Dear Student,

It is a pleasure for Linköping University to welcome you to Swedish for Foreign Students – level A1.
Distance course (7,5 credits). It is an A1-level course meaning that after the course you can:

 understand and use simple sentences and common expressions connected to everyday life.
 introduce yourself and answer simple questions about yourself.
 converse in a basic way under the condition that your partner speaks slowly and clearly and
assists you if needed.

If you want to keep your place on the course, please do not forget to accept the place offered
before the date specified by universityadmissions.se. You accept your place via your university
admission account.

The course introduction is scheduled for January 27th (17:00-19:00). The link to the Zoom-room where
the introduction, as well as all future Zoom-sessions, are held can be found in the enclosed timetable.

Please make sure you have purchased the Rivstart books* – the Text- and Exercise book (second
edition) in time for the introduction (ISBN: 9789127434202 & 9789127434219). The books are
available online (adlibris.se, bokus.se, amazon.com etc) as well as in certain regular bookstores.

This is an online course. All the material you need throughout the course (except the Rivstart books and
the audio files), you will find in the Linköping University learning platform Lisam (Lisam.liu.se).
Lisam will be available to you once you have activated your LiU-ID and registered on the course.
More information about how to activate your LiU-ID and register on the course will be sent out
shortly before the course introduction in January.

We meet approximately once a week in a virtual classroom – a Zoom-room. There are eleven Zoom-
sessions (10 chapters + introduction) in total and before each Zoom-session you need to work with the
corresponding Rivstart chapter on your own using a Step-by-Step guide and prepare the assignments
listed in the guide. The Step-by-Step guides as well as all the pre-recorded lectures are available in
Lisam. During the Zoom-sessions, you have a chance to use the Swedish you have learned and to ask
questions.

The Zoom-sessions are not obligatory but there are four obligatory assignments in total (2 written
assignments, 1 short film and 1 verbtest). The dates and times for these assignments are written in the
enclosed timetable. The Zoom-sessions are held on Thursdays. There is a morning session and an
evening session (see timetable). Choose the time that suits you best.

Certain technical criteria need to be met for the Zoom-sessions to work. You need to have:

 a headset with a microphone (preferably a USB headset)

It is not possible to use the internal microphone on your computer as this will result in an echo.
 computer
You need to use a computer in order to see the material the teacher presents on the shared
screen in Zoom and also to be able to cooperate with other students on set tasks. It is not
advisable to participate in the Zoom-sessions via a smart phone or tablet. Read more about how
participate in Zoom-meetings here: https://www.student.liu.se/studentstod/itsupport/zoom-
student/?l=en
 a good internet connection etc
Do a diagnostic test (http://speedtest.net) to check your network bandwidth. Generally, it is
recommended to have a 1.2 to 1.5Mbps upload/download for an optimal experience on desktop
or room systems. If you do not pass this test, you will not be able to participate in the course,
and we ask you to please decline your place.
Go to the Zoom-support page to read more about Zoom: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us
 webcam
Please connect your computer to a webcam so we are able see each other. Most modern laptops
have a webcam built in. If not, one can be bought separately.

More information will be sent to you closer to the course start if you decide to accept your place.
