INTRODUCTION

The Central Bicol State University of Agriculture (CBSUA) continues to perform

its mandate to educate and mold young Bikolanon to become skilled agriculturists,
entrepreneurs, agricultural engineers, veterinarians, teachers, extension agents, and
other professionals to help improve and transform the agricultural economy of the
region. Currently, it envisions being an agricultural research university of global
standard. In the realization of this vision, the university has to upscale all its research
related programs and engagement to be at par with other renowned research
universities in the world.

By virtue of Republic Act 10931 or Universal Access to Quality Tertiary

Education Act, CBSUA provides educational access and offers free tuition. The
budget invested by the government for a free tuition fee is given with the hope that the
students are provided with quality education. With the sudden shift to emergency
distance learning, the university stakeholders expect continued quality service to
ensure graduates are functional, employable, and globally competitive in the new
normal. The current status of CBSUA being ISO 9001:2015 Certified and the AACCUP
accreditation of academic programs are tangible proofs that the university is ensuring
compliance with international standards.

CBSUA, in its quest for quality and eventually excellent service, continuously
works on different initiatives to improve its processes. Among these initiatives is the
crafting of the Guidelines for Thesis and Dissertation Writing. The proposed
guidelines capture some provisions in the CMO 15, Series of 2019 for graduate
school programs. Further, In compliance with the One System Policy of the
university, this proposal for a unified CBSUA Guidelines for Publishable Student’s
Research Manuscript is hereby presented.

Thesis/Dissertation classification

P P
This thesis or dissertation is available to the general public.

The objective of the classification of theses and dissertations is to identify which

among these theses and dissertations involves intellectual property. The necessary
filing, registration or deposit for protection of an intellectual property requires time from
the disclosure and prior art search to drafting. An embargo period where a thesis or
dissertation is restricted from the general public is adopted for theses and dissertations
containing intellectual property. To further facilitate the embargo period of theses and
dissertations involving intellectual property, the succeeding guidelines are adopted.
1. Theses and dissertations classified as P shall be made accessible to the
general public upon their availability in the respective libraries of the university.
2. Theses and dissertations classified as I, A or C shall be automatically restricted
from the general public for a minimum of one (1) year up to a maximum of two
(2) years or as indicated in the embargo form accomplished by a student after
completion of the thesis or dissertation. The embargo shall be implemented by
the respective libraries of the University housing copies of these theses and
dissertations.
3. Before the lapse of the initial embargo period, the author or adviser may request
for the extension of the public access restriction for the remaining period of the
two-year maximum period subject to approval of the justification for the
extension.
4. Upon lapse of the embargo period, without any intent from either the author or
adviser for extension of the initial embargo period, the theses or dissertation
shall then be made available to the public indefinitely. Theses and dissertations
enjoying the maximum two-year embargo period shall be made accessible to
the general public by the respective libraries of the University after the embargo
period has lapsed.
5. The Colleges shall submit at the end of every semester a compilation of
abstracts of theses and dissertations classified as I to the IPMO. The respective
libraries of the Campuses shall submit the same to the IPMO at the end of every
academic year.

VPA-GL-001 Rev.: 0
Effectivity Date: February 1, 2022 Page 7 of 54
6. Theses and dissertations classified as C will only be made available to the
public in its redacted form as approved by the third party involved. The author
or adviser is responsible for requesting in writing from the third party the
approval to redact the parts containing confidential information from the thesis
or dissertation manuscript.
7. Restricted theses and dissertations may still be accessed during the embargo
period by selected individuals subject to the following conditions:
a. If a requesting party is a student, staff, researcher or faculty of the
University, submission to the respective library of a written request letter
duly approved by the author or adviser allowing use of the thesis or
dissertation is required. Should both the author or adviser be
unavailable, approval of the request letter shall be made by the IPMO.
b. Other requesting parties besides those identified in 6a are required to
submit the following documents to the respective library:
i. a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA; IPMO Form IPM-FR-003)
duly signed and notarized by the requesting party such that a
witness to the NDA is from the IPMO; and
ii. a written request letter as approved by the author or adviser
allowing use of the thesis or dissertation. Should both the author
or adviser be unavailable, approval of the request letter shall be
made by the IPMO.
8. Documents relating to requests for access of restricted theses and dissertations
shall be transmitted by the respective libraries of the University to the IPMO at
the end of every semester.
With the interest of securing ample time allowance to protect intellectual
property generated through research theses and dissertations, students and advisers
should also carefully take note that restricting access to a thesis or dissertation impairs
the standard process of making these works known to the public including potential
employers.

