Bio-Bricks

Load-bearing test

100mm X 100mm X 100mm size Bio-bricks were selected for the load-bearing test using a compression
testing machine. Figure 8 highlights the load-bearing test, and the result confirmed that these Bio-Bricks
have very low load-bearing capacities and are not suitable for load-bearing constructions. But can be
used as filler walls in frame structure and as a partition wall.

Thermal insulation test

For this test 150mm X 150mm X 50mm Bio-Brick was used. The idea of the test was to verify if these Bio-
Bricks were able to act as thermal insulators and help in reducing thermal gain in buildings. This test was
performed using a blow torch and heating one side of the brick with flame as high as 550 ℃ to 600 ℃
for about three minutes. And the temperature was measured on the other side of the block using an
optical thermometer (Figure 9). The result shows that Bio-Bricks have excellent thermal insulation
properties and can be used as insulation boards or panels.

Water absorption test

The major component of Bio-Bricks being agro-waste, we wanted to check the effect of water
absorption and stability of the block once soaked in water. For this experiment, we used a 150mm X
150mm X 50mm block which was left in a water container for around 24 hours. The Bio-Bricks were
checked for deformation and cracks due to water absorption, and it was found to be stable after the
period. For water absorption percentage, the dry weight and the weight after 24-hour soaking was taken
- the difference of weight divided by the original weight multiplied by100 gave the percentage

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Mix Proportions:
Cement used was ASTM C150 (2011) type I ordinary Portland cement of 53 grade. Natural siliceous river
sand, which was locally available for construction activities. Coarse aggregate used was crushed granite
stone with the size ranging between 12.5mm and 20mm. Water used for mixing and curing of concrete
was ordinary potable water and mixture which is light brown in colour with the pH of six[14].
Compressive Strength Studies: The compressive strength of normal, mixture of fly ash and
polypropylene containing soil on dry, casted and was tested using compression testing machine shown
in figure 3. Table 3 summaries the strength characteristics of the Polypropylene fiber, fly ash and soil.
Polypropylene fiber soil block without addition of fibers has the lowest compressive strength of 13.45
MPa as compared with those with fiber addition. According to Indian Standard specifications (IS: 516–
1959), the compression test on cubes was conducted. To evaluate the mechanical strength
characteristics of concrete reinforced with polypropylene fiber, detailed experimental investigation was
carried out and the results are discussed. Totally 10 cube specimens of size 150× 150× 150 mm with 3
mixes were casted and tested. Three volume fractions were considered for of two different lengths.
Results for compressive strength based on the average values of three test data. In the case of fiber
enhanced soil block, the compressive strength increased with increase in weight fraction of fiber
content, for both types of fiber

MIX DESIGN

Mix design was done based on IS 10262 – 1982 & IS 456 –

2000 for M40 grade of concrete.

Following shows the mix proportion of concrete per m3

Cement Content : 430.00 Kg

Fine Aggregate : 717.50 Kg

Coarse Aggregate : 1233.66 Kg

Admixtures (BSF) : 5.16 Kg

EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE

The specimen of standard cube of 150mm*150mm*150mm

And standard cylinder of 300mm*150mm and prism of size 100mm*100mm*500mm were used to
determine the Compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural ,Strength of concrete.
