Piglet Mouse Ears

I hope you have enjoyed these as much as I have! And you are able to get good use
out of them, maybe for a family trip to Disney!

The design for Piglet was so much more difficult for me. Maybe it’s because I am
less familiar with him. Maybe it’s because he is much more simply drawn, or maybe
it’s just because his face was harder to do with puffy paint, and looked odd without
the ears. But no matter, we did it! I could not make the face without the ears, as I
mentioned, and the puffy paint placement is critical for the look, but overall, this is
not a difficult pattern to make! And for fun, I have added an acorn, as it was Piglet’s
snack of choice. But it can easily be left off the headband if a simpler look is
preferred. Let’s get started!

Terms and abbreviations to know:

Magic ring
ch, chs – chain, chains
st, sts – stitch, stitches
rnd, rnds – rnd, rounds
sl st – slip stitch
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
dc – double crochet
inc – increase, 2 sc worked into the same st
dec – decrease, work 2 sts together to make 1 sts
sc2tog – a decrease, specifically with sc
mini puff st – this is a puff st made with the sc, made to be smaller than the
common puff st with dc.

1. Insert hook into next st.

2. Pull up a loop (2 loops on hook).
3. Insert hook into same st.
4. Pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).
5. Insert hook into same st.
6. Pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).
7. Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on hook.

invsc2tog – invisible single crochet 2 together; this is essentially a decrease, but

done in such a way as to make the continuous stitching smoother and the decrease
not as noticeable

1. Insert hook into front loop only of next stitch, DO NOT yarn over.
2. Insert hook into front loop of second stitch.

 3. Yarn over. Pull through 2 loops.
4. Yarn over and pull through last loop.

Notes: I used a LOT of Puffy Paint for this project, but I felt it made things easier.
You can always sew the black stripes on instead, if you’d prefer, but being a novelty
item that won’t be too heavily worn or need washing, the puffy paint was perfect!
Headband, in Pink, Make 2 (in order to get the proper fit over a tapered
headband, you have to make 2 pieces to be sewn together at the top middle)

**Special Note: Because keeping track of sts and rnds at the same time can be a
struggle, I have included the total number of sts for each section where there are no
increases, so all you need to do is count the sts, and not the rnds! Also, before each
inc rnd, be sure to test out the fit on the headband. It will be tight, and it should be,
but if you don’t stretch it out a bit, as you go, it will be very difficult to fit on when
finished. Lastly, trying it on as you go will let you know if you need more or less
rnds toward the end, depending on how tightly you crochet and the yarn you use the
final number of rnds may vary. You should come close to center with each piece, so
there’s room to sew them together.

Begin with magic ring.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnds 2-8: sc in each st around; 6 sts (42 sts)
Rnd 9: inc, sc in next 5 sts; 7 sts
Rnds 10-16: sc in each st around; 7 sts (49 sts)
Rnd 17: inc, sc in next 6 sts; 8 sts
Rnds 18-24: sc in each st around; 8 sts (56 sts)
Rnd 25: inc, sc in next 7 sts; 9 sts
Rnds 26-37: sc in each st around; 9 sts (126 sts) – This final number may vary,
depending on the yarn used, how much it stretches, or your gauge. Just keep trying
the pieces on until they meet about halfway. You don’t want any slack, so they
should be sewn together, taut. Put them on the opposite ends of the headband, pulling
them to meet in the middle. Seamless sew them together (pictures below). But to
seamlessly sew, you will be sewing into each st twice. Line them up so that the final
sts of the rnds align with the first sts on the opposite side. Insert your hook into the
first open st across from where the tail begins. Insert hook into same st on bottom,
new st on top. Then new st on bottom, same st on top; same st on bottom, new st on
top. Do this, always going through the same piece first, so that you’re not going back
and forth, but always start by going through the piece on the side where your tail
began. Knot and weave in ends on the bottom side of the headband.

 1. The two pieces shouldn’t really
touch before sewing, but be close. I
do NOT sl st to join at the end of
each one, purposely, so that they fit
together like a puzzle piece.
2. To sew, always go in through the
same side. If you sew into a new st on
the bottom, go through the same st on
the top. Then go through the same st
on bottom, and new st on top.