B. Main Parts of Thesis or Dissertation Manuscript
CHAPTER I. Introduction
CHAPTER I consists of an Introduction, a Statement of the Problem, an
Objective of the Study, a Significance of the Study, a Scope and Limitations of the
Study, a Theoretical Framework, a Conceptual Framework, and a Definition of Terms.
1. Introduction. The Introduction is a mental road map or the bird’s eye view of
the research that establishes the background (especially when the statistics are
needed), topic, scope, context, significance, and potential research outcomes.
In writing the introduction, highlight the importance of researching the chosen
topic by justifying why to conduct the research and cite the university's agenda,
relevant government agencies’ agenda, and the Sustainable Development
Goals (SDG) addressed by the research. The last part of the introduction should
answer why the topic is essential to investigate and how the research will
advance new knowledge or new ways of understanding. (See Appendix 7

2. Statement of the Problem. The Statement of the Problem shows that

something is wrong, needs an explanation, and needs attention. It is stated in
question form, expressing what the research is about, what readers expect to
learn, what needs to be solved, proved, or verified at the end of the research.
(See Appendix 8)

3. Objective of the Study. The Objective of the Study is the actions to be

accomplished to solve the research problem. Objectives are stated in terms of
observable verbs (e.g. determine, identify, evaluate, analyze), which follow the
SMART Principle: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-bounded.
(See Appendix 9)

4. Significance of the Study. The Significance of the Study enumerates who

should benefit from the research or what potential benefits or applications the
research findings contribute to an individual or a certain sector/s of the
community. Order the beneficiaries according to their commonality and level of
importance. (See Appendix 10)

5. Scope and Limitations of the Study. The Scope and Limitations of the
Study explains the focus or coverage of the study. It tells the reader the extent
or boundary of the research. It enumerates the variables included in research
and those that are not. (See Appendix 11)

6. Theoretical Framework. The Theoretical Framework is a brief discussion of

the theory/theories (at most three) used in the research. Highlight how the
theory/theories connect/ guide/ support the research.

7. Conceptual Framework. The Conceptual Framework is the visual

representation of the concept and flow of the research.

8. Definition of Terms. The Definition of Terms enumerates the essential terms

used operationally in the research. They are presented alphabetically.

CHAPTER II. Methodology

CHAPTER II presents the overall research design used in the study's conduct
towards realizing its objectives. It includes the Research Design, Research Method,
Population and Sampling Design, Data Gathering Procedure, and the Statistical
Treatment of Data employed in data analysis to interpret the pertinent information
gathered.

1. Research Design. For Research Design, write in a sentence a general strategy

utilized by the researchers. Mention whether the research will use quantitative,
qualitative, quasi quantitative-qualitative, experiential. (See Appendix 14)
2. Research Method. For Research Method, In a simple sentence, write the
research method utilized in the collection of data or evidence for analysis to
uncover new information or create a better understanding of a topic. Different
colleges of the university may have different parts of the research method. (See
Appendix 15)

For ethical considerations, researches involving human subjects or participants

require review and approval by the Research Ethics Board. Similarly,
researches that involve animals arequire review and approval by the
Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).

