LESSON
Work Ethics

Work ethics is a critical issue in today’s workplace. If the employers and employees do not consistently follow high
standards of conduct, companies cannot prosper.

Work ethics is defined as a group of moral principles, standards of behavior, or set of values regarding proper
conduct in the workplace (Webster Dictionary). Ethics is concerned with how a moral person should behave. Values are
the inner judgments that determine how a person actually behaves. Most values have nothing to do with ethics.
Consistency with what we say we value (ethics) and what are actions say we value (values) is a matter of integrity.

The following characteristics are some of the most common work ethics an employee should remember:
1. Attendance. Be on time or 10-15 minutes before the time. Do not abuse leave time and avoid absences without
valid and important reasons.
2. Honesty. An honest employee fosters good reputation to an organization. So be honest by telling the truth at all
times and never attempt stealing or theft.
3. Punctuality. You need to submit your work early or on time. Always come to your work 15 minutes before your
official time.
4. Loyalty. Never disclose, reveal, or share confidential matters. You must be trustworthy so that people will rely
and trust you.
5. Teamwork. Be a good team player with your colleagues in a workplace. Always help one another to achieve
more.
6. Productivity. You have to accomplish more within the stipulated or specified time. Never use your time for doing
things like chatting, gossiping, texting, etc.
7. Reliability. It is a quality of being able to be trusted because of working or behaving well. Your employer trusts
you that you can do your own work without much supervision. You can also be asked for help at times your
employer and your co-worker.
8. Commitment to Excellence. You do not only work for compliance but you work hard to produce the best output
or best quality.
9. Professionalism. It is more than just how you look but it is a way of speaking, behaving and even thinking that
helps a person to be successful in the workplace. You must know how to follow all workplace rules, admit if you
made a mistake and learn from it, and ask for help if you are not sure how to handle a situation. Use of proper
language is also an important aspect of communication whether you are talking with a co-worker in the privacy of
your own office or to a customer.
Practice using language that is appropriate for the workplace in your everyday conversations so that you get into
the habit of sounding professional. Lastly, always dress up appropriately. https://www.conovercompany.com/5-

10. Attitude. Many always look for an employee with the right attitude. To be a better employee, you must listen to
suggestions, be positive on different challenges you may encounter, accept responsibility entrusted to you and
respect everyone in the workplace.

SELF-RESTRAINT AND WORK ETHICS

1. Not doing what you have the power to do. An action is not proper just because it is allowed or you can get away
with it.
2. Not doing what you have the right to do. There is a world of difference between what you have the right to do
and what the right thing to do is.
3. Not doing what you want to do. An ethical person sometimes decides to do more than is required and less than is
allowed.
