PROJECT NAME:
EAST-WEST LATERAL ROAD

REGION:
XIII- CARAGA
START DATE:

MAY 26, 2015

END DATE: ONGOING

BUDGET:
PHP. 4,873,000,000.00

STATUS: PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION

PROJECT REMARKS
This project forms part of the total regional connectivity between the Region
XIII and Region X and promotes biodiversity in the Northern Mindanao Corridor. It
will encourage farmers to till additional farmlands. Consequently, this promotes
development in different fields such as eco-tourism, agriculture, industry and
domestic trade. This project will provide an accessible route for the remote area
settlers, thus uplifting their economic growth. Furthermore, the project reduces
hauling cost and travel time of agri-farm produce products to the nearest market. It
also provides access of public facilities and services as well as promote peace to
conflict affected areas.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The project involves 57-km road opening and upgrading (unpaved to paved)
with pavement width of 6.70 meters and thickness of 0.28 meters and construction
of six (6) concrete bridges (327lm). It also includes provision of drainage and slope
protection structures/facilities with road safety devices.

As a Civil Engineering Student, do you think the project

would last long? If yes, what are the countermeasures done
by the Contractor? If not, what are the faults made by the
Contractor?
The project took years of planning and designing before it was published for
public bidding. After that, there was a careful selection of the contractor to
implement the project. The project was also allotted a huge amount of budget. As a
student, I believe that the project would last long. This conclusion was based from
the articles I have seen about the project since I cannot see the project first hand and
I am also not one of the people directly involved so I cannot give specific points.
Since it is one of the biggest projects here in Mindanao, I believe the contractor
hired thousands of constriction workers for it and assigned subcontractors in some
parts in order to simultaneously have progress in different areas. I also believe that
the contractor had a deal with the indigenous communities and the NPA beforehand
to gain their support so that there will be less difficulties when they work in their
territories. Lastly, I believe that the Contractor used time efficiently with the budget
allotted and was able to produce quality results since the project would not continue
if it was inspected and was found to have substandard quality.
