ARCHITECTURE & ECOTOURISM

INTRODUCTION
It is known that tourism has become one of the world’s most
important economy. Ecotourism, as defined by IUCN – The
International Union for the Conservation of Nature, is
“environmentally responsible travel and visitation to relatively
undisturbed natural areas, in order to enjoy, study and appreciate
nature (and any accompanying cultural features – both past and
present), that promotes conservation, has low negative visitor impact,
and provides for beneficially active socio-economic involvement of
local populations”. Ecotourism projects the concept of sustainability
in tourism.

AIM
To understand the various aspects of ecology in relation to the context
and the people to promote sustainable tourism.

OBJECTIVES
• To understand the ecosystem, cultural heritage and essence of
the context.
• To study about ecology and its relation in tourism.
• To understand the various measures of ecotourism and
sustainability.
• To study about the planning and designing strategies on
tourism that could be implemented suitable to the ecosystem, the
community and it’s surroundings.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
• What is ecotourism and why do we need ecotourism?
• What is the role of architecture in ecotourism?
• What are the various eco design strategies that could be
implemented in a given context which is suitable to the
ecosystem and its surroundings?

SCOPE
• The scope of the study is to understand the relation of
ecotourism and architecture so as to design ecotourist hubs
where the natural ecosystems and the cultural heritage of the
context is preserved.
• Helps in the better understanding of ecotourism which enables
better architectural planning and designing of tourist
infrastructures.
• Helps in the understanding of spatial aspects of the context in
relation to its ecology and converting them into tourist’s hubs.

LIMITATIONS
• Most of the ecotourist destinations in our country has not done
justice to the concept of ecotourism completely. The main focus
is on hospitality rather than a sustainable approach to the
ecotourism. The complete site context and its surroundings
should be considered while planning and designing ecotourist
hubs which is often not seen in most of the cases.
