USED TO
The way we were Molly Hornby was a young girl in the 1960s. Read what she says about it.
“I was a young girl in the 1960s. My friends and I used to do a lot of things which shocked
our parents. We used to do things our mothers never did. We cut our hair, we wore short skirts,
we smoked, and went dancing. We danced to the music of Elvis Presley and the Beatles. We
also got the chance to see the Beatles live at a concert once. It was amazing. My father went
fishing once a week. He always wished that I would accompany him, but fishing was not my
cup of tea. Instead my friends and I went for picnics in the surrounding area quite often. My
boyfriend had a car, a 1960 Ford Falcon, so he always picked us up and we often drove to
Brighton. We went to the pictures twice a week and I loved to watch films with Marlon Brando
and Elizabeth Taylor , especially the ‘Reflections in a Golden Eye’ starring both of them. I still
love to watch this film. It’s my favourite. I can remember it all so clearly.”

BIG BEN
Big Ben is situated in the Elizabeth Tower in the north end of The Houses
of Parliament in Westminster, Central London, next to the river Thames.
Big Ben is actually the name of the huge bell, which weighs more than
13 tons (13,760 kg), but most people use it to refer to the clock and the
tower as well. It is the world’s largest chiming clock with four faces. Each
face is 7 metres in in diameter. The bell is just over 2,13metres/ seven
feet tall and weights about the same as an elephant. When it was cast in 1858, it took two weeks for the
bell to cool down.
Each minute hand on Big Ben is over 12 feet long and it weighs about 220 pounds. / Each minute hand
on Big Ben is 4,2 metres long and it weighs around 100 kilograms. Each hour hand is 2,7 metres long
and it weighs approximately 300 kilograms. The numbers on the clock are 60 centimetres long. The
clock tower was built between 1843 and 1858. Big Ben was probably named after the Commissioner of
Works, Benjamin Hall, who was a very tall man. In June 2012 the clock tower was renamed into
Elizabeth Tower in honour of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee. Elizabeth Tower is 316 feet high
/96 metres high. There are 334 stairs to climb up to the belfry and 399 stairs to the Ayrton Light at the
very top of the tower. Although the public is not allowed inside, there are great views from the nearby
London Eye.
The Burj Khalifa was designed by Adrian Smith, whose firm designed the
Willis Tower and One World Trade Center. Its design is derived from the
Islamic architecture of the region, such as in the Great Mosque of Samarra. A buttressed central core
and wings are used to support the height of the building. This core contains all vertical transportation
with the exception of emergency stairs within each of the wings. It contains a total of 57 elevators and
8 escalators. -35-

Japan’s most famous dog.
In front of the enormous Shibuya train station in Tokyo, there is a life-size
bronze statue of a dog. Even though the statue is very small when
compared to the huge neon signs flashing, it isn't difficult to find. It has
been used as a meeting point since 1934 and today you will find hundreds
of people waiting there for their friends to arrive- just look for the crowds.
Hachiko, an Akita dog, was born in 1923 and brought to Tokyo in 1924. His owner, Professor Eisaburo
Uyeno and he were inseparable friends right from the start. Each day Hachiko would accompany his
owner, a professor at the Imperial University, to Shibuya train station when he left for work. When he
came back, the professor would always find the dog patiently waiting for him. Sadly, the professor died
suddenly at work in 1925 before he could return home.
Although Hachiko was still a young dog, the bond between him and his owner was very strong and he
continued to wait at the station every day. Sometimes, he would stay there for days at a time, though
some believe that he kept returning because of the food he was given by street vendors. He became a
familiar sight to commuters over time. In 1934, a statue of him was put outside the station. In 1935,
Hachiko died at the place he last saw his friend alive.

THE WEDDING FEAST - PART 1
A father one day asked his two daughters, "What is the sweetest thing in the world?"
Her father thought she was making fun of him, but she wouldn't change
her mind. He was so angry that he threw her out of the house, saying, "As you think that salt
is sweeter than sugar you had better find another home where the cooking is more to your
taste."
It was a beautiful summer night, and as the pretty girl sat crying in the forest around her
father's house a young prince, who was lost, heard her voice and came to ask her the way. He
asked her why she was crying and she told him. Then, struck by her beauty and wisdom, he
fell in love with her, and took her home to his beautiful palace and married her.

A TERRIFIC COOK
Do you see how slim I am? It’s not on purpose and it’s not my nature
either; there’s a good reason for me keeping in shape: Mom. She’s a
disaster in the kitchen, and besides being unable to fry an egg
properly, she always causes accidents. I can’t keep track of all the
times the kitchen was on fire (4? 5?) because of something weird she
decided to do, despite of our advice to keep out of the kitchen –
especially the stove.
She doesn’t pay attention to our advice and we have to eat what she
prepares – or at least we eat what we can – so we live constantly on an undesired diet.
The last time she tried to prepare roast beef the result was a burning kitchen; Dad could barely
save the family and extinguish the fire. When she goes to the kitchen we start fearing for our
lives (and stomachs) and thinking of a sickness we’ll fake in order to avoid the “result”.
Despite the bad cook we have at home, our house is always full of guests for lunch and dinner. I
suspect they come just to have fun watching the disasters. And – of course – they want to be
the first to tell our friends what her latest calamity was like
The girl used two strong words to refer to her mom’s accidents in the kitchen. What are they?
Why do you think she has chosen them?
The bride invited her father to the wedding feast, without telling him that she was his daughter. All the
dishes were prepared without salt, and the guests began to murmur.
"Ah," said the bride's father "salt is truly the sweetest thing in the world! But when my daughter said
so I threw her out of my house. If only I could see her again and tell her how sorry I am!"
Drawing the bridal veil from her face, the happy girl went up to her father and kissed him. And
properly salted dishes of fish, flesh, and fowl were then brought in, and all the guests were very happy.
