1 Introduction
These instructions are for machines with a Console serial number beginning with
1887, i.e. of the format 1887-X-XXXX.
The ELE ADR-Auto Range of machines has been developed to satisfy the
requirements for consistent high throughput testing of concrete samples.
The automatic loading cycle is controlled by the closed loop micro-processor/
hydraulic system.
Operation of these machines is straightforward, requiring the operator to depress the
‘RUN’ key, after selecting sample size and loading rate. Standard data for a wide
range of samples i.e. size, type, load rate are programmed into the machine’s
memory.
All control functions and display are built into the hydraulic power pack. The micro-
processor runs a series of self-test routines to check the operation of the system. A
serial output port is built into the system enabling test data stored in memory to be
downloaded to a PC or suitable printer.
Test procedures can be selected and displayed in kN, lbf or kgf engineering units.
Full details of the ADR-Auto console can be found in section 4.
1.1 Compression Frames
All frames have a single acting upstroking ram with overtravel protection to shut the
machine down should maximum platen travel be reached.
The ram/cylinder incorporates a low friction coaxial PTFE seal. An air bleed screw is
fitted at the top of the ram.

2.3 Upper Platen Assemblies (see figure 4)

Some models feature oil filled upper platen assemblies. The oil used is a special type
only obtained from ELE International. The use of any other type of oil will impair
performance.
3 Installation
3.1 Moving, Lifting and Siting
Warning: exercise extreme caution when lifting the machine. Use only approved and
tested equipment. ELE International will accept no responsibility for damage caused
by mishandling.
The ADR-Auto will be delivered in two main parts, are both mounted on pallets and
should remain on the pallets until they have been moved as near as possible to their
final position.
3.1.1 Moving, Lifting and Siting the 250 Compression Frame
To remove from the pallet, unscrew the four bolts (accessed from underneath the
pallet) which secure the pallet to the Compression Frame cabinet. The machine may
then be lifted/moved away from the pallet and placed into position using a fork lift or
hoist and lifting straps under the cabinet.
3.1.2 Moving, Lifting and Siting the 1500 kN, 2000 kN and 3000 kN Compression Frames
To remove the Compression Frame from the pallet, unscrew the four securing bolts,
then lift the Compression Frame away from the pallet
The Compression Frame can be lifted by a fork lift or hoist and lifting straps. The

11 9901X0215 Issue 5
ADR-Auto Range

forks can be positioned under the upper platen after removing the front gate and the
rear screen. A flat piece of wood must be placed on the forks to prevent damage to
the upper platen.
The 2000/3000 BS Compression Frames are also supplied with two “Dynamo”
eyebolts which, if not supplied already fitted, can be screwed in the top of the frame
through the large holes in the top cover.
Note: The eyebolts supplied are “Dynamo” eyebolts to BS4278 which are
intended for direct lifting only. A spreader beam or spreader frame must
always be used.
3.1.3 Moving, Lifting and Siting the Console
Lift/move away from the pallet and place into position using a fork lift or hoist and
lifting straps under the cabinet.
3.2 Connecting the Compression Frame to the Console
3.2.1 Connecting the Hydraulics.
Connect the outlet of the Console (at the rear) to the inlet of the Compression frame
(at the rear) with the flexible hydraulic hose supplied, ensuring that all connections
are fully tightened.
Note: if a Flexural Frame is to be connected, then this should be connected to the
upper outlet on the Console. The Compression Frame should be connected to the
lower outlet on the Console. In most cases, it is the frame with the highest capacity
that is connected to the lower outlet.
3.2.2 Connecting the Ram Travel Limit Switch.
For details please refer to section 4.18.2.
3.2.3 Connecting to the Mains Supply
For details, please refer to section 4.4.
3.3 Preparing the Hydraulics (see figure 3)
The hydraulic reservoir in the Console is normally full when the machine is delivered.
If the reservoir is empty on delivery, the oil will be supplied in containers.
3.3.1 Checking the Oil Level (see figure 3)
To check the oil level, remove the door from the Console by unscrewing the four
retaining screws and then unscrew the oil filler plug. The level of the oil should be at
the bottom of the thread in the filler elbow.
If oil is required, use only the grade as specified in section 2.
3.3.2 Bleeding the Hydraulic System (see figures 1 and 3)
The hydraulic ram is provided with a bleed screw. This is used to release any air
from the hydraulic system after installation or after an oil change. To open or close
the bleed screw requires the use of a 5 mm AF hexagon wrench (supplied with the
machine).
Important: the bleed screw captivates a steel ball. Do not completely remove
the bleed screw as this may cause the ball to become lost.
The bleed screw on the ADR-Auto 1500/2000 and 3000 Compression Frame is
accessible after removing the lower platen (and any distance pieces).