Write the chosen respondents, sampling size, and the specific sampling
technique used in the Population and Sampling Design. To determine the
number of samples, consult a statistician (See Appendix 16)

3. Data Gathering Procedure. The Data Gathering Procedure describes the step-
by-step process used to obtain the information in research to substantiate the
claims made by a researcher. The process shall include the description of the
instrument used in the research. (See Appendix 17)

4. Statistical Treatment of Data. Statistical Treatment of Data discusses the

statistical tools employed in attaining the objectives of the research. (See
Appendix 18)

VPA-GL-001 Rev.: 0
Effectivity Date: February 1, 2022 Page 12 of 54
CHAPTER III . Results and Discussion

CHAPTER III presents the results and discussion of the research.

Write in the Results and Discussion the meat of research specifying the results,
analysis, interpretation of the data, following the order of the objective of the
study. Support the results and discussion with related literature published within
five (5) years. Linking related literature to the discussion is done to develop
students how to make inferences from the gathered data.

To situate this essential part of the data analysis, it is suggested that there
should be: (1) statement of the research statistical problem, and (2) statement
of the null hypothesis/-es which was /were subjected to testing.

Based on the statistical test results, the decision on the hypothesis

(rejection/non-rejection) must be explained. It is here where the researcher is
cautioned to exercise prudence in making pronouncements. Precision of
language used is needed, e.g. what does it mean to “reject the null hypothesis”
or “not to reject hypothesis”? What does a significant correlation mean? The
use of mathematical phrases, e.g. t> 0.05, p < 0.05 are encouraged.

In the interpretation of data, the researcher must give meaning to the findings.
This can be achieved in three levels: (1) describing trends and patterns, (2)
making inferences and establishing linkages based on the synthesis of the
state-of-the-art, and (3) integrating and generalizing.

Level 1 answers the question, “What do the data mean in the context of the
study”?

Level 2 should explain how the findings are evaluated in terms of current
theory/practice. Is there agreement between related studies? If not, what are
the possible explanations? The findings are also evaluated in light of previous
research. In what ways do they corroborate or fail to corroborate? How are the
differences accounted for? To do this, the researcher needs to address
himself/herself with the following questions:

1. What might have been happening within the methodology to

account for the incongruence in the findings?
2. Why did the results not turn out as hypothesized or expected?
3. What circumstances accounted for the unexpected outcomes?
4. What were the shortcomings of the study? and
5. What are some of the limitations of the study?

Level 3 implies that the researcher should unravel findings and inconsistencies
in the interpretation and attempt to put the pieces together to achieve
meaningful conclusions and generalizations. That is, it should bring out the
expected and unexpected, the major and ancillary together to extract meanings
and principles.

VPA-GL-001 Rev.: 0
Effectivity Date: February 1, 2022 Page 13 of 54
The generalizability of the results to the population of the study can be achieved
if the research can certify that the conditions of the study are conducive to
generalization. These conditions are:

1. The study was conducted under conditions of relative precision

and control; and
2. The subject of the study is genuinely representative of the larger
population of interest.

This means that the researcher must attempt at postdoc analysis of data.

When the finding seems to be related, it is possible to integrate them into some
superordinate point or principle and integrate them into an original theory. The
research goal is to make the findings part of a comprehensive body of theory,
either by working within an existing theory or by generating an original one.

The following is a sequential presentation of the Results and Discussion:

A. Topic Headings

The discussion of results shall be guided by the statement of the problem or

objectives. The number of main topic headings should be parallel to the number
of problems or objectives.

B. Presentation of Findings

Findings may be presented in textual, tabular, graphical/pictorial form, or a

combination of these three depending on the appropriateness of such.

In answering every problem statement/objective of the study, the following parts

and guidelines should be observed:
a. Prefatory Information
Make a paragraph introduction of the problem.

b. Introduce table/figure/chart
Make a one-sentence introduction describing the content of the
table/graph/plate presented

c. Where possible, the table/figure/chart must be displayed on the same

page after the introduction. If it cannot be displayed on a single page due
to its size, it can be transferred to the immediate page following the
presentation but a signal phrase must be included referring to it (e.g.
Table 5 on page 87.)

d. A textual discussion of the data follows the table/figure/chart/graph/plate.

