 DPM 2 (Solutions)

C to E

C. RC Passage

No of words - 380

1. The passage states that the bankers ‘fixed’ the LIBOR, and when this was found out it exposed the self centred
structure of financial markets. This idea is expressed in choice (C) . (A) is not appropriate - in telling us that
institutions ‘colluded’, the author implies that they were engaging in something they should not have been doing. (B)
is not relevant as there is no discussion of the quantum or proportion of profit made. D is not referred to in the
passage.
Therefore , choice (C) . Choice (C)

2. ( A) though true, needs to be connected to the question. (B) is also true, but it does not address the question.
Socialization refers to the way the financial sector bailouts were accomplished through the use of public funds. The
passage mentions “Goverment bailouts’ in the second paragraph, presumably to save society, so (C) is the
appropriate.
Thus Choice (C) is correct. Choice (C)

3. Towards the end of the second paragraph the passage states that “helped by cheap money”, the “financial sector
has pushed ahead with…...instruments that contributed to the (financial) crisis” , so (A) is justified. Choice (B) and (C)
are incorrect. ‘Witnessed exponential growth’ in (D) is incorrect even though it has been mentioned that the
Derivatives market has continued to grow (Refer penultimate sentence of the passage.
Thus (A) is correct. Choice (A)

4. The last sentence of first paragraph of the passage state that the “mystique” conceals “ imperfection and asymmetrical
opportunities (undue profit)” in financial market.

THus choice (D) is correct. Choice (D)

Q6. Option (A)
Q7. Option (D)
Q8. -19
Q9. 96
Q10. Option (B)

Solution-1:
Let the number be abc.
Given abc = 10(a+b+c) + 45
100 a + 10b + c= 10a + 10b + 10c + 45
90a = 9c + 45
10 a = c + 5
a = 1, c = 5

Option (B)

Solution 2:
Let Bihari’s speed be b kmph
Then Atal’s speed = kmph
Since they meet at 8:00 p.m., Atal travels for 14 hours and Bihari for 9 hours.

b=8
Atal’s speed = 12 kmph, Bihari’s speed = 8 kmph.
To cover 240 km Atal’s needs = 240/ 12 or 20 hours. He will reach his destination at 2:00 a.m. the next
day.
Option (B)

Solution-3:

The time and the relative rates (LCM of times (60) divided by time) of the 4 belts are tabulated below:
Conveyor Belts A B C D ABCD
Time( in minutes) 10 15 20 30 12
Rate 6 4 3 2 5

As the net rate to be 5 units/min, A and B are filling belts and C, D are the emptying one.
(6+4) – (3+2) = 5
Option (D)

Solution-4:
Let the filling capacities of X, Y and Z be 2x litres/ hr, 3x litres/ hr and 4x litres/ hr respectively. Let the
volume of the tank be V litres.

V = 12x
In the first hour, 3x litres will be filled. In the second hour, x litres will be filled. In the third hour, 5x litres
will be filled.
9x litres, will be filled in the first 3 hours. Another 3x litres will be filled in the next hour.
tank will be full in 4 hours.
Ans: (4)

Solution-5:
Quantity taken out = (0.4) (2) litres = 0.8 litres
Remaining quantity = 1.2 litres
Given that the ratio of milk and water = 5:1
Quantity of milk = 1 litre and quantity of water = 0.2 litres
In order to reverse the ratio, 4.8 litres of water must be added.
x = 4.8
New quantity of milk = 1 litre and New quantity of water = 5 litres
In order to again reverse the ratio, 24 litres of milk must be added.

y = 24
and x + y = 28.8

Solution-6:
Given seven-digit number = 6a5b4c8.
As it is divisible by 72, 4c8 should be divisible by 8.
If c = 0, 4 and 8, then 4c8, is divisible by 8.
Given that a+b 5
a+b can be either 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 or 0.
(i) If c = 0, a+b =4 ( to be divisible by 9)
(ii) If c = 4 , a+b = 0( to be divisible by 9)
(iii) if c=8, a+b=5( to be divisible by 9)
The maximum value of
Option (A)

Solution-7:
The side of small cube= 1 cm. When corner cubes are removed, the big cube loses 3 faces (of small cube)
at each corner. However 3 new, faces of small cubes previously hidden are now exposed. Hence, there is
no change in the total surface area of the big cube.
Option (D)
Solution-8:
………(1)

Greatest negative value of x for which (1) holds is - 19, i.e. m = -19

Solution 9:
‘b’ and ‘c’ are consecutive multiples of the HCF. Let b, c be 24q and 24(q+1)
The three numbers are 24, 24q, 24(q+1)
LCM of a,b,c = 24q(q+1), because q and (q+1) are co-primes for all values of q.
LCM = 288
24q(q+1) = 288
q(q+1) = 12
q=3( which can be obtained by solving the quadratic equation, as the product of two consecutive
numbers is 12, the numbers must be 3 and 4). Hence, the value of ‘b’ and ‘c’ are 24*3 and 24*4. In
either order. Hence, the greatest value of c is 96.

Solution-10:

The year ‘X’ started and ended with the same day of a week, which implies that the year’X’ is a non-leap
year. In a non-leap year the months February, March and November starts with the same day of a week.
Among these four Srinath is elder to Sachin and Sachin is elder to Sourav and Sourav is elder to Sehwag.
Srinath > Sachin > Sourav > Sehwag.
As all the four friends celebrated their birthdays on the same day of a week and Sachin celebrated his
birthday on 10th means the others should celebrate on 3rd, 17th and 24th. Hence, Srinath celebrated on
3 rd February, Sachin on 10 th March, Sourav on 17 th November and Sehwag on 24 th November in the year
X. It is also given that in the year of X, 1st of January Y is on Tuesday. Then the 3rd of February will be
five days after Tuesday i.e. Sunday. Hence, all four friends celebrated their birthdays on Sunday.

11. All the four friends celebrated their birthdays on Sunday. Option (A)
12. Srinath celebrated his birthday on 3rd February. Option (C)
13. Sourav celebrated his birthday on 17th November. Option (C)
14. Sehwag celebrated his birthday on 24th November. Option (D)