 3. Stitching as described above will
help keep the look clean and
seamless!
*Note: Before making the mouse ears, you will be making the Piglet ears, so
that they can be sewn into your light pink mouse ear. Follow the order as
written, and there shouldn’t be any confusion!

Ch 12
Rnd 1: turn and sl st into 3rd ch from hook, sl st into next ch, sc into next ch,
sc2tog, hdc in next 3 chs, dc in next ch, 4 dc in last ch, turn work to crochet on the

other side of the ch, dc in first ch, hdc in next 3 chs, 2 sc, sc in next st, sl st in next
3 chs, sl st to top of the ear
Rnd 2: sl st int next 2 sts, sc2tog, hdc in next 4 sts, 2 dc in each of the next 4 sts,
hdc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 st, sl st in next 4 sts up to the point.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. Set aside for assembly.

First Ear, in Pink, Make 2 to stitch together
Begin with a magic ring.
Rnd 1: 8 hdc in magic ring, join with sl st to first st; 8 sts
Rnd 2: ch 1, 2 hdc in each st around, join with sl st to first st; 16 sts
Rnd 3: ch 1, (2 hdc in next st, hdc in next sts)8x, join with sl st to first st; 24 sts
Rnd 4: ch 1, (2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts)8x, join with sl st to first st; 32 sts
Rnd 5: ch 1, (2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 3 sts)8x, join with sl st to first st; 40 sts
Rnd 6: ch 1, (2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 4 sts)8x, join with sl st to first st; 48 sts
After making the first piece, sew Piglet’s ears to the wrong side of the first panel,
just at the top. After the second panel, do not fasten off, but instead begin to sl st
around your two pieces, to connect them, making a thicker ear. Sl st all the way
around, right through the Piglet ears to secure them. Fasten off and leave a long tail
for sewing.

facing out, wrong sides together, and
sl st all the way around to join to the
back.

Nose, in Pink Grapefruit

Ch 6
Row 1: turn and sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; 5 sts
Row 2: ch 1 and turn, sc in each st across; 5 sts
Row 3: ch 1 and turn, dec, sc in next st, dec; 3 sts
Row 4: ch 1 and turn, dec over all 3 sts; 1 st
Do NOT turn. Sc around the whole nose, two in each of the bottom corners. When
you get to the top, sc in top st, sl st in first st of rnd, and fasten off, leaving a long

tail for sewing. Sew onto the center of the first ear, slightly toward the bottom, top
of nose just below the center of the circle.
*Note: You can use the picture below to paint on the face! I did this, obviously,
before attaching to the headband. I would advice attaching to the headband first, if
you want the product to be assembled sooner. Otherwise, you have to let the paint
dry for about 24 hours before sewing, because it will get smeared!

11. You can paint the face now, or later. If I had it to do over again, I
would probably paint it on AFTER sewing to the headband!

Once sl stitched together, simply use your black puffy paint to paint the stripes
onto the ear!

I have had many people ask me with the other ears, about how I sew them onto the
headband to make them stand up. Hopefully the pictures below can help with this a
bit.

I sew the front AND the back side of the ear down to the headband, spread about a
half inch wide. This flattens the bottom of that circle out a bit, so that it’s no longer
perfectly round, but gives it a sturdier base for your ear.

Acorn, (OPTIONAL) beginning with Honey (any light brown and dark brown
for the bottom and top will do)
Rnd 1: 6 sc in magic ring; 6 sts
Rnd 2: (inc, sc in next st)3x; 9 sts
Rnd 3: sc in each st around; 9 sts
Rnd 4: (inc, sc in next 2 sts)3x; 12 sts
Rnd 5: sc in each st around; 12 sts
Attach darker brown, and fasten off Honey.
Rnd 6: in darker brown, 12 mini puff sts; 12 sts
Rnd 7: 6 invsc2tog; 6 sts
Rnds 8-9: sc in each st around; 6 sts
Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing. Sew your acorn, as pictured, to the dark
pink ear AND down to the headband, on the inside of that ear.
