College of Engineering & Tech. Mechanical Engineering Department

I st year/Sem. MSc( Thermal Steam ) – Final Exam (2018-19) Time: 2hr

Subject: Advanced Heat and Mass Transfer (ThE-6103) Max.Marks: 40

1. Derive the thermal resistance network for heat transfer through a three-layered
composite cylinder subjected to convection on both sides. (10mark)

2. Two large parallel planes with emissivities of Є1 and Є2 are maintained at

temperatures of T1O C and T2O C respectively. A radiation shield having emissivities
of Є on both sides is placed between them. Calculate (i) Heat transfer rate
between them without shield. (ii) Heat transfer rate between them with shield.
(5+5mark)

3. Draw the boiling curve and identify the different boiling regimes. Also, explain
the characteristics of each regime (5+5mark)

4. Consider a 5-m-high, 8-m-long, and 0.22-m-thick wall whose representative

cross section is as given in the figure. The thermal conductivities of various
materials used, in W/m · °C, are kA= kF= 2, kB= 8, kC =20, kD= 15, and kE= 35. The lef
and right surfaces of the wall are maintained at uniform temperatures of 300°C
and 100°C, respectively. Assuming heat transfer through the wall to be one-
dimensional, determine (a) the rate of heat transfer through the wall; (b) the
temperature at the point where the sections B, D, and E meet; and (c) the
temperature drop across the section F. Disregard any contact resistances at the

interfaces.
