SIMPLE STRAIN [Deadline: February 25, 2022]

Problem Solving: Apply a systematic way of solving the problem by providing the given, required, solution, and
final answer/justifications. Box out your final answers based on what’s required. Write down your calculations on a
piece of paper, take photos of it, and then upload it to our Teams Files tab > Class Activities > Assignment >
Problem Solving > 1-simple-strain folder.
The file to be uploaded must be in pdf, and the format for your file names should be [LAST NAME, FIRST NAME]-1-
simple-strain.
Example: PENTADO, EDRIAN-1-simple-strain

1. Steel railroad rails 10 m long are laid with clearance of 3 mm at a temperature of 15°C. At what
temperature will the rails just touch each other? Assume α = 11.7 x 10^-6 /°C and E = 200 GPa.

2. Calculate the change in diameter of a circular steel rod axially loaded in compression where
diameter is 5cm and axial strain of –0.0025 with poisson's ratio of 0.28.

3. In the LRT II project steel railroad rails of 10 meters long are to be installed. If the lowest
temperature considered is 20 °C and a maximum temperature of 36°C is designed for, and the
modulus of elasticity of steel to be 207 GPa, determine the clearance between the rails such that
adjoining will just touch at maximum design temperature. Assume α for steel is 11.6 x 10^-6 /°C

4. A railroad track is laid at a temperature of 10 °F with gaps of 0.01 feet between the ends of the
rails. The rails are 33 feet long. If they are prevented from buckling, what stress will result from a
temperature of 100 °F? Coefficient of linear expansion is 6.5 x 10^-6 /°F.

5. Two masses if 100 kg are suspended by wires that are five mm in diameter. One wire is of
aluminum and the other is of steel. The wires are 10 meters long. By how much lower will the mass
held by the aluminum wire be?

6. A load of 22 kips is gradually applied to a 2-in round rod, 10 ft long. The total elongation is
observed to be 0.03 in. If the stretching is entirely elastic,
a) what is the modulus of elasticity, and
b) what material would you judge it to be, wrought iron or stainless steel [from information
available in the tables (Table AT 4 and AT 7 from Faires)]?
c) how much energy is absorbed by the rod?
d) Suppose that the material is aluminum alloy 3003-H14 (Table AT 3, Faires); compute its
elongation for the same load. Is this within elastic action?