If the table/figure/chart/graph/plate is transferred to the following page,
the textual discussion should be advanced to avoid creating a white
space/gap within a chapter. (See Appendix 19)

VPA-GL-001 Rev.: 0
Effectivity Date: February 1, 2022 Page 14 of 54
CHAPTER IV. Summary, Findings, Conclusions, and Recommendations

CHAPTER IV includes a Summary of the discussion and a synthesized

Findings, Conclusions, and Recommendation
1. The Summary should briefly discuss the research, including the research
objectives, the respondents, the sample size used, and the methods. Present
the summary in paragraph form.
2. The Findings, Conclusions, and Recommendations is a synthesized
discussion covering the findings, conclusions, and recommendations in
paragraph form following the order of the research objectives.
The Findings should not include the full-blown discussion of the findings, which
should be done in Chapter III (Results and Discussion).
State the Conclusions based on the findings of the research. The conclusions
should answer the specific and general objectives of the research. They state
the generalization of the research.
Recommendations discuss the recommendation based on the conclusion,
findings, and methods used in the research. The recommendations include the
actions to be taken as a result of the research, introduction of principles or
methods, crafting of policies, prescribing a design, and suggesting further
research to gather more insights on the principle under study.
3. Write the literature cited in the research in a Bibliography. Use APA format
to organize it.

MS and PhD - Adviser to Student Ratio

(CMO 15, Series of 2019 Article 6, Section 15 #6)

Academic advising is a fundamental dimension of any

graduate degree program, students must be assigned an adviser
at the time of admission and must be provided with the regular
opportunity to communicate with their advisers to discuss not
only choice of course enrollment and satisfaction of degree
requirements, but other intellectual and professional concerns as
well.
Therefore, at all times, the adviser to student ratio is one (1)
full-time faculty per maximum of five (5) students, inclusive of
both in and off-campus students.
In the case of thesis/dissertation adviser to student ratio,
it shall not be more than 1:5 as well, inclusive of both in
and off-campus students.

5. Final Defense Process

a. Timing

i. The Final Defense schedule shall be secured once the TAC/GAC members are
nominated and when the thesis is submitted for examination. The schedule is set
two (2) weeks after the submission of the thesis manuscript. The oral thesis
defense shall take place during the available time of TAC/GAC members, and it will
be made sure that the actual defense will be held during reasonable hours for
everyone involved.

ii. The final thesis defense must not be held until the chair has received the TAC/GAC
members’ report.

iii. When the examiners’ reports indicate that the thesis/ dissertation is considered
substandard, or when there is significant variance in the examiners’
recommendations about the standard of the work, the thesis defense may not take
place as scheduled. Nevertheless, the student retains the right to have a defense.
If a referee is required, the appointment will follow the process of appointing panel
members.

b. Participants

i. The final thesis defense is attended by the student, the research adviser, the two
(2) TAC members and the chair.

ii. Criteria for Selecting the Research Adviser

The selection of the Research Adviser should be on the basis of the field of
specialization related to the chosen research problem of the student.

iii. Criteria for Selecting the members of the TAC

The selection of Thesis Advisory Committee (TAC) should be on the basis of the
field of specialization related to the chosen research problem of the student. A TAC
member can be from other colleges or an external member as deemed necessary
and approved by the dean and the TAC committee. The external member shall
follow the guidelines for writing a thesis manuscript set by the university.

iv. In the event that the adviser/chair/ member of the TAC/GAC leaves for abroad,
retires or resigns from the service and other unforeseen reasons, any member
of the current TAC/GAC representing the field who possesses the needed
qualification and competence shall be designated by the dean as
adviser/chair/ member of the TAC/GAC with consent of the faculty being
designated. The dean shall likewise designate an additional member of
TAC/GAC to complete the composition of the committee.