12 9901X0215 Issue 5
ADR-Auto Range

The bleed screw on the ADR-Auto 250 Compression Frame is accessible after lifting
off the lower platen (and any distance pieces), unscrewing the 4 screws now visible
and then removing the ram extension.
The bleed screw on the 25 kN Frame is accessible after unscrewing the grub screw in
the side of the ram extension and then by removing the ram extension together with
the fixed lower platen still attached to it.
3.3.2.1 Operate the Console (refer to section 4) to provide a flow of oil to the Compression
Frame and unscrew the bleed screw no more than four turns. Air and oil will escape
from the bleed screw. When the oil is free from air bubbles, close the bleed screw
and tighten firmly. The hydraulic ram should now rise.
Note: If the Compression Frame has a front gate with safety interlock, this must
be closed before the console pump will operate.
3.3.2.2 If an additional loading frame or Flexural Frame is fitted then repeat 3.3.2.1 but using
the bleed screw on the other Frame.
3.3.2.3 Note: remember to change the operating mode (refer to section 4.6.1) when bleeding
additional frames.
3.4 Distance Pieces
Since the maximum platen travel on a 1500, 2000 and 3000 kN Compression Frame
is 50 mm, the vertical clearance between the upper and lower platen should be
adjusted using distance pieces, according to the specimen being tested. The
distance pieces are located on the ram spigot and then the lower platen is placed on
top of the distance pieces, located by the spigot.
Ensure that all mating surfaces between the ram, distance piece(s) and platen are
free from concrete debris etc. before assembling these items.
These machines are supplied with a 20 mm distance piece ready for testing 300 x
150 mm diameter cylinders.
Note: the distance pieces must NOT be used on top of the platen.

described below.
4.6.2.1 Display Units
The display units selected define the units in which the load is displayed, and which
units are used for pace rate, sample dimensions, sample weight and sample density.
The following table shows the available section.

Units Load Pace Dimensions Weight Density Stress

SI kN kN/sec mm g kg/m³ N/mm2
Imperial lbf lbf/sec ins lb lbf/ft³ lbs/in2
Metric kgf kgf/sec cm g g/cm³ kgs/cm2

Use the Left or Right Arrows to select the units required. When entering sample
data, use the dimension and weight information units selected from the above table.
4.6.2.2 Pace Control Mode
The ADR-Auto can control the pace rate in several ways as follows:
Automatic
The ADR-Auto controls the pace rate automatically at the rate set. The automatic
pace control operates from zero load until the sample fails. The load is then
automatically removed and the peak load measurement held.

