We use them whenever there is an illogical contrast between the first sentence and the
second one as its consequence

He wasn’t a strong man though he had gym classes every day


Although he has decided to live away from his house, he is still living with his parents
They show up at every party even though they are never invited to them
She was known and loved by everybody in town though she wasn’t a celebrity

2) Despite, in spite of

We use them when we want to talk about the cause of a possible consequence that
doesn’t happen; in fact we have an illogical contrast as a consequence

Despite the rain everybody wanted to go to the park


He would fight for his rights in spite of the consequences
Despite his low height John succeeded as a basketball player
In spite of the difficulties the employees succeeded in their audit

3) Nevertheless

We have a very surprising connection between the sentences

They didn’t have any money nevertheless they spent their last vacation in London
He said he was going to be very busy nevertheless he came for the show
She said she wasn’t tired nevertheless she slept almost two days in a row
