Heat Transfer (EME 314) Chapter 2: Extra problems
Supervisor : Dr. Asmaa Attya

1. A furnace wall is built in a room at a temperature of 20°C. The furnace wall

consists of two layers of fire brake, each of width 180 mm and having a
thermal conductivity of 0.9 W/m.°K, separated by air gap . The outer layer is
covered with a 25 mm layer of plaster whose thermal conductivity is 0.12
W/m.°K. The inner surface wall temperature is 1200°C and the heat transfer
coefficient from the outside wall surface to the room is 20 W/m2.°K and the
resistance of the air gap is 0.2 k/w. Calculate the interface temperatures.

2. Consider the composite wall shown

in Fig. The concrete and brick
sections are of equal thickness.
Determine T1, T2, q and the
percentage of that flows through the
brick. To do this, approximate the
heat flow as one-dimensional. Draw
the thermal circuit for the wall and
identify all four resistances before
you begin. Neglect heat flow through
the interface between the brick and
the concrete.

3. A type 316 stainless steel pipe has a 6 cm inside diameter and an 8 cm

outside diameter with a 2 mm layer of 85% magnesia insulation around it.
Liquid at 112°C flows inside with hi=346 W/m2.°K. The air around the pipe is
at 20°C, and ho=6 W/m2.°K. Calculate U based on the inside area. Sketch the
equivalent thermal circuit, showing all known temperatures.