18 9901X0215 Issue 5
ADR-Auto Range

Manual
The pace rate is controlled from the keyboard, or from an external manual control.
When the sample fails, the load is automatically removed and the peak load
measurement held.
Board
Board mode control is intended for use when testing blocks with fibre board capping.
Maximum load is applied at the start of the test to compress the fibre board and the
ADR-Auto does not control the pace rate. When the average pace rate measured
over the previous 1 second is 90% of the set rate, the ADR-Auto then starts to control
the pace rate. The point at which the ADR-Auto starts to control the pace rate will
depend on the type of fibre board being used.
Use the Left or Right Arrow keys to select the required pace control mode.
4.6.2.3 Automatic Sample Log
The ADR-Auto can hold up to 500 individual test result records. These records can
be examined, printed or downloaded via the ADR-Auto’s serial link to a computer.
When the memory is full, the oldest records are overwritten by the newest records so
that the memory always holds the latest data.
To configure the ADR-Auto to log the test results to memory, use the Left or Right
Arrow keys to select On.
4.6.2.4 Automatic Sample Print
The ADR-Auto can be configured to print out the test results at the end of each test
cycle. If this facility is required, use the Left or Right Arrow keys to select On. Note
that if the Automatic Print facility is On, the record is printed when the ADR-Auto is
switched back to the Initial Display screen, prior to starting a new test.
4.6.2.5 Automatic Load Tare
The ADR-Auto can be configured to automatically zero or “tare” the effects of the
ram, platen and sample weights as the ram approaches the top platen. This is
sometimes referred to as “closing daylight”. Using the Left or Right Arrow keys,
select On if the automatic tare facility is required, or Off if not. Note that if Off is
selected, the load will have to be manually tared at the start of the test.
4.6.2.6 Auto-Increment Reference
The ADR-Auto can be configured to automatically increment the sample reference
field upon test completion. At the end of a test, when the reset button is pressed, any
numbers present on the end of the reference field value will be incremented ready for
the next test. If auto-increment is required, use the Left or Right Arrow keys to set
the option to On.
4.6.2.7 Dual Pace Rate
The ADR-Auto can be configured for dual pace rates. In dual rate mode, the ADR-
Auto will control the pace rate at the first entered rate until a set load value is
reached, and then continue pacing at the second rate. This option applies to the
1000, 1500, 2000,2225 and 3000 kN compression frames. If dual rates are required,
use the Left or Right Arrow keys to set the option to On. Note that there are default
pace rate values which are set when the sample type is selected. This can be
changed if required. See section 4.7.1.

19 9901X0215 Issue 5
ADR-Auto Range

4.6.2.8 Failure Threshold

The definition of the Failure Threshold parameter depends on the form of pace
control selected, and if either the ACV (Aggregate Crushing Value) or TFV (Ten
Percent Fines Value) sample test modes have been selected. The parameter is
always entered as a load in the units defined for display. The following describes
each form of pace control and how the Failure Threshold is used.
Automatic
When automatic pace control is selected, the Failure Threshold parameter defines
the load at which the ADR-Auto starts looking for a failure. The machine ignores any
failures below this level and continues to apply load and control the pace rate. The
default setting is a percentage of the frame range, i.e. 8 kN for a 2000 kN load frame.
The actual percentage depends on the frame type. The threshold should be
increased if the sample under test can exhibit a false failure early on in the loading
cycle, as can happen when testing bricks capped with plywood.
If an ACV or TFV test has been selected when selecting the sample type, the Failure
Threshold has the same meaning, i.e. failures are not detected below the threshold
value, but in these two cases, the ADR-Auto stops pacing when the load attains the
level set in the Failure Threshold parameter. Note that the ADR-Auto sets a default
pace rate and threshold for ACV tests, but these must be user entered for TFV tests.
Manual
The same as automatic pace control.
Board
When Board pace control is selected, the Failure Threshold is automatically
determined by the ADR-Auto. Any value entered is ignored in Board control mode.
To update the Failure Threshold displayed, enter a new load using the numeric
keypad and then press the Enter key. If the Enter key is not pressed, the value will
not be updated. Use the Clear key to erase the entire entry.
4.6.2.9 Failure Detection (%)
The ADR-Auto detects a sample failure by measuring the peak load sustained by the
sample and waiting until the load has fallen by a defined percentage of this peak load.
Use the numeric keypad to change the default value. Increasing the percentage
means that the ADR-Auto continues to try to maintain the loading rate for a longer
time as the sample fails.
4.6.2.10 Zero Suppression Range
The ADR-Auto displays a load value of zero until the load exceeds the value in the
Zero Suppression Range entry. Use the numeric keypad to change the default value.
Set the value to zero if this facility is not required.
4.6.3 Selecting the Sample Type and Size
Having selected the operating mode and setup any options required for the mode, the
sample type and size should be selected. The ADR-Auto has a large database of
predefined sample types and sizes, and Appendix 1 lists those available along with
their associated pace rates. If the sample under test is not in the database, the
required pace rate and sample dimensions can be entered before the test is run.
Note that because the number of sizes and dimensions depend on the display
units selected, the display units (eg. kN) must be selected prior to choosing the
sample type and size.

