I. Past simple
o Usage:

o Form - Simple Past

 Form Example Note
(+) S + V2 + O My mother called me
(S + was/were + …) yesterday.
Tom was sick last week.

(-) S + did + not + V1 + O My mother did not call me was not = wasn’t
(S + was/were + not +…) yesterday. were not = weren’t
Tom wasn’t sick last week.

(?) Did + S + V1 + O +…? Did my mother call me

(Was/were + S + …) yesterday?
Was Tom sick last week?

Wh- + did + S + V1 + O +…? Who did my mother call?

(Wh- + was/were + S + …) Who was your teacher last
year?

Used to/would (past habit)

She has been to Paris and London.

(-) S + has/have + not + V3/ed + O. I haven’t eaten breakfast. have not = haven’t
She hasn’t been to Paris and London. has not = hasn’t

(?) Has/have + S + V3/ed + O ? Have you done your homework yet?

Has the postman delivered the letter
yet?
Has she ever been to Paris and
London?

Wh- + has/have + S + V3/ed + O? What have you done?

Where has she been?

o Usage:
 o Form – Past Perfect

Form Example Note

(+) S + had + V3/ed + O. Dinosaurs had lived on Earth long before
humans appeared.
When you came yesterday, I had already done
my homework.

(-) S + had + not + V3/ed + O. Dinosaurs hadn’t lived on Earth long before had not = hadn’t
humans appeared.
When you came yesterday, I hadn’t done my
homework.

(?) Had+ S + V3/ed + O ? Had dinosaurs lived on Earth long before

humans appeared?
Had you done your homework when I came
yesterday?
