1. A soup bowl with a stainless steel spoon (k=15.1 W/m-K) is kept in a room where
ambient air is at 25 oC. As shown, the spoon is partially immersed in hot soup which is at
95 oC. The handle of the spoon has a cross section of 0.2 cm x 1.3 cm, and extends 18 cm
in the air from the free surface of the soup. If heat transfer coefficient on the exposed
surface of spoon handle is 17 W/m2-K, determine temperature at the tip as well as
middle of exposed length when (a) Heat loss from the tip is disregarded (b) Heat loss
from the tip is accounted. Repeat the solution for a silver spoon with ‘k’ equal to 429
W/m-K. Which material makes the spoon safe for human hands? Also find the heat
transfer rate corresponding to the two materials when (a) Heat loss from the tip is
disregarded (b) Heat loss from the tip is accounted.