_Weight in Air_ 2345

Weight in Water 1234
Sample Density 2111

Note that the up arrow in the top right hand corner of the screen. This indicates there
is a previous screen.
The ADR-Auto will calculate the sample’s density from its weight in water and air. If
this facility is required, enter the sample’s air and water weights in the respective
fields. Otherwise enter the sample’s density in the Sample Density field. Use the
Escape key to return to the Initial Screen.
Note that the sample details can also be updated after a test has been completed.
4.7.2.1 Type and Shape
The sample type shown is the one selected and is for information only and cannot be
altered here. If it is wrong it must be changed in the Select Sample screen under the
menu key. Note that for some sample types, an additional line is shown describing
the sample shape. Thus if a Paving Block Type R has been selected, the sample
shape will be shown as Plain or Chamfered.
4.7.2.2 Reference
If the sample reference is not correct or has not been entered already, it can be
added here.

24 9901X0215 Issue 5
ADR-Auto Range

4.7.2.3 Dimensions
If the sample dimensions required are not the standard ones chosen when selecting
the sample type and size, they can be altered here. Select the required entry field
and use numeric keypad to enter the new dimensions. These new dimensions are
held by the ADR-Auto until a new sample type is selected. Remember to press the
Enter key for the new value to be entered. The sample dimensions are used by the
ADR-Auto when it calculates stress.
Note that the number and descriptions of the dimensions fields will depend on the
sample type selected.
Thus when a Type S paving block sample type is selected, a Plan Area value must
be entered instead of the normal length and width as Type S paving blocks are of an
irregular shape.
For Type R and S Paving Blocks there is a Factor value shown which is used in the
stress calculation for the blocks. This can be altered if required. For details of its
use, see Appendix 3.
If the sample selected is a Beam, a Separation dimension is shown. This dimension
is the roller separation, and is used in the stress calculation for beams. This can be
altered if required. See Appendix 3 for details of its use.
4.7.2.4 Sample Density
The ADR-Auto will calculate the sample’s density from its weight in water and air. If
this facility is required, enter the sample’s air and water weights in the respective
fields. Otherwise enter the sample’s density in the Sample Density field. Use the
Escape key to return to the Initial Screen.
4.7.3 Starting Pacing
Once the ADR-Auto has been setup, it is ready to test a sample. Place the sample in
the load frame, leaving 5 to 10 mm of clearance between the sample and the top
platen. When ready press the Run key. The screen display will now switch to the
large character test screen and be of the form –

____ADRAuto 2000 Pace kN/s +6.80___

-
+0.2 +

At this point the ADR-Auto’s main pump will turn on and the ram start to rise. The first
line on the screen shows the set pace rate, and the second line the load on the
sample.
The lowest line on the screen is the pace rate error bar display, which shows the
difference between the required rate and the rate achieved by the ADR-auto.
4.7.4 Automatic or Manual Load Tare
If the automatic tare facility has been turned on, the ADR-Auto will tare the load as
the ram rises. If the machine has not been configured to automatically tare the load,
press the Reset key just before contact is made between the sample and the upper
platen. Once the machine is under load, pressing the Reset key has no affect.

