“Present Conceptualization of Early Childhood Neurodevelopmental Disabilities”

This article is a journal of child neurology written by Michael I. Shevell and originally

published online on Sep 8, 2009. Shevell convincingly describes and identifies infant and toddler

developmental impairments as a set of chronic diverse diseases with a known abnormality, either

qualitative data collection in origin, in the acquisition and expression of early developmental

skills as an essential core component. Cerebral palsy, cognitive language delays, and

psychological disorders are the main impairments described and covered in this article. Cerebral

palsy is a persistent but not unchangeable mobility and posture issue that appears in the early

stages of life and is caused by a non-progressive neurological condition caused by interference

during its development (Shevell, 2010). Significantly, a common understanding of

neurodevelopmental disorders has resulted in entities that could exist side by side in the same

person.

After reading this article, I find multiple ideas and concerns that were discussed in this

course. For example, recognizing a child's developmental disorder accurately is a must before

providing proper care. Furthermore, a significant topic that was highlighted throughout the

course is that the lack of objective tools of diagnosis suggests that our understandings will stay in

a needed and inescapable state of flux for the coming years. This project has broadened my

understanding of early childhood developmental disabilities and shifted my viewpoint on how I

perceived them. Finally, I would suggest this article to my colleagues for professional research

purposes on the issue, as well as to healthcare professionals who want to learn more about how

early childhood developmental problems are now conceptualized.

Discussion question: What are the advantages of early intervention for students with
disabilities?
