Course Title: Heat Transfer Semester: IV
Course Code: MET 221
Unit/ Title: Extended surfaces

1. A 4mm diameter and 10 cm long aluminum fin (k=237 W/m-K) is attached to a surface. If the
heat transfer coefficient is 12 W/m2-K, determine percent error in the rate of heat transfer if
the designer assumes the fin to be infinitely long which has finite length in reality. Heat
transfer from the tip of actual fin may be neglected if its tip area is less than 2% of total area.

2. A 10 cm long and 1 cm diameter steel pin fin (k=16 W/m-K) is proposed to be attached to a
wall which is exposed to a heat transfer coefficient of 4800 W/m2-K. Comment whether the
installation of the fin for a commercial application is recommended or not. Assume the fin tip
to be insulated.

3. A hot surface, at 120 oC, carries two pin-fins ‘M’ and ‘N’ of same length and diameter but
different materials. Both fins are exposed to air at 25 oC. The tip temperatures of the two fins
are 50 oC and 75 oC respectively. If the thermal conductivity of fin ‘M’ is 20 W/m-K, determine
the thermal conductivity of fin ‘N’. Effect of heat loss from the fin tip may disregarded.

4. An alloy steel rod, 0.5cm in diameter and 6 cm long, is attached to a hot wall maintained at 80
o
C. The rod is exposed to a convective environment at 25 oC. If the heat transfer coefficient is
25 W/m2-K and thermal conductivity of the alloy steel is 18 W/m-K, determine (1) Fin
efficiency (2) Tip temperature (3) Heat dissipation rate. Disregard heat transfer from the tip
only if tip area is less than 1% of the total fin area.