25 9901X0215 Issue 5
ADR-Auto Range

Note than even when the automatic tare option is turned on, the manual tare function
is still operational.
4.7.5 Pacing Control
The ADR-Auto has three ways of controlling pace, Automatic, Manual and Board.
(The correct one of these must have been selected when setting the options in the
Setup Mode screen). The selected option comes into effect once the ADR-Auto has
closed the gap between the sample and the upper platen, and has detected an
increase in load on the sample.
4.7.5.1 Automatic
Once the ADR-Auto detects that the sample is being loaded, it turns on the pace
control system. At the start of the loading cycle, the pace error bar will show an error
but this will soon stabilise as the automatic pacer takes over.
4.7.5.2 Manual
Once the ADR-Auto detects the sample is being loaded, the pace rate must be
controlled manually. This can be done from the keyboard using the Left and Right
Arrow keys. One press of either key increases or decreases the rate at which the
load is being applied.
4.7.5.3 Board
Once the ADR-Auto detects a load on the sample, it applies loads as fast as possible
to compress the board on either side of the sample. This continues until the average
pace rate measured over the previous 1 second is 90% of the set rate. The pace
control system is then turned on.
4.7.6 Pace Error Bar Display
When the ADR-Auto is loading the sample, the error display takes the form of a bar
running from the central line to either the plus or minus signs. The length and
direction of the bar is proportional to the pace error and a full scale deflection is equal
to a ± 15% error in the pace rate.
4.7.7 Altering the Pace Rate whilst the Test is Running
The pace rate (or pace rates and transition load if dual rates have been selected) can
be changed at any time while the sample is being loaded. Press the Pace key and
enter the new values. The new values take effect when the Escape key is pressed to
return to the test screen. Note that the pace bar display will show an error until the
ADR-Auto is pacing at the new rate.
4.7.8 Pausing the Test
If the ADR-Auto is controlling the pace rate (in Automatic or Board pace control
modes) the test can be paused at any time by pressing the Pause key and the ADR-
Auto will hold the load constant. Press the Run key to resume loading at the set
pace rate.
4.7.9 Overload Conditions
If the load reaches the frame limit before the sample fails, the message “Warning –
Overload” will flash on and off on the screen, and the ADR-Auto will release the load.
Press the Reset key to return to the Initial Screen. Under these conditions sample
data record is not recorded or printed.

4.7.10 Ram Runout Conditions

If the Run key is pressed, and no sample is present in the frame, the ram will
continue to rise until the ram runout switch is tripped. This will cause the pump to
stop and the dump valve to operate. Press the Stop and then the Reset keys to
return to the Initial Screen.
4.7.11 Stopping the Test Manually
The test can be stopped at any time by pressing the Stop key. The ADR-Auto treats
this as a normal sample failure as described in 4.7.12.
4.7.12 Sample Failure
While the sample is being loaded, the ADR-Auto is continually comparing the current
load on the sample with the peak load seen by the sample. When the current load is
below the peak load by the percentage set when setting up the ADR-Auto (the default
setting is 15%), the machine senses this as a failure, switches off the pump and
dumps the load. The screen will then switch to show the sample failure details and
will be of the form –

_________Sample Failure Results_________

Maximum Load 1045
Stress 134.4
Pace Rate 6.80
Density 350

Note that the stress value is not calculated for all sample types. See Appendix 3 for
the stress calculations performed by the ADR-Auto.
To prepare the ADR-Auto for the next sample, press the Reset key to return to the
Initial Screen. At this point, if the options have been configured, the ADR-Auto will
print out the test results and record the results in the memory. Note that if necessary
the sample details can be updated before the Reset key is pressed by pressing the
Sample key and editing the details as required. The stress and density values will
reflect any changes made to the sample’s dimensions or air and water weights.
4.7.13 Printing the Test Results (see section 4.11 for the printer configuration)
The test results can be printed during the Sample Failure Details screen display by
pressing the Print key. If the printer is not connected or does not respond, the ADR-
auto will display the message –
Printer Busy. Retry? – No
on the bottom line of the screen. Use the Left or Right Arrow keys to select Yes or
No and press the Enter key. The format of the printout will depend on the sample
type selected. See Appendix 4 for printout formats.
4.8 ACV and TFV Tests
The way the ADR-Auto controls the loading of the sample is different when the
sample has been chosen for an Aggregate Crushing or Ten Percent Fines Value test.
Provided that the automatic form of pace control has been selected, the machine will
control the loading of the sample at the entered pace rate until the load specified in
the Failure Threshold parameter is reached, at which point the load is dumped, and
the peak load displayed.

