to be used more efficiently.
Lower
Operatin
g Costs
With AFUE Ratings of up to 98 percent not only do you use less energy, but annual costs are lowered SIGNIFICANTLY!
Improved Overall Comfort

With Variable Speeds and a Modulating Gas valve your house can be kept within 1 degree of desired
thermostats set point.
Improved
Air Quality
•Longer and more consistent run
times allows for your furnaces
filter to capture and remove
airborne pollutants.
Weather Intuition

Modulating Furnaces have the

capability to adjust heating
and fan outputs based of
outside weather.
Disadvantages of a
Modulating Gas
Furnace
Initial Costs
can be
expensive

Average costs for the Furnace and

Installation can be anywhere from
$5,000 to $7,500.
Installation Costs
• You will need an HVAC
Contractor to install Gas
Piping for combustion
air and a drainage for
condensate.