For Graduate students must accomplished the form for APPLICATION FOR
CHANGE ADVISERS/MEMBER(S) IN THE GRADUATE ADVISORY
COMMITTEE (OGS=FR-018 )

v. Other people, including technical support and administrative personnel, may be

present at the chair's discretion.

c. Venue

i. The final thesis defense will be held at the CBSUA campus with all the TAC/GAC
members, and the student attending in person. Where this arrangement proves
impossible, the dean of the respective college may allow the oral defense to be
conducted online.

ii. Everyone involved in the final thesis defense shall be informed of the video
conferencing details one week before the event.

iii. Should the final thesis defense be held on-site, physical distancing and minimum

d. Arrangements

i. The chair of the TAC/GAC with the administrative support of the respective
colleges, makes arrangements for the final thesis defense and notifies all parties.

The Graduate School Office will inform the GAC using the form NOTICE TO
PANEL (OGS-FR-021)

ii. When the manuscript is already submitted, and the panel members have already
evaluated the paper, the Chair of the TAC/GAC sends the panel members’ reports
to the student, and the adviser.

iii. The student and the adviser will, however, not receive the recommendation from
the panel members’ report. The Chair has the discretion to contact the TAC/GAC
members before the final thesis defense, especially when issues and
disagreements have been identified during the evaluation report and for the
purpose of agreeing on an agenda for the final thesis defense.

iv. The student and the adviser are not allowed to interact and communicate in any
correspondence with the panel members before the commencement of the final
thesis defense. Any communication shall be through the Chair.

e. Duration and Format

i. The thesis/ dissertation defense is intended to be a stimulating, professional, and

constructive intellectual exchange. A typical final defense session will take up to
three hours which includes:
● a pre-meeting of the Chair and the panel members: 30 minutes before the
oral defense;
● the oral defense: 90-120 minutes or as per TAC/GAC decision
● a private meeting after the oral thesis defense when the chair will seek to
facilitate a consensus decision with panel members;
● feedback to the student on the recommendations the panel members will be
making and the requirements they will be asking the student to consider.

ii. The standard format of the thesis/dissertation defense may include:

● a brief overview of the thesis by the student. A PowerPoint presentation is
required;
● questions from the TAC/GAC members on substantive issues;
● other questions;
● free discussion.

The above typical duration and format may vary from case to case. The Chair will
advise the TAC/GAC of any likely significant variations to the standard format as
soon as practical so that the student is informed in a timely manner.
iii. Final Defense
The conduct of final defense may be face to face or online mode as the case maybe.

Effectivity Date: February 1, 2022 Page 22 of 54
f. Announcement of the Final Defense Result

Once the final thesis/dissertation defense has concluded, the chair and the TAC/GAC
members will deliberate in private; the panel members will decide on their joint
recommendations and suggestions as regards the award of the degree for which the
thesis has been submitted, in accordance with the University’s academic regulations on
research.
Following their deliberations, the chair and TAC/GAC members may verbally
communicate their recommended result and any required corrections or revisions to the
student-researcher. This is not an opportunity for the student to challenge the result. In
the event that an agreement cannot be reached between the members of the TAC/GAC
about a joint recommendation, no immediate feedback will be provided to the student or
adviser.
Before the disband of TAC/GAC, a list of matters to be corrected and amended must be
produced and a recommendation made for a single final result. The report should be
written by the chair or one of the panel members and agreed upon between and among
the panel members. The final report should take account of both the initial examination of
the thesis and the oral defense. In exceptional circumstances, where additional
consultation between panel members is required before the report can be finalized, the
final report may be submitted within 2 working days. A panel member will be nominated
to finalize the report.

If the panel members disagree about the result and a consensus cannot be reached, the
Dean of the respective college should be advised and determine that an adjudicator or
other form of referee is required.

Once TAC/GAC sends the final examination report to the adviser and the student-
researcher, the usual regulations and processes regarding assessment outcomes apply.
In the case of re-submission and re-examination after a final defense has been held, a
further defense is permissible.