27 9901X0215 Issue 5
ADR-Auto Range

The ADR-Auto does not look for a sample failure when testing ACV or TFV sample
types.
Note that when an ACV sample type is selected, the ADR-Auto automatically sets
default values of 0.66kN/sec for the pace rate, and 400kN for the threshold, so that
the compression cycle lasts 10 minutes and ceases when a load of 400kN is reached.
If required, edit the pace rate and threshold values.
The ADR-Auto does not set default pace rate and threshold when a TFV sample type
is selected and the pace rate and threshold must be user entered.
4.9 Recorded Test Results
The ADR-Auto can store up to 500 individual test results. When the memory is full,
the oldest records are overwritten by the newest records so that the memory always
holds the latest data. The records can be viewed or printed by pressing the view or
print key while in the Initial Screen.
4.9.1 Printing the Current Test Result
The test results can be printed from the Sample Failed or Initial Screens by pressing
the Print key. If the printer is not connected or does not respond, the ADR Auto will
display the message –
Printer Error. Retry? – Yes
in a window on the screen. Check that the printer is connected to the serial port and
is “on line” or “selected” (refer to your printer manual). Use the Left or Right Arrow
keys to select Yes or No and press the Enter key. If a further printer error occurs,
check that the serial port settings agree with those set in the printer (see section
4.16.2). The format of the printout will depend on the sample type selected. See
Appendix 4 for printout formats.

cadmium battery which is continually charged while the ADR-Auto is turned on. This
will preserve the contents of the memory, and maintain the internal clock for up to 3
months when there is no system power present. If the power has been off for a long
period, it is advisable to turn on the ADR-Auto for at least 24 hours to recharge the
battery. This does not affect the calibration and configuration data as described in
the next section.
4.14.2 Configuration Data
All calibration and configuration data is held in non-volatile memory, and cannot be
lost under normal conditions. All changes to the configuration are stored as they are
made.
4.15 Error Conditions and Messages
The ADR-Auto continually checks critical performance parameters, and displays an
error message if a malfunction is detected. The fault must be corrected for operation
to continue. Call the service engineer or consult the service manual.

The word format can either be 8 bits, no parity and 1 stop bit (8b 1s) or 8 bits, no
parity and 2 stop bits (8b 2s).
4.16.2.3 Terminator
The Terminator setting defines what the ADR-Auto adds at the end of a line. These
are Carriage Return only (CR), Carriage Return followed by a Line Feed (CR/LF),
Line Feed only (LF), and Line Feed followed by a Carriage Return (LF/CR).
4.17 Plotter Interface
The ADR-Auto has an analog output which is proportional to the load on the sample.
The output is scaled so that 0 to 5 volts is equal to zero load to the maximum load for
the load frame being used. Thus for a 2000kN frame 0 to 5 volts corresponds to 0 to
2000kN.
The output voltage scale can be changed from the Test Y/t Output menu. To obtain a
plot, connect the Y/t output to a plotter. A plot can only be produced while a test is
being performed (i.e. in real-time).

Appendix 3 – Stress Calculations

The ADR-Auto calculates stress as follows –
Cube, Cylinder/Core, Cylinder/Tensile, Brick, Block – Peak Load/Sample Area.
Beam – The stress for all sample types except the 40 x 40.1 x 160 beam is calculated using
the following formula –
Stress = (Peak Load x Roller Separation)/ (Width x Depth x Depth)
The calculation for the 40 x 40.1 x 160 beam is
Stress = (1.5 x Peak Load x Roller Separation)/(Depth x Depth x Depth)
Stress is not calculated for Flags, Kerbs and Channels.
Type R and S Blocks – Stress is calculated as peak load/plan area multiplied by a correction
factor which depends on the sample thickness and shape as follows –

