a. John Locke- the empiricist
Because he believed that knowledge was founded in empirical observation and experience.
b. Spencer- the utilitarianist
Spencer's indirect utilitarianism sought to promote the conditions upon which happiness is
founded through the principle of equal freedom.
c. John Dewey- experience
The connection between a student’s learning experiences and that student's future
decisions and behavior
d. George Counts- Building a new social order
An examination of teachers, the Progressive Education Movement, democracy and his idea
on how to reform the American economy.
e. Theodore Brameld- the Social Reconstructionist
As a response to the horrors of WWII. He believed that education had the responsibility to
mold human beings into a cohesive and compassionate society