SUBMISSION

A final copy of the thesis manuscript shall be signed by the TAC/GAC members, chair,
adviser, and the Dean of the College.

Once approved, an e-copy of the thesis manuscript shall be submitted to the research
instructor; and an e-copy of the abstract to the library. Furthermore, the thesis
manuscript shall be reproduced in 2 hardbound copies and shall be submitted to the
library and the college within 15 days before the scheduled university academic
council meeting without prejudice to extend considerations to student researchers who
failed to submit within the prescribed deadline.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

School provides the basic foundation of knowledge being imparted to a child. It

gives children the chance to acquire knowledge on various fields of education such as
people, literature, history, mathematics, politics, and other subjects. By obtaining
knowledge, a person is in a better position to help others. It has become the first
stepping stone in the life of a child, wherein s/he learns a lot. Developing hobbies,
refining them, learning basic etiquettes, and developing social skills are some of the
many things that a school equips a child with. Moreover, schools conduct different
activities with the main objective of developing a child. These can be attained with the
support from the various stakeholders in education such as the government and non-
government organizations, private individuals, business sectors, government officials,
concerned citizens, and the parents.
Parental involvement is widely considered an important aspect of children’s
educational success. Research in the past several decades has confirmed the role of
parental involvement in promoting academic achievement (Fan & Chen, 2001; Hill &
Tyson, 2009; Ma, Shen, Krenn, Hu, & Yuan, 2016), closing demographic gaps in
achievement (Dearing, Kreider, Simpkins, & Weiss, 2006), and reducing high school
dropout rates (Barnard, 2006). Federal policies such as Every Student Succeeds Act
in the United States mandate parental and family engagement in primary and
secondary schools (Every Student Succeeds Act [ESSA], 2015). To implement these
policies and promote student success, schools are making significant efforts to reach
out to parents and increase meaningful parental involvement and participation.
Likewise, parents are considered one of the major stakeholders in the
educational system. Their presence and support could give ways to a more satisfying
school performance and accomplishment. Children in a school with active participation
of their parents giving necessary attention could motivate them to learn. Parents are
collaborators and contributors such as in decision making about school projects,
programs, problems and corresponding solutions. In the Philippines, Parents-
Teachers Associations (PTAs) are recognized by the Department of Education
(DepEd) as stipulated in the DepEd Order No. 54, s. 2009 or the Revised Guidelines
Governing Parents-Teachers Associations (PTAs) at the school level which states,
“Every elementary and secondary school shall organize Parents-Teachers
Association (PTA) for the purpose of providing a forum for the discussion of issues
and their solutions related to the total school program and to ensure the full
cooperation of parents in the efficient implementation of such a program”.
Parents’ support is especially sought for in challenging times such as in the
wake of COVID-19 Pandemic where countries implemented emergency plans to slow
down and limit the virus’s transmission. Schools and universities were temporarily
closed for face-to-face educational activities. The interruption of school activities may
have affected students, both academically and psychologically. This moment may
have created challenges for parental involvement in their children’s learning and
school life during the lockdown and school closures. Hence, this study was conducted
to determine the parents’ role in their children’s education and learning particularly in
times of pandemic.

Appendix 8: Statement of the Problem

Statement of the Problem

Camarines Sur has water resources that are inhabited by species of snails that
may harbour parasites, specifically trematodes. Since these waters can be accessed
by humans and animals, documenting these snails are necessary. However, the
country particularly our province of Camarines Sur, is lacking data on surveillance
regarding these edible snails. Monitoring of snail distribution that may harbour parasite
cercaria is essential as these concerns both public and animal health. This research
will provide data of what particular edible snail infected with different cercarial
parasites and its distribution, thus, it will aid in developing programs to control and
prevent disease transmission either in humans or in animals.

Appendix 9: Objective of the Study

Objective of the Study

The primary aim of the research is to identify the cercarial species present and
its prevalence in edible freshwater snails in the selected water bodies in Camarines