Thickness and Shape Correction Factor

Appendix 5: Remote Commands

The contents of the ADR-Auto’s test data memory or current test data can be downloaded
using the serial RS232 communications interface. All the commands are sent as a series of
ASCII characters terminated by a Carriage Return. This Appendix describes the commands
and how to use them.
Command Format
All commands sent to the ADR-Auto take the form of a keyword followed by one or more
optional parameters separated by spaces and terminated by a Carriage Return. In this
manual the keyword is shown in capitals followed by the parameter list thus
KEYWORD <parameter 1> <parameter 2> … <parameter n>
Data Format
All the data transmitted by the ADR-Auto in response to a command is in the form of a
sequence of ASCII characters, terminated by Carriage Return (CR) character preceded by
either an End of Text (EOT) or an End of Transmission (ETX) character. Depending on the
nature of the command received, the ADR-Auto will respond by transmitting one or more
sequences of characters. EOT/CR is used to terminate each data line except the last when
ETX/CR is used. Individual parameters in each data set are separated by a Space
character.
The ADR-Auto always sends a reply to a command to acknowledge that the command has
been received and processed. The reply will consist of an error message if the command
cannot be interpreted, or the information requested by the command. Those commands
which do not return any data, such as CLEAR send back the command received message
consisting of a colon (:), followed by ETX/CR.
Communicating with the ADR-Auto
Once a command has been sent to the ADR-Auto, the host system must wait for a reply
before sending further commands. The ADR-Auto will not send a reply until it has processed
the command and is ready to accept a further command. This command – reply sequence
must be observed at all times to ensure that no data is lost.
Initialising the ADR-Auto
The ADR-Auto has two commands for initialising the system, one for setting and checking
the ADR-Auto’s internal clock, and the other for clearing the sample test data memory.

The CLEAR Command

Clears the ADR-Auto’s data memory and resets the recall pointers.
Syntax
CLEAR
Parameters
None

The TIME Command

Used to set or examine the ADR-Auto’s time setting.
Syntax
TIME <day> <month> <year> <hour> <minute> <second>

41 9901X0215 Issue 5
ADR-Auto Range

Parameters
Day 1 – 31
Month 1 – 12
Year 1999 – 2058
Hour 0 – 23
Minute 0 – 59
Second 0 – 59

Note: only 91 – 99 or 0 – 58 need be specified for the year values. The full value is always
returned by the ADR-Auto.
Returns
The command sent with no parameters returns the current time.

Test Data Retrieval

Test data can be retrieved at any time and does not interfere with the recording process.

The RECALL Command

Used to recall data from the ADR-Auto’s memory. With the parameters set to zero, the
current sample test data is returned. If sent without a parameter, one memory record is
retrieved and the ADR-Auto’s internal recall pointer is automatically moved to the next
record. Alternatively the set recall point parameter can be sent.
Syntax
RECALL
Parameters
Either no parameter or a zero.
Returns
Recalls a single record. If no parameter is sent, data in memory from the current recall point
is returned and the recall pointer is incremented to the next record. If ‘RECALL 0’ is sent, the
ADR-Auto returns the test data for the current sample. If ‘RECALL n’ is sent, the ADR-Auto
returns the number of records currently in the data memory.
Syntax
RECALL <set recall point>
RECALL n
Parameters
Set Recall Point

42 9901X0215 Issue 5
ADR-Auto Range

The Recall Point sets the position of the recall pointer. When specified as date and time, it
sets the time from which the data is to be recalled. If no record has the exact time value, the
pointer is set to the nearest point available. Set point options are as follows −
-- sets recall point to the start of the memory.
++ sets recall point to the end of the memory.
+ Moves the recall pointer on by 1 record.
- Moves the recall pointer back by 1 record.

Returns
None.

Error Codes
If the ADR-Auto cannot interpret a command it will reply with an integer error code. All error
codes are preceded by a colon.
: Command accepted
:1 null command string
:2 Parameter exceeds maximum length allowed
:3 Command ambiguous
:4 Command invalid
:5 Incorrect number of parameters
:6 Command does not take parameters
:7 Parameter value out of range
:10 Invalid time
:11 Record empty

5 Maintenance
5.1 Daily
Always check that the platens are clean before commencing the test.
Remove the lower platen and distance pieces and clean thoroughly.
Brush away all concrete debris from the area around the hydraulic ram. In the case
of 2000 kN and 3000 kN BS machines, raising the hydraulic ram will assist in the
removal of this debris etc. from between the folds of the gaiter.
Check for signs of leaks in the hydraulic system.
5.2 Occasionally
Inspect gaiters for damage.
Check the oil level in the oil reservoir.
Inspect the platen for wear.
Check the oil in the reservoir for signs of contamination and replace if necessary.
Due to the design of the seal, a small amount of oil may ‘seep’ out of the ram. This is
not a problem and should be wiped away as necessary.
5.3 Verification
It is normal National Standard requirements to request the verification of load
measuring systems at least once each year or more frequently according to the work
undertaken.
A verification should be undertaken after each occasion when any adjustment to the
compression machine may have affected the load measuring system.
The verification of the load measuring system should be undertaken by qualified
engineers using approved equipment.
Note: always use a load spreader of approximately 150 mm diameter or more when
calibrating machines to 3000 kN.
6 Service and Spares
It is recommended that either the ELE Service Department or an authorised
distributor be contacted for details of available spare parts or servicing requirements.
7 Rectangular Platen Handling Assemblies
7.1 Introduction
Unique platen handling systems enabling the upper platen to be quickly moved to
provide access to, and use of the ball seating. Particularly useful where cube testing
to BS 1881 is specified, the facility does not affect the stability requirements of the
ball seating.
All BS Compression Machines of 2000 and 3000 kN capacity can be supplied fitted
with the above assemblies.

For other details see specifications of load frame to which the Rectangular Platen
Handling Assembly is fitted.
7.3 Installation
7.3.1 General
As supplied, the load frame will not have the rectangular platens fitted.
Before fitting the platens ensure that the load frame is level in both directions.
The upper platen is best fitted from the rear of the load frame and this should be
taken into account when installing the frame.
7.3.2 Lower platen
Remove the 4 blanking plugs from the ends of the lower platen and screw in the 4
lifting rods. (The lower platen is the one without the rollers).
Open the load frame front gate.
Ensure the lower platen is the correct way up i.e. engraved lines at the top, then with
the aid of an assistant and exercising extreme care, lift the platen onto the ram or
distance pieces (see 7.4.1) ensuring its correct location.
Remove the 4 lifting rods from the platen and replace the blanking plugs.
7.3.3 Upper Platen
Remove the 4 blanking plugs from the ends of the upper platen and screw in the 4
lifting rods. (The upper platen is fitted with rollers).
Remove the 2 rear stops (figure 7.1) from the handling assembly.
Ensure the upper platen is the correct way up i.e. surface with recess at the top, then
with the aid of an assistant and exercising extreme care, lift the platen and position it
between the protruding rails (at the rear of the load frame) with the rollers resting on
the top face of the rails (figure 7.1).
Refit the 2 rear stops.
Remove the 4 lifting rods from the platen and replace the blanking plugs.
Ensure the platen rolls freely along the rails.
Note: a latch is provided on 3000 kN machines (see figures 7.1 and 7.2) to keep the
platen at the rear of the load frame and clear of the ball seating during cube testing.
On 2000 kN machines, a depression in the guide rails locates the transport rollers to
keep the platen at the rear of the load frame.

ADR-Auto Range

7.4 Operation
7.4.1 Block Testing
The maximum vertical clearance of 245 mm for block testing is achieved by locating
the lower rectangular platen directly on the load frame ram (see figure 7.2).
When testing blocks requiring less vertical clearance, the required distance pieces
should be bolted to the ram and the platen located on the top distance piece (see
figure 7.3).
7.4.2 Cube Testing
100 mm and 150 mm cubes may be tested with the lower rectangular platen located
directly on the load frame ram and the upper platen rolled to its rearmost position and
retained either by the latch (3000 kN machines) or by seating the transport rollers into
the depression in the guide rails.
Correct vertical clearance is obtained by fitting the adaptor into the central hole in the
lower rectangular platen then locating the required distance pieces onto the lower
rectangular platen, topped by the Self-centring Lower Platen. For testing 100 mm
cubes 1 x 80 mm and 1 x 100 mm distance pieces are required. For testing 150 mm
cubes 1 x 80 mm and 1 x 50 mm distance pieces are required. (see figure 7.4)
7.5 Maintenance
Keep the rectangular platen handling assembly rails clean and ensure that the upper
rectangular platen rolls freely along the rails.
